This is a somewhat silly question, but I've had problems finding realistic fake grass turf, and I noticed some very nice ones in photos on this forum and online. Currently what I use is either flat grass sheets, which look way too uniform in colour and shape, or paint a layer of green and brown with Folk Art dimensional "Moss" paint and some acrylics. The effect is pretty realistic, but where do people get those cute fake moss turfs from? I've also been using treated reindeer moss as bushes. Will they dry out and turn brown? If anyone has experimented with making ponds, I would be very interested to know how they did it. I made my 'water' with clear resin mixed with green, but I'm keen to make them more realistic and natural looking. Thanks in advance.

I used a set of Darice LED fairy lights. The battery pack just happened to look kind of like an electric box so I went with it. I added the rust, cabochon with printed meter face, then ran the wiring through a plastic straw and up inside the shed. -
Condo Garden -- it isn't just containers any more

I miss my big gardens in Missouri but not the grunt work necessary for building and maintaining beautiful blooms. I thought that when we moved to the condo permanently, I'd be happy container gardening. I wasn't happy, though. I needed to get down and dirty. So last week I borrowed a shovel and dug in the front yard. We're lucky enough to live on the ground floor. Well, not exactly lucky -- we planned it that way to avoid stairs in our golden years. One of the bushes from the original landscaping died long before we moved in, leaving a lovely open spot right in front of our place. It was just crying to be planted, and it's not so big as to be unmanageable. I blogged the front yard transformation despite aching muscles from the unaccustomed exercise and heavy lifting -- bags of stones, garden soil, mulch. See it here. The back porch is paved but gets more sun. It's next. Am thinking to try tomatoes in containers, and Lloyd is itching to get a cactus garden going. He had to leave all of his cactus friends behind when we moved, poor soul, and he misses them. We need to track down a used baker's rack, I think, but the idea for this area hasn't yet jelled. -

I've been thinking lately about going half scale but I feel like I would probably not be all that into doing the interiors at that scale. When it comes to 1" scale dollhouses on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being enjoying interiors more and 10 being exteriors I'm at about a 6. I enjoy doing the exterior work slightly more than the interiors. ANYWAY I was thinking about doing half scale houses just exterior only and sealing off the back and putting them in the garden. Maybe lighting them with dollar store solar lights. I would have to seal them with marine varnish or something to keep them from deteriorating. I know half scale houses are the same size as the largest model train buildings which are specifically for garden railroads but I love a lot of the dollhouse styles available I think they would look great in the garden sitting on some single paving stones as a foundation. Thoughts? Opinions? Prior Experiences?

Mosaic pieces are an assortment of polymer clay and the, "grout", is a light/soft polymer clay. Some of the color was done with water color pencils, and the tops of these have been glazed over with translucent liquid polymer clay for a more finished look. I wanted to keep this build quite small so there was a limited space for gardening but these hollyhocks were perfect for the idea I had in my head of an old cottage garden. They are from WAM Miniaturen. The rest of the garden is made up of bits and bobs from the supplies box.© Jo Medvenics 2012

If you have a Garden Ridge store near you, they have some great decorative boxes on sale. The entire store currently 75% off of anything with a red line through the bar code. While looking through all of the great stuff, I ended up in an aisle full of hat boxes and other decorative boxes. Many of them are on clearance (they might have a ding or two). Here are the ones I picked up for later use. The most I spent was $10 on the "treasure chest" looking box. Anyone who likes half scale or quarter scale could do a lot with these. There are only 47 stores in the Midwest and Southeast, but if you have one near you go get a bargain. I only bought three boxes and tried to show them opened and closed. They just didn't post in order.
