Painting over the fireplace, old cauldron hanging on a fireplace crane inside the huge stone fireplace (barely visible—it's dark in the fireplace!), antique saws hanging on the walls and all... but still it needs more...-

Lot of details being added. Hanging over the spigot of the evaporator you see a bucket of syrup, as if one of the Aucoins has just pulled a small amount to check for quality.-

Beginning to get all the furnishings and accessories into place. In this overhead shot of the sugar shack, the "working" half of the two main buildings, the evaporator can be seen, now with maple sap in both sections, slowly boiling down into syrup. The faux syrup is stained-glass paint, which when dry, is shiny like a liquid, and translucent enough to let all the faux painting on the sides and bottom of the evaporator show through, just as hot sap on its way to becoming syrup really might.-

View of the unit from above, before "maple syrup" has been added to it; lots of faux wear and tear painted into both sections.-

A shot of the entire evaporator, before sides and doors are put on the lower front "stove" area. The piece is made entirely of wood, which has been painted with stainless steel enamel and then faux-painted with all the lovely drips and rust and wear that a unit in constant use for many years would have.-

The centerpiece of any maple sugaring operation is the evaporator, the modern equivalent of a big cast-iron cauldron over a fire for boiling sap down into maple syrup. Traditionalists still use wood fires to power their evaporators, and the Aucoins' miniature version is one of these wood-fired pieces. In this photo, before the sides and doors were put onto the "stove" area, you can see the top section where logs are placed and the fire is constantly maintained during the sugaring process, and the lower section from which ash can be removed.
