From the album: Whitney Plantation, Wallace, Louisiana
Most of the furnishings at the Whitney Plantation are not original. The owner, a New Orleans attorney named Cummings, has purchased and continues to purchase antiques appropriate to the time and place. I was struck by the graceful lines of what was a rather large piece of furniture. This was in the small business office on the ground floor of the main house. (Note the brick floor. The entire ground floor was made of brick -- floor and walls. The walls were plastered, inside and out. The upper floor and attic were made of termite resistant cedar.)© Katherine Bennett 2014

From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop
I reckon it's cold and snowy out that window, but inside, it's too toasty to wear your leather jacket. Or your (oven) mitt? Somebody seems to have left one on the old desk. And it looks like the calendar above the desk is guiding the Aucoins through sugaring-season 2015.-

The little inkwell at the top right is a scrapbooking grommet/eyelet that I aged with acrylic paint. -

Antique standing desks like these were frequently seen at the head of classrooms in the 18th and 19th centuries, for the teacher to use. This one was made for the sugar shack so that the Aucoins can run over and do a little desk-work without having to get all the way up and down during a long day of sugaring! I gave it a high, metal stool like 1960s science classrooms used to have—inflammable, unstainable, and perfect for dragging around the shack if your feet get too tired. Contrast of time periods and materials, added usefulness for my little owners. -

From the album: Country House - Renovated
Amy has a Shirley Temple calendar on her desk, although I could not get a clearer picture of it. The girls were upset about Shirley's recent passing, but Grandma said her memory and all the good she stood for will live on. -

I like how this chair and dresser match. I also love the desk. -

This is a close-up view of the back section (which is actually the front section) of the master bedroom, which contains a roll-top desk and chest of drawers. The curtains match the skirt on grandma's vanity.
