  1. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

Finished the exterior walls and glued the roof. There's still a lot more to do on the porch and bay window, I'll probably use a light stain for the floorboards here. And I need to test stains for the shingles... I'm thinking either grey or black. I'm a bit undecided about the roof decoration... with or without finial, and style of cross bracing. I'm thinking about modifying the original vergeboards... if in the end they look too "heavy" and thick perhaps I'll cut new ones.

This is a monotone image of the kit in built form, but flipped. I'm building this one so that the door is on the left.

  3. From the album: A Hermitage

This is a kit by Shannon at Red Cottage Miniatures and has the motif of the flowers and squirrel that is on the Nutcote house. I've painted this one with several light coats of Americana Light Buttermilk acrylic paint, stained the top with Miniwax Golden Oak stain marker, and coated the entire piece with Americana Duraclear Satin Varnish. I wanted a little bit of a shabby chic look. Her kits are so precisely cut they go together very nicely. I rushed a bit with this one and there are some flaws (on my part), but I’ll take more care with the next pieces. Shannon's kits have lasercut hardware. For the working drawers she has cute plates with handles, but I couldn’t resist using some of the flowers from the cut motifs as drawer pulls here. https://www.etsy.com/shop/RedCottageMiniatures?ref=l2-shopheader-name
  4. From the album: Moonlight Retreat — 1:24 scale Lighthouse Reimagined

I’m bashing a GL 1:24 scale lighthouse into a tree house. It will be home to some forest creatures and a special character (to be revealed later). I’m using the kit as the bones for a redwood, damaged at the top. I’m using Houseworks windows and door and it will be electified. Dry fit is started I’m waiting on another matching window and shutters for the second floor, due to arrive this week.

Here's a furniture test. This is why I'm not very fond of papper flooring, it always looks a bit odd in my builds... no texture, too shiny... I don't know what to do about the floor, so all advice is welcome! I was thinking about doing a period decor in this kitchen, sadly I don't have a victorian stove that will fit this scale. I love cabinets but the layout of this room seams better suited for an old fashion kitchen.
  6. I’ve finally gotten back into building after a long time away. So I’m selling some houses and furniture to make room. I’ve listed Maus Haus on eBay and will be listing additional items soon. https://www.ebay.com/sch/dal.gd12012/m.html?item=332653776209&ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562
  7. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

It looks a bit wonky at the moment, some key parts haven't been glued yet. I'm having a serious dilema with the wiring strip, where can I hide that black chunk of plastic? The house has no foundation, I thought perhaps I could hide it under the stairs but I tested it now and it won't fit... if I place it in the attic it will be visible, what should I do?
  8. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

Added the stairs and testing the ceiling template. Still needs some work, the light is terrible quality but the center area is embossed with a metalic copper finish imitating a "tin" effect. I thought it would be a nice combo with the walnut stain on the stairs. I'm thinking about doing baseboards in the same stain color as the stairs, would the door and window frames look better in the same color or cream (as in the kitchen)? And I need sugestions for the color of the front door... light or dark wood? Or maybe a color, like blue? I want something that will contrast with both the exterior trims and the interior, it's a paladian style double door.
  9. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

Trying to finish the attic area this weekend, I was thinking about using these foldable stairs by Alessio Miniatures but I think the ceiling height might be too short... they will end up being barely visible when folded (the roof will fit into that gable frame). What do you think?
  10. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

I've finished the walls and ceiling in one room, I'm calling it 'the kitchen'. This is pretty much the same style I used in my Beacon Hill kitchen, but in reduced size. I've cut the wainscot strips and trims out of basswood, same for the arched doorway frame in the bay window wall (the kit doesn't come with this frame). The ceiling is embossed papper, same style I did for my Fairfield.
  11. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

Started working on the half scale Chantilly on the weekends. A smaller project like this is perfect for when I don't have a lot of free time, unlike the Beacon Hill I can just work in small bursts here and there. This is the assembly as of right now, I am currently working on the interior walls for the attic so the roof will only be glued when the decor in that room is finished (it's too narrow to work otherwise). For the exterior I'll be doing vertical siding with diamond shaped shingles. I was considering either light yellow or beige for the walls, but it wasn't constrasting enough with the trims so I ended up going with this grey-brownish color instead. Last night while testing the roof fit I had to modify the tip of the front gable to fit my roof modifications. I have 'straightened' the eaves so this house won't have that top roof overhang as in the original kit.

Playing around with decorations, trying to control myself to not go 'over the edge' with the clutter... I might have added too much already lol.

This is a closer shot of the gold detailing. 8+ hours of work later this step is done! It's ready for assembly

I stained the interior to get different depths of color for the wood. It still needs to have the relief carvings painted gold.
  15. Hi there! I wanted to pick a small dollhouse project to try to finish before the next local dollhouse show this year (around October), not sure I'll find the time but I'm going to try. I've choosen the Chantilly half scale, I've seen some pictures of this house finished in the gallery looks really interesting and not very big or complicated. I was wondering, how long does it take to put this house together on average? I've checked the sticky thread with construction times but this house wasn't listed on it. Also ordered some speed strip shingle packs to go with it, heard good things about those and it seams it's faster than applying individual shingles.
  16. Hi everyone, I'm having problems figuring out how to assemble the tower roof on the Fairfield 1:24. I've re-read the instructions over and over but this bit is giving me a headache, from what I can understand the triangle sides are supposed to look curved after glued? They are completly flat out of the kit, and I'm having a hard time understanding how to make them bend gently along the base. Step no. 5 and 6 on the instructions (section K) says "glue along the bottom edge only" and "be sure glue has ample time to cure before proceding to the next step", so I should glue the front and back at the base only and let the glue dry a bit or dry completly? If I let the glue dry completly at the base, how can I glue the the mid section of the roof without moving the sides? The wood seams a bit too thick to bend enough for the curve on the interior base, or maybe I'm a bit afraid of trying to put too much pressure on it. How should I prevent the sides from moving at the base while I try to bend them? I've looked around in other people's blogs and posts but couldn't find a lot of info about this sub-assembly. A lot of houses seam to have a straight tower roof without curve, I'm not sure how they did this assembly as most pictures have the roof already painted and/or shingled. I tried dry fitting them straight but there would be huge gaps between the sides, so I'm a bit stuck in this step and don't know what to do :s If you have built this sub-assembly, or other similar curved roof structure and have some tips that could help me I'd really apreciate it. I'm mostly having trouble understanding how to bend the kit parts of the roof in a way that will look even for all roof sides. I haven't glued or modified any parts of this sub assembly yet, I want to put it together in the same shape as instructed by the kit but can't figure out how to do this. If you have any suggestions that could help they are very welcome, thanks!
  17. Good Morning! I just wanted to share a link to the Shapeways shop I opened over the weekend. I have 3D printed Kitchen Miniature Sets available currently with more products coming soon! The sets are available in 1:12 and 1:24 scale and include a Stockpot w/lid, Skillet, Small Saucepan, Baking dish, Loaf pan, Pie plate, Mixing bowl, Rolling pin, Pitcher, Tea kettle w/lid and a Small mug. They are made of a sturdy nylon plastic and can be painted easily with just about any type of craft or model paint. I'm happy to answer any questions you have and would love to hear what you think!
  18. From the album: ~ Fairfield ~

Trying to get in as many details as possible in one shot, now you can see the underside portion of the porch as well as the other roofs. I've tried to keep a certain consistency on the design elements for visual balance. I've used the same style of "wood boards" on the porch ceilling and the gables, same for the details of the tower, the fretwork on the porch matches the gable end trims, the swirly patterns on the brackets echo eachother and help to bring all of these components together. And now I can finally say the building process is over! Or at least all the main components are in, I will need to retouch the paint on some spots but I doubt I'll be adding anything extra to the main build. It is pretty heavy as it is
  19. From the album: ~ Fairfield ~

The porch furniture in place, I might add a few more acessories and flowers later. Trying to take closeup pictures made me realize that the paint on my siding needs retouching on some spots, ops! I'll take care of that later xD I'm enjoying the mix of dollhouse miniatures with diorama/model style pieces, closeup and details of the bench and plantstand here and here, the doormat is lasercut mdf by Arjen Spinhoven. Plant pots are Falcon and Cobaanii models, plants made with supplies from Woodland Scenics, Miniature Garden and Melissa's Miniwereld.
  20. From the album: Flowers and Plants

I wanted to create the Bearded Iris and Parrot Tulip design in 1:24 (half) scale and these are the result. I had also started work on my own design for 1:24 scale delphiniums.

  21. From the album: Fairfield Furniture & Accessories

I made this cute little cane chair using toothpicks, sponges for the cushions and navy fabric. The palm is a kit from SDK Miniatures. The little vase I found online and will make a little wooden stand for it. Lounge room pieces are coming together!
  22. From the album: ~ Fairfield ~

The tower area is not big but looks very cozy, the way the light shines in makes it perfect for a small reading corner. Testing some options, I thought about adding a desk here but since there is an office on the other side of that door it would feel a bit repetitive perhaps. I'm still not sure about the credenza but that wall looked too empty without it. My tiny rotating shelf sits between the stairs and the couch, you might wonder why I put so much detail into something and then 'hide' it away lol... but that's the spot I had in mind for it.
  23. From the album: Misc Minis

I wanted a bookshelf for the top floor tower of my Fairfield, but the low height of the ceiling in this area made it a bit complicated. Then while visiting family during holidays I saw this lovelly rotating bookshelf that doubles as a sidetable and I decided I must have one. As a book lover I'm always running out of space to store books (and room on the walls to add more shelves...), these are so space efficient and practical! On top of that it looks really good anywhere I've decided to make one of these in miniature, this is accurate 1:24 size and fully functional. The shelf section rotates 360 degrees to make it easy to pick your read, and the wheels also work so it can be moved around! None of those features are very useful in a miniature house, but it adds to the fun and looks ;) I did not take pictures before assembling, but it's probably easy to figure out how this works: the moving portion is connected to the base with a screw and the wheels are miniature working brass casters (many thanks to the folks here on the forum who helped me find them!).
  24. From the album: ~ Fairfield ~

Closeup of the bookshelf in place, I thought about moving it to the living room where it would be more visible, but I just love how well it fits this area. Details and pictures here.
  25. From the album: ~ Fairfield ~

This area is a bit hard to decorate, low ceilling, narrow passage... also not easy to get a goog angle with my phone lol. I've left the top rail detacheable to be easier to access, otherwise I'd be struggling to arrange everything with tweezers
