  1. This partially finished Beacon Hill Dollhouse was left in the house we just purchased and we'd like to find it a loving home. It seems to be wired for lighting and there's wood for siding in the box still. We live in Cheyenne Wyoming but would be happy to meet if your within a couple hours. We're not even sure how much to ask for this, so any advise on that would be great.
  2. From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

This floor had promise before I ruined it post-installation. In retrospect I should have stained the dark pieces darker and the light pieces with something like pecan color. I don't think I have enough wood siding strips left to attempt a re-do so I'll rip it out and start over with a new design.

I ran out of trim while cutting the wood pannels, now I'm crossing my fingers hoping I ordered the correct size lol... This will delay the work in this room for a while, in the meantime I got started on the floors. I'm not sure how I'm going to finish the interior of the bay windows, they bottom will have a continuation of the pannels but I'm not very fond of the kit's pediments. Luckily the external ones are separate pieces for these. All the glass frames will be stained dark mahogany (as in the kitchen), I'm not sure if I should use the same stain on the interior frames or use a lighter color. The wall pannels will be stained a medium Teak or Cherry, I'm trying to follow a combo of light floors + darker walls I've seen in houses from this period that I got really fond of

Floor done! I love victorian style tiles, this went a lot faster than I expected but on hindsight I shouldn't be tiling during the night, not enough light to see that I was making a mess... lol. Had to wash them several times and there are still bits of glue here and there, I'll let them dry overnight and clean them up later.
  5. From the album: ~ Beacon Hill ~

I got back to work on the Beacon Hill, health issues forced me to take a break, then shortly after leaving the hospital I incapacitated my right hand and couldn't work on my crafts for a while... but I'm excited to get back to work and trying to finish up the kitchen area Working on the floor at the moment, I really like how the walls turned out.. tiles will follow the same color scheme: green, yellow, white, brown.

I'm trying to pick up the pace on the construction of the Beacon Hill, it's been slow so far but I finally began gluing the house together and can now move on to the design choices for my interiors. I had to order new doors for the house since the ones from my kit were damaged (bad plywood surface), got pre-built ones to save costs (wood + hinges) but in turn I had to modify the openings for them to fit (if you ever plan on building this house: test the doors before you glue the walls in!). I've also modified the walls in this area: changed the position of the 'kitchen' door, drilled in new tabs on the floor and changed the shape of the walls, so this corridor and the 'living room' (right) with have a rectangle shape. Now I need to finish the stairs, wallpaper this room and finish the ceiling portion between the stairs and front door before I glue the front tower wall in. This means I have to do a lot of design choices now that I won't be able to change later. Thanks to advice from other builders I have cut the tabs on the stairs so now they are sliding in and out really well, they are still in dry fit at the moment: I'm in the process of testing wood stains, not sure if I'll stick to dark walnut or finish with a mahogany coat? I was a bit undecided if I should use red or turquoise wallpaper here, with this one perhaps dark wallnut will look better? For the floors, I'm thinking parquet in either cherry or light mahogany as main color. I'm also considering adding wainscot to the walls and a decorative pediment over the doors.

Ceiling is up, needs retouching here and there but my arm must get some rest lol. Now I must cut templates for the bay windows and start working on the pannels. The fireplace will be on that wall (+ 2 wall lights surrounding it), I think I'll leave a wall socket on the opposite side of the room for a floor/table lamp.
  8. Hello, I was hoping someone could help clear up my confusion; I am building a Beacon Hill house and this is my first one. It is going smoothly, at least for being early in the process, but I am confused by the instructions and everything I read online tells me I should be terrified of gluing when I am not suppose to. The step I am on is Step 4 of section B. I interlocked the Right Wall with the Second Floor but it says to, "Glue just the section of this joint between First and Second Floor (5), nowhere else!" But there is no joint that goes between the first and second floors. Which joint should I glue? Thanks for any help you can provide!
  9. Hi! I found my way to this site after trying to identify the two mostly assembled dollhouses I purchased for my daughter and I. One of them I have determined to be the Beacon Hill. I want it to have a "yard" so I purchased a brown IKEA table on wheels to mount it to while still being able to move it around our hobby house. I found this picture and love the atrium and basement concept. Does anyone now if this is a kit you can buy or is something the person probably custom fabricated? https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/e6/5e/06/e65e061da9c3cb0bde4277325031686a.jpg

I have attached the modified walls and wallpapered the rest of the corridor. I'm still working on the staircase trims, the final color will be the dark mahogany you see in the picture, I am thinking about doing the same for the doors. The living room and dinning room will be combined together in the same room, with this mod the room is now big enough to acomodate a seating area + a 6 seat table and chairs. I've primed the walls of this room in a dark color because they will be covered by wood pannels, not wallpaper. I've decided to try spackle, first time working with this material so I am winging it a bit. I am planning on using cast decorations on the ceilling and was afraid they would be too heavy on the template, so I decided to try to smooth the surface and glue them directly (electricity will run under the floor templates). Having some problems with the plywood, the lines you see are from the wood surface. I think I will have to apply a thicker layer for this to work, just not sure how that's going to work with the plaster on top... never tried to glue anything into spackle. I will probably also need to glue the wall from upstairs before I finish the ceiling, I've acidentaly covered up too much of the tabs lol.

Preparing the kitchen, need to finish the ceiling before I can move on to the woodwork. As I've mentioned in the Beacon Hill Builders thread, I felt very inspired by this kitchen so those are the colors I will use. I won't use cabinets thou, will try a period style this time ;)
  12. From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

With most of the dirty work completed, I moved the doll house into a second floor hallway so that I could continue to work on it while my daughter plays with it. We tend to work on opposite sides of the house whenever possible. I have to say she's been very patient with Daddy in the way for over a year now.
  13. I spent three hours last night reading the Beacon Hill Builders thread. It was so helpful!! However, many people have finished their houses because the thread was started many years ago. I thought maybe we should start a new one because I have noticed there are a lot of us BH-ers right now. Please join me in discussing this amazing and challenging house! So... Welcome to the 2nd generation! I bought my house in 2007ish. It was in storage for years and I just now have it back. I am FAR from finished. I just got done with the porch. I was glad to read in the other thread that I am not the only person who has had some arguments with this house! The staircase almost killed me, but the roof pieces weren't so bad because I cheated and cut off a few slices. Please share any BH questions, thoughts, or babble. We can do this!! Whooooot! Why did you choose the house? I did because it was purty and I wanted a loooong project. I got it.
  14. Hi everyone I am new here. I have been thinking about buying the beacon hill dollhouse kit. Now I only have experience with the Doll House Emporium houses so I don't really know what the quality is with the beacon hill. Are the pieces strong ? ( I once had a house from china and the pieces kept breaking). I just really want to know if the house will be strong and if the pieces are sturdy. Thanks for the help
  15. From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

Its been a year and a half since I started the interior of my Beacon Hill (err . . I mean my daughter's Beacon Hill). ;) I only get 5-7 hours a week to play . . I mean work on it, so it has been really slow going. I really admire the master mini builders that can produce something better than I've been able to do with a fraction of the time I've spent on mine!
  16. So I was planning on dressing up the 'doors' that came with the Beacon Hill kit and pretty them up a bit, but I'm feeling a bit disheartened to find that most of them are not in a good shape... they came with some pretty big imperfections (holes) on the 'bad side' of the plywood cutouts.... and I don't think I'll be able to cover these up I want my doors to have a wood finish so the plan was to stain them, but some of these 'holes'/'scratches' are not only deep into the plywood but also look darker around the edges (as you can see from pic above, looks like a burn mark) and I can't think of a way to disguise them without covering up the surface entirely. I'm trying to think what I can do about this and the most logical solution seams to be to just cut new ones out of wood. So I went to check on prices of the wood boards, plus hinges and the trims I'll need to dress up the doors, and it all started to add up... to the point I have to wonder if it would be cheaper to just buy pre-assembled doors and use those instead (even if I have to pry them out of the casings and hinge them). The Beacon Hill doorways seam to be a bit narrower than most "standard" dollhouse doors so I suppose I'll probably have to modify the openings to fit them? I doubt I could 'cut' the pre-fab door to fit and not look 'weird'. What should I do? My house is still in 'dry' fit so it wouldn't be a problem to widen the openings, but I am not sure if that's a wise decision considering the space around some doors isn't a lot (specifically, the second floor bedroom 'wardrobe' door). Have you had this problem before and what did you do to 'fix' the door and have a smooth surface? Should I just scrap them and make new ones from scratch?
  17. Hello everyone! About 6 months ago my husband and I decided we wanted to work on a hobby together. We'd built a dog house (mostly he did) and we had fun and were sad when it was over. After much deliberation (we have VERY different tastes) we both agreed on, and we're excited about, a dollhouse! For the past 6 months or so I've been doing some research and having fun putting stuff on pinterest but couldnt afford the actual kit and just kept thinking "someday." Well, my mom ordered us one for Christmas! It's the Beacon Hill and I'm so excited. We took the rest of our Christmas money and bought supplies and a folding banquet table to work on. I'll attach pictures of what we have so far. It's soooo much more intense then I ever imagined, the schematics and instructions feel like they're in another language. I learned today to make sure to work in a well ventilated area while staining wood, as I'm feeling slightly ill now lol. Live and learn. Anyway, I'm so grateful for this forum, it's been VERY helpful. I haven't quite figured out my way around it. I'm still trying to figure out how to view member galleries. But when I do find stuff it been awesome.. you all are awesome. I've also been reading the beacon hill thread but it looks like it's been several months since anyone has posted there. Just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for all the wonderful help that you who go before us newbies post online! P.S. nevermind, I can't add the pictures because I can't figure out how to make them small enough! I'm on my cell phone.
  18. I am nearing completion of my Beacon Hill and have run out of shingles since I decided to shingle the bays. My Beacon is a vintage kit from 1991 with the thicker shingles. I purchased some spare Greenleaf shingles from a Beacon kit off of Ebay recently, but they were from a more modern kit and were much thinner than mine. I only have the back tower roof left to do and estimate it will take about 100 shingles (including for cuts). Would anyone have spare any shingle strip sheets from an early 1990's GL kit that they would part with?
  19. From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

This floor was simple, but fun and fast to complete. If the wood strips came in 1/8" lengths I would have used those for the borders instead.
  20. From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

Well, technically the first floor was first, but this was the first one I attempted with the pre-cut 1/16" thick wood strips. Everything was stained in advance although some stain touch-up was required after installation.
  21. From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

This was my attempt at using leftover 1/16" wood siding strips as a floor after a disaster post installation. Although everything was going well and the floor was all glued in place, I got the "bright idea" to fill in a couple gaps with spackle / drywall mud. It was a dumb idea! The stuff got stuck in the wood grain and looked terrible. I attempted to sand it out, but that just made the wood strips so thin that they started to bow and come detached. I'm going to have to gut this entire floor and start over. Oh, well, lesson learned.
  22. From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

This floor took me a while to do but I'm reasonably happy with it. The fireplace is one of the few splurges I purchased.
  23. From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

I created the floor in two sections because I still had the dividing wall in place. The more I looked at other Beacon Hill builds, the more I thought an open floor plan made more sense, so I pulled out the interior walls and reworked the floors.

    "Taking Sides"

From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

Working from the front of the dollhouse to complete the second floor hallway floor and patio finally gives my daughter the access to the entire back-side that she wanted.
  25. From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill

I found out the hard way that its easier to paint window trim and corners before attempting to put on any wallpaper. If you don't the tiniest of errors with the wallpaper show up clearly.
