  1. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Almost as soon as I saw the tall, one-room building that was this year's Creatin' Contest kit house, I knew I wanted to transform it into an old-style "sugar shack," also known as a maple-sugaring house (or in French-speaking Canada, a "cabane à sucre"). The sugar shacks that I've visited have had one tallish space for the evaporating of sap into maple syrup, and as soon as I started thinking about sugar shacks, I thought about the yummy goods that usually are sold next door, and then the Québec tradition of maple taffy pulling in snow...

... and I quickly had more ideas than I thought I might be able to handle!

So I used SketchUp, an AutoCad-type program, to create a plan for bashing the Contest kit and making scratch-built additions for the wood shed and the shop, and to try to keep my ideas reined in a little.
  2. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

In this shot you can see that the scratchbuilt shop has a huge opening on the wall which meets up with the Contest kit. In the kit house, the opening was designed to accommodate a garage door but I elected to use the opening to merge the two buildings, as if the shack had once had a solid wall which the Aucoins tore out to attach their shiny new shop and make the entire place hang together as a whole.

    Scrappy finished

From the album: The Scrappy, dollhouse made of scraps

I finally finished building the thing. I'm happy it's over with. My goal was to use up all the stuff that wasn't used building my McKinley and not to spend any money on it. The not spending money part meant I'd be having to cut my own molding and stuff like that. I knew I didn't have enough shingles to cover the roof so I ended up using cut up pieces from a cereal box and coloring them with colored pencils. I could go on and on with all the "micky mouse" things I came up with. All in all the house is sturdy and ready to be played with the last thing to do is put up curtains.

    Scrappy inside

From the album: The Scrappy, dollhouse made of scraps

I'm happy with the way it turned out except for one thing, I wish now that I had made the house deeper. It looks like a dollhouse that has been cut in half and is messing the back side.

    Finished!!

From the album: The McKinley kitbashed

I frammed the front outside with channel so I could slide a piece of plexy glass or clear plastic in and out. I want to keep the dirt and dust away and curious fingers too. lol The rest of the pictures show each room decorated and furnished....there are still a few things left to do with the decorating...but I suppose that part of a dollhouse never really gets done. Thanks for taking the time to look at my pics.

From the album: The McKinley kitbashed

Just about everything is done except for painting the draws. Ill end up removing the bedroom closet to make more space in the bedroom
  7. From the album: The McKinley kitbashed

By the time I get to the point where I can start wallpapering over a year has gone by since I started....I will spend months deciding on the color scheme and then creating the wallpaper. I printed all the wall paper on card stock. The room on the very right in the 3rd floor (the computer room) I used standard yellow paper folders cuz I liked the color. Once I started installing the trim I finally got a feeling of some satisfaction...up til then all I felt was total indecision and major confusion... Im the type of person that everything has to match and be eye appealing..and in a dollhouse of this type your going to be looking at it as a whole at first instead of individual rooms......so the wallpaper for each room needs to go with the rooms next to it and above or below it...then it has to go with furniture and decoration of the particular room its in ...... I thought I was going to go insane! Id start working on the wallpaper and never actually put it on the walls cuz as I worked thoughts would come to me like ' I just know this isnt going to look right next to that' or ' what if I cant find the right color scheme in a rug' etc... What a NIGHTMARE!! Check back real soon cuz Ill have the rest of the pics up and the finished product!
