From the album: Ktchen (Room Box)
The nesting boxes came with a very heavy acrylic lid which I tossed out. Plan to attach a thin piece of acrylic over the top to keep out dust. -

I painted the cabinets since they were made out of bits and pieces of different woods. The stove range is a plastic dental floss container glued to bottom of cabinet. Coffee maker is made out of bits and pieces. Coffee pot is a bead with applied handle. Painted the wood sink silver. Used scrapbook paper for "stainless steel" countertop and decorative backsplash and wallpaper. Faucet is piece of bendable plastic used to hold things in place in packaging. -

Three things came together for the creation of this mini: 1) My DH was renovating our RL kitchen. 2) Went to Seattle Dollhouse and Miniature Show 2013 where I saw a big, beautiful and very impressive house (nothing like my kitchen) with exposed studs, wiring and plumbing in the kitchen. 3) I had just bought two nesting acrylic boxes from a thrift store. -

Today's work was to get the Shabby Chic dollhouse kitchen up and running. This picture is after I've put up the second wall of wainscotting (popsicle sticks and moulding)© The Dollhouse Whisperer

The kitchen area really comes in handy when I want to cook something or brew coffee while crafting. -

I love to work at the kitchen table while checking out the deer and pheasants and turkeys that visit the back meadow. The table was rescued and re-purposed as my yarn work area. -

Figuring out placement in this tiny kitchen is tricky. -
I've had a few days of just observing my Lily and she really doesn't want to have her entrance and kitchen closing off a large part of the downstairs area. So I've looked at some passthrough/hole-in-the-wall ideas on Pinterest. I like the idea of copying the rounded tops of the doorways and remove the entire back section of the kitchen wall. I have low cabinet and low stove in front of it, so don't need to cut more lower down. I will also cut about half an inch from the edge (or more, to keep its strength). Or perhaps just a single opening half the width of the space would be enough? So the stove would have some wall behind it to mount the utensil rack. My main concern is this: if I cut it out and then try and wrestle the section in position in the house - will it be fragile and break? If I cut it after gluing in position - how on earth will I manage that? After the cut, I suppose I could cut some artist board into matching frames (like the door frames) to give it a nice finish. Have any of you done something similar and could you share some advice please? Oh my goodness, this Lily is a very sassy young lady!

Amy inspected the party goods before the guests arrived. Grandpa promised the girls he would tell some of his ghost stories to their friends, although Grandpa himself thinks that nothing is scarier than a house full of little girls chatting away all night. -

Grandma set out some party samples for the girls before their guests arrived. The pie was for Grandpa so he wouldn't dabble too much in the girls' party snacks. -

After the girls are in bed, Grandma and Grandpa like to play some games of their own. Here they are playing with the girls' Ouija board. Grandma is laughing because the Ouija board told them to give their granddaughters dollhouses for Christmas. Grandpa said if the Ouija board says so, then who is he to argue. - Grandpa will do anything for the girls. Also, he doesn't want to take any chances by making the spirits angry. -

While the little girls are in the upstairs quarters partaking in refreshments, Grandma and Grandpa will enjoy a cup of tea downstairs. Grandpa is pouring a cup of tea for Grandma, who is waiting for him in the dining room. Grandpa knows how to treat a lady. The kitchen is now complete with curtains. Fala has a new basket to sleep in, although his dog dish still contains the name of the family's previous dog. If you look closely at the kitchen table, you will notice that not all four chairs match. In each of my kitchen sets, I broke a chair, so I used two sets of two and found that made a nice country look. - If you look closer yet, you can see that Heather and Holly have cups with their name on it. The rest of the family has yet to find a personalized mug.- 2 comments

This is a more updated picture of the kitchen. I moved the ironing board out from behind the staircase to make room for the bread bin, which was moved to accommodate the cabinet next to the stove. -

As the oldest girl, Amy likes to set a good example for her sisters by showing initiative and taking responsibility. Grandma realizes that and lets her help with the laundry every now and then. Amy should really teach Carrie to put away toys after she is done playing with them. If you look to the right, you will see that Carrie left Mickey Mouse lying on the dining room floor. Carrie wants Amy to iron her skirt next. -

When I was visiting Franklin D. Roosevelt's home in Hyde Park, I bought a resin replica of Fala, the President's famous dog, in the gift shop. Fala is the family pet, although his eating dish (not seen in this picture) says "Missy." Missey was my dog, a beloved toy poodle, and while we spelled her name with an "e," I couldn't help buying the dish when I saw it. Fala's favorite room is the kitchen, and when the dish is filled, he doesn't care whose name is on it. I had the rocking chair since I was a child, and it used to be on a shelf in my room. I have a matching rocker on the porch. -

Kitchen is done, more or less. I will add final details later. I think it looks pretty good for being put together from 3 different sets of random stuff. -

Potential kitchen layout. Stove and sink on right side of kitchen. Or should it be fridge and sink? -

This is a close-up of the Kitchen. The walls are scrapbooking paper, except for the door which is painted bass wood. The floor was made by cutting baked Polymer clay sheets into tile pieces that I glued to graph paper and sealed with polyurethane. With the exception of the tea kettle, everything in this photo was hand made out of some of the following; Egg cartons Popsicle sticks Bass/balsa wood Various papers/cardboard Polymer clay Plastic bottle tops Pipe cleaners Craft foam Aluminum wire Rocks/sticks from outside Beads Fabric Glass mosaic pieces Acrylic paint Polycrylic Read about the whole project and see more photos on my blog; http://kyle-lefort.blogspot.com/2013/05/undersized-urbanite-entry-steampunk.html© Kyle Lefort 2013

This is a close-up of a counter unit and industrial spring stools, found in the Kitchen. The mosaic portion of the counter top swivels away from the wall to create extra bar/table space for guests. And with the industrial spring bar stools, everyone gets a place t sit...and bounce. The main counter is a mix of balsa wood Popsicle sticks, string, paper, craft foam, acrylic paint, aluminum wire, and rocks (weight to anchor the mosaic section). The portion that swivels is made from real glass mosaic pieces, grouted with a mix of craft foam, Polycrylic, and black paint. The industrial springs are really pipe-cleaners, sealed, painted, and then sealed/painted 2-3 more times after that (They really are springy). The seat portions are plastic bottle tops, stretched out cotton balls, and cotton fabric.
