I finished scribing the "floorboards" and punching the nailholes and stained them maple. They look nice. While the stain was still tacky I put on a coat of lacquer & when it's all dry I'll "sand" it with a brown paper bag to see how I like it.Next I sat down with the schematic sheet and the roll of masking tape and marked each piece. Tedious? Absolutely, but I found some things to make notes about and to familiarize myself with the parts & where they are.First, I noticed that the roo

Day 13 09-08-05

I didn't get much done today. The RW house seemed to want some of my attention ... don't know why it can't clean itself!Anyway, I've finished priming the second floor rooms to be wallpapered:And I've begun priming the attic rooms to be wallpapered:And something tells me, as I'm attempting to prime that attic area (and yes, the house is upside down so you might want to tilt your head) for wallpapering or whatever I'm going to do with it--still haven't quite decided--that I might should have done

Day 12 09-07-2005

Uh oh. Jimmy done gone and messed me up! I asked him to install some of the roof sections, so that I could wallpaper the second floor, and instead he installed the whole roof! I wasn't quite ready for the whole roof to go on, and it's going to make wallpapering some areas VERY difficult!Compliments of LPCullen

Day 11 09-06-2005

I haven't gotten much done today, except for painting the side trim on the house. I have to get that painted before Jimmy can install some roof sections. I've chosen a teal to paint the trim, but I am not yet sure that is the color I want to stick with ....Also, since I keep talking about the door that Jimmy installed in the RW house, here is what the diningroom looked like when the window was in:And here's that area now where the window was ...Compliments of LPCullen

Day 10 09-05-2005

Today I've been wallpapering. I've gotten the livingroom wallpapered, and this is what it looks like:Because Jimmy didn't realize that area in the bay was a floor, he had already gotten glue and putty all over it so I couldn't stain it. It will eventually be turned into a window seat. I also wallpapered the kitchen/diningroom area, and this is what that looks like:You may have noticed that there is a space left in the wallpaper at the bay window areas, where the decorative trim is. That is left

At last! I opened the box and took inventory and put all the plywood sheets into numerical order so I can find them without having to look all over for the numbers.I began reading over the instructions, I'll have to do the first read in increments. Meanwhile I studied the schematics and the photos to decide on rooms.A friend claimed this one before I ever got the box opened and has let me know some of the details she wants, so this will be the first house I have ever built to anyone's specs bu

Day 09 09-04-2005

Well, it took a couple days, but I have the Westville completely primed, and the interior has two coats of semi gloss white on it as its primer for the wallpaper.I now begin putting the paint on the exterior of the house, and I will use two coats of it. I am using a very pale mint green, semi-gloss, and I plan on using different shades of green as accent colors. Because this house will be one that I keep, it's going to have some color to it. As usual, I turn the house upside down to paint it. I

Day 08 09-01-2005

Jimmy is FINALLY finished with the siding. Did I mention that siding was very tedious work? Very tedious! Now I get to play for a little while. I am putting a "primer" on the exterior of the house, using one coat of white semi-gloss paint. I do this for two reasons: 1) the siding really absorbs paint; and 2) it helps the actual color of the paint that I choose to go on evenly. If you looked closely at the siding in the previous posts, you will note that the siding pieces are different colors. I

Day 07 08-30-2005

I wasn't quite happy with the way that the siding joined together, so Jimmy "trimmed" it out. He took a piece of siding, lightly scored it down the middle and then bent it. He then took those pieces and placed them on the edges of the house. Here are pictures of what that looks like. Compliments of LPCullen

Day 06 08-28-2005

Jimmy has continued to put the siding on the house. Once he gets a section on, he then takes his exacto knife and trims it down.Siding is very tedious work! You have to put a little on, weigh it down and let it dry, put a little on, weigh it down and let it dry ... Then once it's dry you have to trim it down. Jimmy spaces the siding pieces 1/2 inch apart. He has now gotten most of the siding on and trimmed up. Just one little area to go.Compliments of LPCullen

Day 05 08-27-2005

The bay windows have been installed, and Jimmy is putting on the siding. Because the siding will curl up, once he glues them on there, he is using paint cans to hold the down while they dry.Compliments of LPCullen

Day 04 08-15-2005

The walls are now all up and the base shell is almost complete, but I've realized that once the bay windows become installed, the decorative wood work from the outside will not be accessible, unless you are triple jointed in every bone of your body. So, I've painted the areas that will be inaccessible after the bay windows are installed.Compliments of LPCullen

Day 03 08-13-2005

Jimmy now has the walls up for me. He really likes how this house is going together. Because we're going to use the siding, wood putty will be used minimally.Compliments of LPCullen

Day 01 08-12-2005

I've opened the box and pulled my floors out. I have them sanded and ready to be stained. I'm going to use Minwax Golden Pecan for the color of the floors.Compliments of LPCullen

well today I bit the bullet and started shingling the house. I was disapointed in my shingles as they are in 2 different shades and the darker shade turned green when I added the pecan stain to it. but actually with this house having such a story book theme to it and the walls are green it only enhances it....well I hope sothats my story and Im stickin to it. still havent done anything with the porch. I will admit after the first time of trying to figure out how the porch post supose to look Iv

finally

I got held up on the Westville because I bought a piece of plywood a few weeks ago, to make walls out of, and then didn't get a chance to cut it. We had visitors for two weekends in a row so I only just made it to the hangar with my wood yesterday. Geoff helped me cut it down to size with his radial arm saw.So, I now have a wall for the living room (to go up against the stairs) and also for the bedroom (to block the stair hole from the room). Here's what it looks like upstairs: There will be an

9.) The exterior finally has a personality!

OK, the Westville is getting lovable! The exterior is finally beginning to look the way I want it to look. I gave up with the weathered grey – I just could not get the colors the way I wanted them to be, and I was destroying the siding in the process!I painted the exterior a light grey and the trim a semi-gloss white enamel. The door is Air Force Blue since the owners are Air Force officers. The chimney is not finished. The roof shakes are stained MinWax Golden Pecan. The roof is all the same co

well I got bogged down on the shutters and window trims so I have decided to wait till house is done before deciding to have shuttersbut I actually like the simpleness of the house.so tonight I have all of my foundation trim painted and closet wall and door primed and painted. I also printed off stone wall printie and have mod-podged it to the foundation.you can find a photo in my webshots album...if it wont post on here. so tomorrow when I come back everything will be dry and ready for instal

8.) Merrily we roll along ...

The exterior-- I really don’t like the way the grey painting turned out. I am trying for a weathered grey look. I might wait until I have the roof done and all the trim (white) is done to see if the grey color looks better. If not, I will repaint. -- The chimney “form” is sturdy packing foam. It will be sprayed with Fleck-Stone in a whitish-grey flecked color.-- The second floor porch will go from the bedroom to the den (which will have exterior glass door matching the one in the bedroom).-- The

continuing

Well although I am doing some other things I have been working all along on this Westville. since I do want to shingle this house I did not use the siding...time will not allow for it at this time for me. but Ive used my textured paint from the Glencroft and am using it again for the outside. but my daughter would not allow me another blue house so I am painting it a sage green ...at the moment....I did soften it just a bit with some white. the only problem at this time I forsee is picking out

more siding

I put on a bit more siding today: The living room bay isn't permanently glued in. I managed to glue the two walls to each other, without gluing them to the floor and ceiling. This way I can take it out for wallpapering. I haven't glued the narrow pieces onto any of the bays yet.And here are the humble beginnings of my kitchen cabinets:It turns out that the Realife kit I bought off eBay is missing some pieces. The frustrating thing is, the kit doesn't come with an itemized list of parts, so I
