I came across this advertisement for a dollhouse from 1906. Looks pretty close to the Appleby and could well be the inspiration for this homemade house.

Before I get too far along on this project I decided to start my "Time Capsule" which will go back into the closed attic. At Hobby Lobby I found the acid-free photo sleeves, in three different sizes.

The owner of the cottage stopped by to see how the renovations are coming. Isn't she adorable? Have to come up with a name for her.

    New Tenants

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

As the house becomes more of a real house, and I plan the furnishings, methinks maybe the figurine is not the right person for it. She's actually too tall (almost 7") and I'm not liking the two inseparable dolls. I already have these two resin dolls in my collection, so I just placed them in there to see how they look.

The paint runs on the back are original - Papa did that, not me. I have not painted "fresh" wood except on the back, where I painted the ends of the siding and the roofing, and the crossbars on the windows. Haven't yet decided what I'm going to do with the back. I'm going to Hobby Lobby tomorrow, so will look around for ideas.

To go with the apple motif, I thought a red roof would look good. Something bright and cheery for the new look.

    New Doorway

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

With paperclay, wood putty and paint - the revised doorway is finished. I recycled the doorposts from the downstairs door and fit them in the upper, new, section, then reinstated the original top framing pieces.

  10. From the album: The Appleby Cottage

After extending the doorway, it wouldn't look good to put a smooth piece of wood in the new section. Finally decided to go with Paperclay. Smooshed it all into place, then roughed it up a bit to resemble the rough hewn look of the original. This is before painting, and before the doorsills are in place.

    Bath Time!

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

Spent a couple hours cleaning the little house all up. My research said not to soak wood with water (which was my first inclination) so I used a shopvac to blow into the crevices, then brushed all unpainted surfaces with a copper-bristled brush, then blasted it with air again. After that I took a vinegar/water mixture (1:1) and using a soft rag washed all surfaces, inside and out. Looks much better!

  12. Hi everyone. I'm still looking for the Skilcraft Victorian Manor with Coach House, circa 1979. My parents originally purchased this dollhouse for me at Sears in Oregon, but I haven't been able to find any in kit on eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, vintage and antique stores; I just missed one sold off Craigslist in Long Island in last November. Anyhow...I am happy to pay for the kit and shipping or if you see it in your treasure travels, please PM me. I'm in Seattle, WA. I purchased the Corona Willow from Overstock, brand new in box, not opened - because it's so similar - but interested in trading for the Skilcraft. Here is a picture link or see attached file with some related facts: http://www.worthpoin...manor-429438549 (You do not need to be a member to view this website). Thank you for reading and happy dollhousing! Attached Thumbnails http://www.greenleafdollhouses.com/forum/uploads/monthly_01_2014/post-47513-0-24479200-1390672262.jpg
  13. here is the new picture. i have about 80% of the roof shingles finished. there is no ridge cap yet and the last two or three rows of shingles are not on. the last row's have to be fitted to siding and trim that is not here yet. this took me longer the i thought it would. next i am knocking the different sections apart so i can get to the second floor and put the hardwood floor on there.

    Flooring

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

These are the floor coverings for two of the floors. At first glance I thought they were pieces of RL linoleum, but they are light cardstock / heavy paper, with a shiny surface; 12" long by 8" wide.

    Dayton WA

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

Found this on the attic floor, which is the outside of the upper crate. I have probably mis-named this as Apple crates, since the box sides are solid, not slatted. I think the wood boxes for apples needed slats for the air could flow through the box. By enlarging this on my 20" computer monitor, it seems to read: Ed Hindler Co; Dayton Wash. Dayton is a very small town in Eastern Washington, about 350 miles from where I live now. I Googled the town, and the company, and found this: James J. Edwards, the highly efficient president of the Edwards-Hindle Company, conducting one of the leading department stores in southeastern Washington, is recognized as a foremost factor in the commercial development of Dayton. Mr Edwards worked in the store, then bought out the owner, who wanted to retire, and Mr. Edwards then revamped and renamed it the Edwards-Hindle Company - in October 1906. So my little house is no older than 1906 - and that year keeps popping out at me from all sides. I also have a photograph of my great-great-aunt in 1906 - and 20 years ago I made a room box depicting that picture. I highly doubt Mr. Edwards had anything to do with this little dollhouse, except to provide the boxes through his store, as he was a very wealthy man and could have purchased the best dollhouse on the market for his little girl.

These are in the best shape of all the curtains, and were in the lower left room, which I assume was the Parlor. The sheer curtain came just to the window sill, and the blue drapes went down to the floor. The blue ones are hand-stitched all the way around; very neat and tiny stitches. I'm hoping to put them back up.

    Doorway

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

Wanted to show the interior post of the doorway. Somebody worked VERY hard to carve out that doorway - no wonder it's so short! I think this would qualify as "hand hewn" like the old pioneer cabins.

    Upper story

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

I've got all the wallpaper and ceiling paper removed in the upstairs section. I removed the over-door "timber" because I'm going to extend the doorway to proper height. I'll put the beam back on after that.

These were in what I assumed was the kitchen (lower right) and are still in pretty good shape. I might be able to put them back up.

This is what was in the attic. Seems to be a little table with dishes/kettles on top. It's one piece molded plastic.

    Parlor Drapes

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

As I examine the house more closely I begin to see the workmanship, love, and care that went into it. These drapes, in what I assume to have been the parlor, have been carefully hand-stitched all the way around to hem them; plus the "rod pocket" at the top. A piece of gauze/mesh fabric, with lace stitched to the bottom, was used as the sheer curtain behind the drapes. I have taken down all the drapes, still hanging on all 8 windows, and washed them carefully. I put them all in a small basin of warm soapy water, soaked them for quite awhile, then gently squeezed them several times. By the third basin full the water was finally clear.

    Back View

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

Obviously it was designed to fit up against a wall, as the back is completely unfinished. The attic was completely closed off, with only an open window in the front of the house. But something was inside the attic and I couldn't reach it. So with DH's help we got the back attic wall pulled off. Not even ONE of the original nails has worked loose all this time and it was very hard to get the wall off!

    Side View

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

Studying the little house more closely I began to see how well it was made, and - more importantly - how lovingly it was made. Yes, it's non-typical and non-scale wood, but it is strong and carefully designed.

    Front View

From the album: The Appleby Cottage

This is a little house I bought sight-unseen because my aunt called me from a Thrift Store and said it was "adorable" and only cost $20. So I gave her the okay to get it for me. Because it is made from 2 wooden apple crates, I have named it "The Appleby Cottage." I was disappointed when I saw it, because it is only 2 apple crates put together and sided and roofed with RL siding and shingles. I relegated it to the loft of my craft cottage and filled it with some catalogs and odds and ends. At the beginning of the year I was doing some housecleaning, tossing unwanted and unused items from a previous business venture - and that involved emptying this little house. I decided to bring it down from the loft and use it as a more accessible cupboard. Well ... once Missy got down to where she could see me ... she began to chatter and I began to listen! (Who says dollhouses don't talk to us?)
