you can find a great variety of woods and shapes here
http://www.dollshouse-tiles.co.uk/
I used their tiles for building the wooden floors of my "Neverland" and at "La chasse aux papillons" (see my albums), excellent quality, great and friendly service; I know this supplier is selling is product on e bay too but i do not know the shop name but, for reference, he has images of my floors at Neverland

I would use a strong kraft knife and a metal rule or, if you have a dremel, a suitable, small, milling nail...but, again, a kraft blade should be ok; this was my way on MDF and plywood too.
Be careful

your car is a real beauty...if 1:24 cars look too big is because our 1/2" (1:24) scale houses are "partially" (something is right something is not) undersized , especially the bigger ones; there is a sort of "compression factor" used by manufacturers to keep the final size reasonable...the same happens for railroad models... they look right but...are not

Hi MissMac, I am glad to see you here, welcome from me too

Normally plastic kits, in particular the most recent ones, are very accurate, especially when they are in the larger scales as 1/14, 1/24, 1/32...
Plastic modellers are very demanding and always ready to crucify the manufacturer in case of mistakes.
Second question...1/2 scale or 1:24 scale is the same, whatever you are thinking about

congratulations from me too

A stunning imposing masterpice, details are perfect and the photostory absolutely real bringing us back to that golden age of ships. Congratulations john from an italian boat modeller :-)
