It wasn't easy growing up bad. He couldn't help it - he was just born that way. No matter how many times he tried to be nice just to fit in, it never felt right. In fact, he was never happier than when he could make the other animals tremble in fear. It was such a rush! He especially liked picking on the three pig brothers. Little squealers - always trying to be nice to him. He couldn't stand it!Growing up, he'd gotten warning after warning from everyone telling him his behavior would lead to big trouble. He ignored them. How could any trouble come to him? He towered over every other living thing! He could squash them like bugs if he wanted to. He WAS the TROUBLE.His greatest accomplishment was his ability to fill his enormous lungs with air and blow nearly everything to smithereens. He practiced every day, and soon he could blow down fences, trees and even farm wagons! Any pip squeak who got in his way got blown down hard! Everyone was afraid of him, and he loved it!Eventually, like all bullies who refuse to change, he did get into trouble. He began blowing down straw and wooden houses in the village. Everyone was terrified! Who would be next? After two of the nicest pigs had their dream homes blown down, the sheriff decided enough was enough! It took eight strong bears to do the job, but they finally put the Big Bad Wolf in jail, No matter how hard he huffed and puffed, those concrete walls and iron bars were never coming down.What will happen to the Big Bad Wolf? The sugar shack is at full capacity, boiling sap down into maple syrup. The shop is open for business, and from the looks of things, business is good this year. With this slightly extreme lighting, you can see the old cauldron the family no longer uses for sugaring, still perched expectantly on its swing-out "crane" inside the enormous old fireplace, along with all the tools and trappings of a modern small-scale maple sugar house. Real life is messy. Snow is rarely snow-white. So here, leaves, trudged-up dirt, ice melt, and wood chips are scattered among the snowflakes on the ground... but up on the roof, as James taylor would say, it's as peaceful as can be. -

Everybody's got have to have a place they don't always clean up for visitors! Looks like this is where the Aucoins have left their just-chopped wood, not all of it stacked yet, along with a couple of sap buckets and various other clutter. -

This snowman was purchased from my local minis shop several years ago, for a different scene, but he asked if he could be part of Thorny Rock this year and I didn't have the heart to say no! With his scarf and red earmuffs keeping him warm, he looks pretty happy in front of Érablière Aucoin. He's one of the very few purchased items in the whole scene—there are a few others, including the shovel and wheelbarrow behind the snowman, but almost everything you've seen in all these pix has been made by me. -

The weathervane which sits atop the sugar shack's vented cupola was fashioned from a silver-plate maple-leaf pin that I bought at a garage sale (finely soldered-on pin removed, and back smoothed—with great difficulty!), a couple of different types of florists' wire, a tiny hose I kept for years "just in case" I might find a need for it, and some jewelry findings. And a lot of patience. Like all mini projects, I thought this one would take about an hour, and it took about three. It works, by the way. I don't think the wind would really turn it, because it's so tiny, but a hand or big puff of breath can. -

Sitting out in the picnic area while there's still snow all around might seem a bit crazy, but for the hearty souls who love visiting sugar shacks and sampling their wares, it can be one of the special treats of sugaring season. -

At the other end of the taffy trough, the shutters are open to the cash wrap area inside, so visitors can purchase their taffy and grab a paper plate, a napkin, or even a few more goodies purchased inside. -

Sorry for that interruption! Back to fooling the eye. A smallish pot is used to dip into boiled-down maple syrup, at the soft-ball stage, and pour into onto fresh snow, weather permitting, for fresh maple taffy. Sometimes popsicle sticks are laid on the snow before pouring to make grabbing and eating the candy a little less messy, as you can see at the left-hand side of this photo. The resulting chewy, sticky candy can be pulled, stretched, or simply gobbled right away, according to one's taste, almost the minute it has hit that cold snow. Yum! -

A shot of the photo shoot's setup, which completely wrecks the illusion. Note for other mini-photogs: Many of you probably know this already, but it bears repeating. Even with a zillion lights—most, but not all visible here—I still needed more. (Or it's time for a new camera, which I don't think is the answer...) I got much more blur than I like on this shoot, and really good lighting should fix that. If I lived in a house, instead of an apartment, I'd always do important photo shoots outdoors, because the sun beats any indoor setup, but it's not very practical in our current living arrangements—so the rest of the house goes dark for a day! -
