From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop
This handmade stool, with its heavy, cast-iron-look base and wipe-clean stainless seat, is meant to look like it was salvaged from an old soda-fountain counter. Bet you can't guess what that seat is!! It's a (real-life) bathroom drain plug, the "pop-up stopper" on your sink. Complete with the rubber gasket running around the side that would normally make a good seal on your sink's drain.Ours had broken a few days before I was working on this section of the shop, and after we had a new one put in, I looked at the broken old one... ...and of course I couldn't throw that might-be-useful-someday piece out... ... luckily, someday didn't have to wait long. Miniaturists can be such awful hoarders!! -

Just look at those cute drop-side cribs!!! There are 3 brass beds like the one shown (plus another Hello Dolly brass bed). School desk, wash stand (probably going into the Willowcrest, after I chinoiserize it), a full bathroom (only the tub is shown) and then the painted dressing table on the left (I have two of those, plus more matching drawer chests). I also have a full Hello Dolly kitchen set (not pictured). Not shown, but there's also a half-scale bunk bed - I don't know what I'm going to do with it, it is way too small for my houses.© Lene Pieters

From the album: Various Miniatures
My treasures arrived! A lot of the boxes are dusty, have rat teeth marks and smell of decades-long storage in a garage. All the pieces are in great condition, except a few spigots that came loose from age. This group is mostly the fancier pieces. I just LOVE the huge breakfront - that is going into the Hattery. The two display cabinets are great too, as is the fireplace. There are 2 sewing machines for my fabric shop. The organ pencil sharpener on the right will probably be steampunked into something else. The book blocks are a bit plain, might fancy them up a bit.© Lene Pieters

From the album: CNC
I finally designed a piece of furniture in the CNC & Sketchup software that actually cut & routed accurately enough to fit together! Lots of trial & error. I got some 1/8" baltic birch plywood for about $1/sq' - I probably won't be using it for furniture anymore as it requires a bit of sanding, instead maybe use it for dollhouses/roomboxes. For furniture or smaller items - poplar will work, but cherry is even better. I have an old cherry table-top I need to slice up into thin stock.© MP2014

From the album: Various Miniatures
In 1986 I went on a school tour and we visited a museum somewhere in South Africa either in Pretoria or Pietermaritzburg (South Africa). I photographed this display with my little Kodak Flip Open camera I got in 1982, so the image quality wasn't very good. This little set of furniture made such an impression on me. I don't have any more info on the furniture itself, but the items next to it were clothing from about the early to mid 1800's. I assume the furniture dates from the same time. These were also for the very rich people in South Africa only, and you can see that they were well looked after. I wonder what little girl played with them?© Lene Pieters

Placing my new furniture in the Lily to see how they want to be arranged. This will help me choose all the paint colours! Sectional sofa set in black & beige stripes; cream kitchen and dining set; walnut bedroom set with 4 cabinets and a mirror.© Lene Pieters

I have a few House of Miniature kits I am starting to put together. I have never put any of these together and have some questions. Do you stain them before or after gluing them together? Do you use regular carpenters glue? I want a nice smooth surface, so I will be sanding before staining, and sanding between finish coats.

Hello All, I have a mini project book that calls for obechi sheet wood. It is a british book, so I suppose this is a british term for something like balsa or bass wood. Does anyone know what we call this in the US? Thanks, Molly

Hi, all! My Gloucester kit arrived today. My first dollhouse! I was leaving home just as the UPS fellow walked uo... fortuitous that I'd not left 30 seconds earlier, or it would have sat in the rain all afternoon! To warm up for starting to build it this weekend, I'm starting the GL bedroom kit. Wondering what people more knowledgeable than I (i.e everyone) have used in place of the cardstock mirrors that come with the lit. Are real mirrors the only option? It might be hard to find the right size and I'm not super-psyched to start cutting my own glass. Also, I'd love to see what folks have done with this kit... I searched the gallery but didn't find a lot.

The back view: This dollhouse is so roomy inside!! I can't wait to restore it!! Right now it is covered with a thick layer of dust from storage. -

the dollhouse is larger than I thought but it is beautiful. It is at least 40 years old. -
From the album: My First Dollhouse!
I used The New Doll's House by Venus and Martin Dodge for the patterns. I reduced the sofa down to loveseat size, decreased the height and added wooden beads for feet. -

The bed pattern came from The New Doll's House by Venus and Martin Dodge. I added a little crocheted pillow. -
From the album: My First Dollhouse!
The bed pattern came from The New Doll's House by Venus and Martin Dodge. I changed it a bit by eliminating the posts in the head and footboards and instead of the feet they showed I cut doll clothespins in half. I glued 3 layers of scalloped lace to the underside for a dust ruffle. For the mattress I used thick fun foam covered with thin quilt batting. -
I need some suggestions. I am looking for wood for scratch building furniture. There are plenty of outlets in the area for cheap basswood and balsa, but I am looking for more exotic woods (walnut, mahogany, etc.). There are a couple of woodworking stores in the city that I use, but I am looking for less expensive outlets. Where do you get your wood? Even if it is online and I need to buy in bulk, I am okay with that. Thanks!

Quarter Scale Cottage Furniture -- Arkoma, OK August, 2012
Gonzo posted a gallery image in Members' Gallery
From the album: My Travel Finds
This was a special find. In this gallery I mention a Farmhouse kit that I bought in Oklahoma. I found this bag of furniture in the tote with the FH pieces a few weeks after I got home. It is from Debbie Young at "Young at Heart." I couldn't find this set when I searched her site, so I sent a quick email. This was a special kit that was part of the 2005 national convention. There were only 300 made. She didn't specify, but I think it was part of a workshop. At the time it was valued at about $85. Not a bad find as part of a $40 DC Farmhouse kit! I dug deeper to see if the cottage was in the tote, but I am not THAT lucky. -
I just wanted to share a interesting find with you folks, maybe someone has seen this before but I thought I would share. I will just copy my blog info here: _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ More minis..with potential I just went perusing the local craft store Michaels after seeing they had 70-80% off things in bins I found this neat little thing. It is a puzzle set, but it is also miniature furniture. The quality of the wood items are quite good they are eaisly removable and..the best part the entire set was 5 bucks. Now mind you it would have to be sanded and the tabs removed.. but they seem to have a great deal of potential, they look very story book, which I like *wink*. I thought I would share this find with you fine mini fiends..er friends while I dont think it is in any particluar scale I found the storybook / cottage detail very promising. And again this entire set was 5 bucks. Jane

Well, I'm probably late to the party on this one but, have you seen this site? http://sketchchair.cc/ I am beside myself with glee and waiting with baited breath for these folks to launch their program. I have so many ideas and such poor skills on the saw! This would be so cool.

The bed is made with popsicle sticks 2mm thick and 5mm wide (after cutting). Amounts in wood 3 mm thick 5mm wide. The bars are matches. I had a light oak veneer. Finally, the bed measures 7 cm wide x 8cm depth x 4cm high.© Elisabeth Vivian - 2012
