Spiral Staircase Part 2

Now it's time to start assembling the staircase. As always in assembling do a dry fit of all pieces before gluing, it helps to give you a better idea what you're doing so no 'OOPS' happens.

To start, get a step, dowel, bead, 5/64" drill bit and glue.

Take the bead and run the drill bit through to clean out any debris, take the dowel and put some glue on it about 1/2" up from the end, slide the bead on until 1/16" of the dowel is sticking out.

Now, look at the picture of the template in part 1, pick up a step and hold it the same way. Take the long part of the dowel and put it in the top right hole, but before getting to the bead put a small dab of glue on the bead and then seat the step to the bead. Make sure the 1/16" of the dowel is still sticking out, you'll need it. It should look like thisblog-728-1158545357_thumb.jpg

Once you get the hang of this do the rest of your stair treads the same way, it will be alot easier in the long run  .

Once all the steps are made and the glue is dry, you can start putting them onto the base.

Get the base and one of the steps, put a dab of glue on the bead on the base then take the step and slide the side with the single hole down the dowel until seated on the bead. It should look like thisblog-728-1158545993_thumb.jpg

Take a bead run the 5/64" drill bit through it, put some glue on the base dowel about 1/2" up from the step and slide the bead down the meet the step, then put another dab of glue on top of the bead.

Get another step and put glue on the 1/16" part of the dowel. Now slide it on the base like the first and the dowel in the step will go in the rear hole on the first step.blog-728-1158546682_thumb.jpg

When you get the third step on you'll notice your dowel on the base is almost gone, take a bead and set it on the dowel that's left and see how far the dowel comes up in the bead, if it's under halfway then glue the bead on, if it's more than half cut the dowel so it's halfway then glue the bead on, and then glue in a new dowel so you can continue the steps.

In part 3 we will be ready to put the finishing touches on the staircase and how to install it in your house.
