Hi Everyone, I'm new and super excited and a little overwhelmed. My Beacon Hill kit just arrived and I've never done anything like this before. I'd love some tips as to how to get set up as far as the workspace. For example, should I get a piece of plywood to build this on and if so what size is recommended? Are there any suggestions for a table I could buy maybe at home depot, etc. that would be a good workspace for this? What does everyone else do to prepare for this type of build? Thanks! Howdy everyone! I've been especially quiet on here lately (mostly lurking ) on account of work and family changes in RL. My Orchid is near structural completion. The interior is ready for furniture and tiny, lovely things, but I'm still working on the porch (bashed from a few scraps and some constructions of my own) and some of the gingerbread. Of course, this progress story excludes shingles, but I'll get to them! So, in short, though my member album is currently empty I hope to have photos up soon! I've been stubborn and wanted to wait until the build was "ready" before taking photos . I'm learning (the hard way) there's no such thing! However, in order to get this exterior finished (including my greenhouse and 'cellar' additions), I need a little help! What do y'all use for bases on your lovely little homes? Do folks normally use plywood or some form of foam? How far out beyond the house's foundation do folks generally build the base? In order to support the additions, I think it would be best to have my base in place before I attach them to the sides of the house (unless, of course, you all don't feel it's necessary). Also, is there any particular base that is better/worse for landscaping? Happy to hear your thoughts or be guided to a helpful thread Hope everyone is having a pleasant summer so far!

I covered the base, fireplace, exterior chimney/fireplace and planter with the faux 'stone' bumpy paper purchased on eBay. It just requires wallpaper paste and is VERY forgiving! -
I want to glue my Arthur onto a base, as it just feels very flimsy to carry it around and rest it on the thin wood. So, I found a piece of plywood 24x24 inch at Ace this morning, about one third of an inch thick. That gives me about 3 inches on each side and back, plus a generous space for a front yard and some landscaping. How have you prepared a base in the past? Did you seal it, then paint it or paint first, then seal it? How about the underside of the base? Same preparations? The edges are looking raw, so I'll need to spackle those too. Or do you use a base that is exactly the same size as the house itself? I do want to minimise the space used, also minimise the storage space required. For shipping purposes - would it be better to have a base that is large enough to cover the space of the roof overhang too? That way, if the edges bump against a crate, the roof isn't the first thing that takes all the strain. I don't want to glue any plants onto the base, so might just landscape with a few rocks/front path and paint the different areas. I have quite a few of those Lemax Christmas trees to arrange around the house. Any advice is most welcome!

Okay, while I'm contemplating the next steps of my Lily's build, I realise that there is a very big empty space underneath the house. One of the structural support pieces is very flimsy (laminate peeling off and all, but no dry rot that I can see) and instead of trying to copy-cut a replacement solid wood section underneath the house, I wondered if I could use expanding foam to fill the entire bottom of the house. It will support the weight of the whole house; prevent insects from moving in unnoticed; can be sanded down when dry (so won't be noticeable anywhere else). The Lily has the latticework on the bottom of the base - I will probably line it with white cardstock before putting the foam in - don't want foam coming out of those gaps! What do you think?

I have to share my cool find in the craft department at walmart last night. You know how every now and then you stumble across something and the light bulb comes on over your head? :idea: (that gets me such funny looks in the store when I start yelling and dancing around like that) Anyway, the "Eureka!" moment occurred when I was looking at the wooden plaques that they sell (which make excellent bases for quarter scale houses BTW) and I saw what they call a Wood Tile Board. It's made by Plaid and is a very shallow tray (about 1/16th of an inch recess) with 9 wooden tiles in it. The whole tray is about 14" x14" and cost $7. I tossed the tiles into my scrap box and hugged the frame. LOL! The wood is nice around the edges and it's sturdy enough to hold a half scale house. The size is absolutely perfect for landscaping and the slight recess is enough support to help hold a fence upright. I'm really excited because it's just a beautiful finish to a half scale house and it's ready to paint, glue on the house, and landscape straight from the store. No cutting or sanding required. Yay! I have a half scale Tennyson and a half scale Rosedale both in dry fit and tried them on the board and it's a perfectly proportioned fit. I'm going to go back and buy their entire stock! Deb
