  1. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

In this shot you can see the large, vented dormer window, the vented cupola, and at the very top, what else? A maple-leaf weathervane. (Surprisingly, there are lots of maple-leaf weathervanes out there! The design of this weathervane is based on a real one in Fair Haven, Vermont.)

    The White Rose

From the album: The White Rose

Here is the view from the inside. The dormer and skylight really open up the third floor. (Of course the roof popped off the tabs when I moved the house to photograph it. ) I've cut the floor papers to fit each room but none are glued yet. I also decided to paper the kitchen (over the green) and plan to put in a board and batten look for the lower half of the walls. I was going to curve the Mansard roof like the Beacon Hill, but for now I think I'm done tinkering with the design. (I've got to wait until the stomach butterflies settle down from cutting holes in the kit before I do more alterations.) and I haven't decided if I want to give up the floor space that a curved Mansard would take, but I think it would look pretty!

    The White Rose

From the album: The White Rose

For the skylight I had thought to use a clear drink cup top, but for half scale they were just too big. I cannibalized a Houseworks bay window that was broken that I had and took out the window inserts. I lined them up and traced their outline onto the roof, and then drilled two round wholes, one in each corner diagonally across from each other. This way I could get the blade into the whole and cut along the edge to the inside corners to remove the area I wanted to open up. With a little sanding of the opening, the pieces fit real snugly. They aren't glued in yet, they're just fitted in there. I got a nice tight fit.

    The White Rose

From the album: The White Rose

Okay, I finally squeezed my eyes shut and took the plunge, and started cutting holes in the roof of my Rosedale. After much dithering, I decided to go for it. I wanted consistency with the windows, so I took the exterior trim piece for the front bay and traced its outline centered onto the front Mansard roof piece, then cut the opening for the dormer. I also used that piece to trace a copy onto a piece of 1/16th inch basswood to replace the trim piece because I'm going to use the piece that came with the kit for the dormer.

    The White Rose

From the album: The White Rose

This wall has no windows, but I will be adding the chimney for the fireplace here so I don't want to cut any additional holes here.

I still need to cut the angle side pieces, but that shouldn't be too difficult. I'm using a piece from the kit that is for the porch in this dry fit and it's just about exactly the right size for the dormer roof piece. So I'll cut another one from scrap.
