  1. From the album: The Willow

I have been slowly working on The Willow again. I am really close to finishing the attic area. This will be the servants quarters for my make believe Colonial family. Now I need to pull out all my furniture and see what needs to go where.
  2. I think I finally figured out how to put photos on. The first pic, with the stained siding and red shutters is how the dollhouse came to me. It is a kit from the 1980s that my father-in-law bought because his wife always wanted one and needed a project. Unfortunately she was ill and couldn't really work on it, but he did the build, siding, roofing, chimney and the staining. It's been in his basement ever since. He asked us to take a bunch of stuff from his house - clearing out so he can move to Florida, possibly - and was happy when I agreed to take the dollhouse. My mom also did a kit house from the 80s, and made it a Victorian paradise...except for her big fat cat who liked to chew tiny furniture and sit her big behind in the parlor. I honestly don't know what became of my mom's after she passed. I'll have to ask my siblings. I was living in another country back then so I don't know where anything went. But I feel like I'm continuing a project from my own family and my husband's family. Pic 2 is the first coat of blue I put on because I really hate stained siding. My version of this Colonial will be modern - something I'd want to live in - not period-correct like my in-laws were planning. The shutters are gone and I will be buying some louvered ones which will be black. The front door was broken so I bought another and it's glossy black paint is drying right now. Oh and I've since staged a miniature hurricane that ripped all the cedar shingles off the roof. I want asphalt. Luckily most of them came off without breakage so they'll be saved for something else. The 3rd pic is of the really filthy windows. Decades of being in the basement and being exposed to cigarette smoke left the windows orangey brown and it didn't come off with multiple tries at cleaning. I managed to get the "glass" out by only sacrificing a little wood trim (woot!) and will cut new mylar. Please note that I have my own big fat cat that is showing more interest in this project than I'd like. That's Esmé you can see through the window closeup. She's the deaf, problem cat. (I have two cats. The other hasn't shown any interest.) Does anyone recognize the kit?
  3. Hello Everyone, Like so many other new members, I too am glad to have found this site and was pointed here earlier by another member Thank you. I live in Rochester Hills, Michigan and just purchased my first home; a vintage Farmhouse, that was started and never finished. Its in all raw materials, so I plan to continue, make a few modifications and add electricity. I have worked on real homes, but never a miniature and find it amazing, a great place to unwind and be creative. Did anyone else find themselves running in all directions with excitement to do this and that? I find I have to slow down and take one thing at a time; quality not quantity! Well what I have is called, The Colonial Estate and made by S/W Crafts. If anyone knows anything about this one, please I would love to know as I can't find much information about it or the company as it is out of business. I hope to hear from some of you about your experiences and expertise in the miniature world. It's an amazing little world! Thank you, Gloria

    window detail

    From the album: Twin Colonials

I found this great pleated lace to make curtains! Looks very cute in all of the windows.
  6. Ah, craigslist has got its hooks into me again! I've searched all day for info about this one, but no luck. I thought it was a Worthington at first...but no...then I thought it was a half dozen other things...but again, no. A lot of "almost but not quite" possibilities. The flat rooftops on the wings and the large windows on the first floor are what I am not finding anywhere in my searches. Look familiar to anyone? They describe it as "antique, found in an Ohio farmhouse" but I don't know...does it really look antique? They only describe the size as "large" and the material as "wood." They're asking $75, and I will probably buy it if the seller ever responds to my inquiry. Might not happen, though, as its been listed for over 2 months. Maybe they just forgot to remove the ad. I seem to be attracted to large, obscure houses in need of rehab! This isn't good, because I don't have anywhere to put them.

    Colonial Room Box

From the album: The Great American Dollhouse Museum

This is a colonial room box on display in the Great American Dollhouse Museum. I love the staircase that would supposedly lead to an upstairs room.
  8. From the album: Miscellaneous Minis

I love Braxton Payne's work. This is the one inch scale Colonial walk in cooking fireplace. The pot hooks on this work, too.

  9. From the album: Half Scale Colonial

After two failed attempts at a wash on the shingles, I opted to paint them. Unfortunately, since my original plan did not call for black shingles, I did not paint the underlying roof black. You can't really see with the naked eye, but taking a flash photo helps you see where to do the touch ups. I am going to put the cap on and then do a little contrasting texturing to the roof. It felt good to get something done today.

    Colonial Floors

From the album: Half Scale Colonial

I really like this stain. It is what the builder used in my RL house.
  12. From the album: My Travel Finds

My latest find. This was in NE Philly on Craigslist. I got it for $40 and the guy delivered it to my hotel. Normally I take them on the plane with me as checked luggage, but since I am in a walking boot I made a stop at FedEx Office on my way to the airport. I can't wait to get started!

    Colonial Roof

From the album: Half Scale Colonial

Things are moving along. Half scale shingles are...challenging. I don't know if I will straight paint it or use a wash. I will let it dry overnight and decide.

    Colonial Attic

From the album: Half Scale Colonial

I like this paper. Same story as with the LR and kitchen...bargain basement. I think I might make a hole and a ladder for access.
  15. From the album: Half Scale Colonial

I am not sure how thrilled I am with the colors. I will have to see how they look with windows and furniture.

The living room. Same story on the wallpaper as with the kitchen.

    Colonial Kitchen

From the album: Half Scale Colonial

I haven't decided what to do on the ceilings yet. I have molding, but not sure what t do about texture. This is RL wallpaper I bought at "Asset Recycling." It is like a Habitat for Humanity Resale Store. They used to have hundreds of rolls of designer wallpaper for $1/roll. Not too long ago they dropped the price to 25 cents. Now they don't carry wallpaper anymore. The way they were talking, I think I was the only one that bought any.

    Colonial Exterior

From the album: Half Scale Colonial

I found a nice dark green mis-tint at Home Depot. I like how it came out. I am already thinking about using this color on another project.
  19. From the album: Half Scale Colonial

Okay, so this is how it is supposed to look when completed...more or less.
  20. I have an opportunity to pick up a Hofco Colonial Farmhouse kit. It is # KW-152. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I tried to find pics in the Galleries with no luck. There hasn't been one on eBay in recent months and I have found no Google pics other than a CL listing with the box and the famous Hofco black and white photocopy. Has anyone built one or seen one? Roughly what size is it? Compared to other kits, what is the difficulty level? (will I finish it in a couple of weeks or a few months?) Thanks all!
  21. From the album: My Travel Finds

Hopefully the Hofco kit I just bought will look something like this when I am done.
  22. From the album: My Travel Finds

My latest find. Unfortunately he had sold or given away the furniture and "goodies." This was in NE Philly on Craigslist. I got it for $40 and the guy delivered it to my hotel. Normally I take them on the plane with me as checked luggage, but since I am in a walking boot I made a stop at FedEx Office on my way to the airport. I can't wait to get started!
