  2. Because, you always want just a few more! I am very drawn to this scale and similar because I (probably) won't run out of space for them. I started with the Hallmark Nostalgic Houses and shops, and then went straight down the "dollhouse for a dollhouse" rabbit hole, researching far and wide. I do feel like I missed the Golden Age for this scale, now that the NESM houses and the Cynthia Howe ones and even the Greenleaf ones are no longer sold. For now, I have bought a few inexpensive kits from overseas, just to make sure I like building this tiny scale. (It's possible that I just like looking at them. 🙂) If my eyes and fingers survive, maybe I will treat myself to something more complex. Would love to hear about others' adventures in 1:144.
  3. Also check eBay. I have found several lights that are no longer being made on there. Houseworks used to make several 1/2 scale fixtures. There are other suppliers that do make fixtures, but some do come with stickershock. These stores I have ordered from with good customer service. 4. Invest in blue painters' tape or beige masking tape and dry fit your house first, taping it together before you glue or nail anything, and spend time looking at it (and conversing with it, to find out what it wants to become). I usually prime the parts I will want to paint or paper later and stain what I want to stain. Since I tend to build from the ground up, I decorate the interior of the first floor before progressing to the second floor. I don't electrify my houses, since I build them for myself to play with, but having the house in dry fit will h elp you decide h ow you'll want to run your wiring as you and the house decide how it wants to be lighted.
  5. Got my first dollhouse kit from realgoodtoys.com and not really sure what and where to start instructions say to paint first before assembling but couple questions before I start how do I know what rooms I’m painting do I paint them all same color so it wouldn’t matter if kitchen living room bedroom etc .. and planning on installing electric (read to use electric tape, easiest) but tape would show and how do I know where I’d need electric as in lamps etc.. and do I have to wallpaper every room to cover electric tape? thank you for any advice and help Kim

  7. I'm going to make it a little worn and dirty, it scared I'll ruin it.
  8. There are some nice 1:24 lampshade printies on the Small Stuff Digest's printmini site: https://www.printmini.com/printables/lamps/lamphq.html https://www.printmini.com/printables/lamps/lampptn.html https://www.printmini.com/printables/lamps/shades.html https://www.printmini.com/printables/lamps/shadesptn.html
  9. Earth n Tree still has a good selection of half scale lighting but it's getting harder and harder to find. I used to get mine from the UK but those shops are gone or not stocking them either. I have a lighting tutorial on my website blog you might find helpful using the little string LED lights. Make shades with beads or small lids.
  10. That would be a fun line-up to do!
  11. I’m working on my second house, and my first with lighting. It’s the half scale Vermont farmhouse from RGT, and I’m kind of at a loss for lighting. Any suggestions for a beginner on what I should pickup? Everything I’ve found seems to be geared for 1:12 scale.
  12. I love this! Must be a shop window display. Could be my old kitchen. I just might try this one, complete with mannequins (life-size dolls?).

    The Ginkgo House

The 1:12 scale Ginkgo House started out as an architectural model for my own some-day house, but quickly became a 'dollhouse' once I added a few pieces of furniture to double-check scale, traffic flow, and so on. Influences for this miniaturist project are Mid-century modern, Craftsman bubgalow, tradutional Japan, old Mexico, with some old Ireland, found objects, and some Wabi Sabi thrown in. A real blender of favorite inspirations. Fingers crossed it all comes togther seamlessly! The walls are constructed with a triple layer of foam core to mimick real walls of framing, drywal, and exterior sidings. The floors are double-layer foam core fixed to a 1/2 inch sheet of styrofoam. Everything is then wrapped in glue and newspaper for a strong but light structure. I then paint everything in a pure white gesso for that 'blank canvas' feel before decorating. The white also helps find any flaws. The Ginkgo House is an L-shaped floorplan, with shared spaces (kitchen, dining room, living room) in one 'wing', and personal spaces (bedrooms, bath, home office) in the other wing. The inside of the L will open on a courtyard for sitting and entertaining, the outside of the L wll have the entrance and carport, and a private graden. I am still looking for the perfect dolls, but my opt to make my own. I found a perfect 1/12 scale of my absolute favorite car in the world, and the carport will babysit it!

    Irish Famine Bench 3.jpg

Perhaps one day I will have a whole family of foamcore people! Maybe a foamcore doggy to go with them.🙂
  16. Quick peek at the full floorplan. Doesn't look like much yet, but it'll all come out in the wash, or warsh, as Grandma used to say. Still deciding which wall/s to pop off for play, or just keep it top access.
  17. I like it. It could be a child's bench. Maybe it belonged to the little foamcore person in the other pic when they were little and is a treasured keepsake. Or it could just be small. RL furniture isn't always the right scale for where it resides. It may look different too once your floors, wallpaper and other trim go in.
  18. One room school houses were primitive so don't make it too perfect. I like what you have done. Reminds me of the salvaged RL one on the grounds of a nearby museum.
  19. How do we learn things if we don't make mistakes? And a belt sander helps a whole lot...
  20. I wish I knew this before I started my one room school house room box. My students also had this problem, but they still are learning how much glue, mod podge, and paint is too much.
  21. Oh my goodness! I had a grocery store similar to that with the little people and their shopping carts running around in isles powered by a magnet underneath. What Memories! I also think my Holly Hobby doll house was the same way. Not the wood manufactured one, I had a cardboard one with a Holly Hobby doll and plastic furniture. The doll fit in a stand with a magnetic base driven by a wand underneath. That house was the only thing that did not survive the leak in the she shed.
  22. So, I'm thinking about the large dollhouse lighting kit, supports 32 bulbs. Has anyone done underfloor with the tape wire? Underfloor wiring? Any thoughts?
  23. So I added the backrest - sort of messed up the final bit but it is done except for a little cleanup
  24. There is part of the Florida Trail that begins at a big, friendly sign about three miles east of Pensacola /Beach that goes through the dunes on the Sound side of the road, one of the few places people are allowed to walk the dunes in Florida. About halfway there;s an abandoned fish hatchery that a nesting pair of bald eagles have claimed and they like to check out hikers. There's also a primitive campground nearby. There's a campground at Ft Pickens with RV and tent sites. One of our old hiking buddies, Sandra Friend, has written some good trail guides for Florida.
  25. Sanding the worst parts might make you feel better in the long run, and I tend to zone out doing repetitive routine stuff like that and have conversations with the house. By all means dry fit to see where you might not have to sand as much.
