I have decided to keep the exposed brick wall. I think once I have it completed with miniature accessories, it will add texture. -
What are the best ways and materials to create a plaster wall effect? Does anyone use cement or concrete mixes to create surface effects? I made an ancient Roman stove in 1/12 scale and used a mixture of spackle, water and tacky glue on the surface, tinted with a bit of acrylic paint. I am satisfied with the result but I'd like to find something that is easier to work with. I included a link to my new miniatures Facebook page where I have photos of the stove and other items I've made- I'd love any input or suggestions:) I https://m.facebook.com/Crafting-History-in-Miniature-145349899474628/

Has anyone ever inkjet printed a pattern of brick or stone on paper then used embossing powder/heat gun to texture it? ...clear embossing powder could be used over a color printout. Use a grey colored paper as the mortar or whatever color you want. Create tile too? If the printed pattern is spotty or grainy I think it would create a rough texture? ...would have to use the right kind of paper & probably hi-res image for heavier ink output? You could coat it with a mat finish?

The chimney is entirely made of paperclay (FWIW, I'm a big fan of Das Modeling Clay, rather than Creative Paperclay brand, because it's less expensive and seems to work about the same). The stone style is intentionally different on the inside of the building and the outside, but both are (intended to be) authentic to the region where this cabane is situated. -
I have two little bags of used brick, 150 pieces each. I want to brick the foundation of a San Fransiscan house. I made over 200 more out of Sculpy clay. Can anyone estimate how much I should make?

It was surprisingly easy to clean up the mortar. I used my fingers to rub off the excess from the brick surface, then went back with a damp paper towel to wipe down the bricks. I probably made 2 or three passes including cleaning each individual brick. Finally, I rubbed the brick lightly with a dry paper towel.- 1 comment

I like how this came out and I hope it is durable over the long term. It also occurs to me that if I want to return the bricks more to their rough (non-clear-coated) original state, I could sand them lightly with fine grit sandpaper to remove the clear coat. I also found some matte consistency clear coat as an alternative, but I think I'll stick with it the way it is for now.- 4 comments

So here's the final product with the tape removed. I'm going to need to do some clean-up of my stain on the roof, but no big deal.- 2 comments

Thank goodness I looked up the mortaring process here before I tried anything. A post from Ravenswing demonstrated the necessity of applying a clear-coat to the brick before mortaring. As the brick is water soluble, I found a can of spray-on satin clear coat that had an oil base. (Almost everything is water-based these days). A few coats of that and a day's drying time gave the brick a waterproof and mortar-proof top-coat that made clean-up a snap.-

The first side I attempted to mortar was a bit too runny, so I had to go back and do a second coat after it dried. With the mortar being too wet, it also required to be laid on its side until it dried. I also tried using a large animal syringe to inject the mortar the first time and determined that it was easier just to glop it on with my fingers and rub it into the joints. The other sides as in this pic, I made sure the mortar consistency was thicker, which allowed me to rotate the house without waiting for each side to dry. In both cases I added wood glue to the mix in roughly a 1:4 ratio. Hopefully this will help with strength and stability.-

Has anyone seen or done a westville using mini bricks? I think I'm ready to jump into my first full dollhouse and the westville seems the most inviting. I definitely want to bash it and change it, with a screened in porch and updated windows. Has anyone seen one done with brick? or have any experience with bricking a kit?

Got some more done today on the bricks and general wallpapering / trim inside. It's finally starting to look like a house. i'm really hoping my idea of sponging on "brick" colour works lol -
