From the album: My First Build: The Beacon Hill
Thank goodness I looked up the mortaring process here before I tried anything. A post from Ravenswing demonstrated the necessity of applying a clear-coat to the brick before mortaring. As the brick is water soluble, I found a can of spray-on satin clear coat that had an oil base. (Almost everything is water-based these days). A few coats of that and a day's drying time gave the brick a waterproof and mortar-proof top-coat that made clean-up a snap.-

The first side I attempted to mortar was a bit too runny, so I had to go back and do a second coat after it dried. With the mortar being too wet, it also required to be laid on its side until it dried. I also tried using a large animal syringe to inject the mortar the first time and determined that it was easier just to glop it on with my fingers and rub it into the joints. The other sides as in this pic, I made sure the mortar consistency was thicker, which allowed me to rotate the house without waiting for each side to dry. In both cases I added wood glue to the mix in roughly a 1:4 ratio. Hopefully this will help with strength and stability.-

This is the exposed brick chimney and fireplace for the attic room. I had trouble with the egg carton bricks coming loose after they got wet from painting and grouting. I couldn't get all of them to lie back down and finally gave up and just tried to make them look more like loose brick than loose cardboard. Believe me, they don't look any worse than the RL brick in my basement! -
Hello, I just picked up Houseworks #8208 Latex Common Brick Sheet for covering the chimney. I was told to use silicone adhesive to attach it. So, first question, if you use this product, which brand do you recommend and secondly, are there alternatives? Instructions say to use an all purpose construction adhesive. Have several glues in the house already! Thanks!

Hello, We just completed the chimney for the Bellingham Farmhouse and I plan to apply "brickwork" to it shortly. The kit comes with some powder and a decal set-up but I have seen advertised online some adhesive type bricks. I would like opinions of such products; how difficult (or easy) they are to apply and the final outcome. Also, if you have used and liked (or disliked) such a product I would appreciate the brand name. Thanks!

Hello! My husband is helping to build the chimney for our Bellingham. We are complete novices in things dollhouse and this aspect is no different. We have the instruction booklet and looking at the illustration on page 14, we are unable to get a clear understanding of what goes where, especially when it comes to the chimney bottom and center. Does anyone have a photograph of the chimney going up, perhaps, or an understanding of the problem here? Your help is appreciated. Helaine

Here is the chimney so far. THe next step is spray poly then grout. I am not sure if I will "age" it, I guess it depends on how it looks after grouting. -

Here is the first assembly. I need to finish bricking the base unit, and then tackle the transition from the angled base to the rectangular chimney stack below. As soon as I can get that completed, then I can begin glueing and painting. -

Here are the Bits and Bobs assembled but not glued. I did have to take off about 1/3 of the length of the copper tubing to get a better proportion compared to the rest of the chimney. -
