  1. I've just begun the Magnolia and been away from building dollhouses for some time. I haven't got a clue if I have done it right but it seems to me from the exterior, once the sashes are installed there will be a part of the actual wall showing so I painted that the same color as the trim of the windows. Should I have done that? I know I've done these windows on another dollhouse (the Orchid??) but I can't picture it in my mind. Any help or pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  2. Hello Everyone! I recently acquired not 1, but 2, Magnolia Dollhouse kits from Corona Concepts. My parents found the boxes tucked in the back of a closet when they moved into a new apartment. When they pulled the boxes out and realized what they were, I got really excited, because I love building dollhouses, and the Magnolia was one that I always toyed with buying. It was like Christmas in July! However, it looks like I’m missing pieces, that I will either need to build myself or reorder. I already know that I’m missing 24 of the 32 window sashes that I need. Let the building challenge begin!
  3. From the album: Downsizing the Magnolia

Enclosed the porch of half a Magnolia to create space for bathroom. The porch roof is removable for access to bathroom.
  4. From the album: Downsizing the Magnolia

Creating smaller footprint house out of half of 1:12 scale Magnolia. Using bits and pieces of wood from my stash to make modifications. Creating a bathroom on a portion of the porch. Will hinge the porch roof for access to room.
  5. Hello. My name is Jaimie; I received a Magnolia for Christmas! Many moons ago I painted, shingled and decorated a wood finished dollhouse but this is taking it to a whole new level. I'm excited; looking forward to scanning the forums to see what tips I can get. Thanks, all!

Finally sanded the recesses for the hinges on the front balcony doors. Then had a nerve-wracking 25 minutes trying to assemble everything with epoxy glue, poking holes to insert the screws and make sure everything is positioned correctly to dry properly. The glue said 30 minutes' working time - ha, they lied! Airconditioning made it dry out much quicker, by the end I had glue all over my fingers, I was in such a hurry to get everything done. A pity the chocolate box holding the wall stable is empty.....

  7. Well, the story of my life is often summed up with "a day late and a dollar short," so today was an anomaly: I have had a bag of clothes to bring to Good Will for 2 months. Today, I decided to finish cleaning out stuff and ended up with even more bags & boxes to bring over. When I arrived, a man with a pick-up was unloading a lot of things - and - (drum roll) - as I stopped the car behind him HE HAD A MAGNOLIA KIT!!!!! :tongue4: Long story short, he GAVE me the kit. The box had some water damage and there is a slight stain on the corner of one board, but other than that, it looks fine. How about that for timing? :woohoo:
  8. I am FINALLY at an interesting point in the build. I'm getting ready to do the French Doors for both balconies upstairs. The door frame consists of a cut-out rectangle of wood with the plastic window insert. I am going to try and hinge them with some chamois leather. Since there are different thicknesses involved, I am not sure which slot on which side of the house walls needs to have the chamois insert to finish them. Walls: Trim / Wall / Trim = 3 eighths of an inch total Door: Frame / plastic / Frame 2 eights of an inch (one quarter). So there are 3 thicknesses in the house wall and only 2 in the door. If I insert the chamois in between the OUTSIDE trim and the house wall, the doors will be flush with the outside of the house (and recessed on the inside). If I insert the chamois in between the INSIDE trim and the house wall, the doors will be recesses on the outside and flush with the inside walls. Which method did any of you use (even with another build) and which one looks better? I've never had a house with doors like that so I don't have a clue. Any advice is most welcome!!!

This is a mock-up of the positioning. Did I do it right? Am a bit nervous gluing this lot together.

Had to create a pattern for the foyer section (and cut it from a second sheet of flooring paper because the Maggie has such a big living room area). See how the foyer extends slightly beyond the stairs to the left - in line with the door trim (which still needs to be mounted).

  12. Since the kitchen and coffee/book shop is moving downstairs, I now have a flooring dilemma. If I put the green mosaic floor in the kitchen area - where does it stop in relation to the front door? The kitchen side of the front door does not line up with the staircase to make a proper delineation between the foyer floor and the kitchen floor. The living room partial wall to the right of the front door, also does not line up with any part of the staircase section. All in all, there is a very awkwardly shaped area that is just giving my OCD nightmares! Can anyone who has built a Magnolia, please give me some suggestions? How do I join to different floor types together? Do I put a little bit of wood trim to indicate the join or do I just glue them to touch really well and hope there are no gaps showing? I really like the mosaic floor for the kitchen and have no idea how to accomplish this without it looking very asymmetrical and weird.

I also cut the doorway into the lighthouse panel. To the right of the doorway, is the next panel's angled join and to the right of THAT, is the new triangular piece of wood to fill in the gap in the front wall. Now I can start gluing, spackling and painting the extension pieces to the Maggie. The lighthouse is going to remain a separate piece to make it easy to move it around.

I cut the long triangular section to extend the front wall at the same angle towards the LH sloped wall. Then I cut a small triangle to rest on top of it, extending the porch floor into that new corner.

These are the outside paint colours: Blue Mist, but it is actually a sea green, on the walls and Midnight Green on the decks. Inspired by Deb's gorgeous Magnolia in all the gray/greens.

    Kitchen Floor

    From the album: Eternity Point

I reduced the green mosaic paper by to one quarter size. The scale looks much better. I've cut out large rectangle floor tiles, it adds some interest to the mosaics. If I join them directly, some pieces won't have "grout" in between and it just looks silly. The white furniture isn't final - the fridge is too high to fit anywhere due to the sloping roof. Maybe an ice box is a better idea. I like the green Aga stove, possibly with oak furniture. The front of the room will be the dining area.

  17. From the album: Eternity Point

This fits the entire upstairs kitchen/dining area, but I'm not sure if the scale is too big. Comments?

  18. From the album: Eternity Point

This is the proposed wallpaper for the downstairs coffee shop, book shop and hobby shop. Still debating whether to use the same paper all over. The floor paper isn't large enough and will have to be joined somehow - suggestions are welcome!

  19. I'm at the point where Maggie needs the bottom floor covered. It is going to be too intense to cut out around the stair section, so I'm thinking of just covering the whole floor, then cutting out the slots and then sliding the whole stair unit into position. It seems to be wedged pretty tightly in between the two floors. Is there any reason to glue it down? Or am I going to mess up the stair rails and banisters that way?
  20. This morning, I introduced the Lighthouse and Magnolia to each other. They seemed to hit it off quite well and I've been humming Fiddler on the Roof songs all morning long hahahahahahahaha. I tried a few configurations and would really appreciate some advice from the bashers please? Option 1: LH joining on the left (against the blank wall). Pro - blank wall, I can add a door. Con: Roof alignment (sloping down towards the LH) means it may look a bit disjointed. Option 2: LH joining on the right, flush in the middle with the balcony. Pro - might flow better, cut window opening into a door. Con: lose one window, two side bay windows will look a bit out of place staring into blank walls and the two joining walls are not equal length to start with. Option 3: LH joining in the oh-so-conveniently cut gap, looks like they're conjoining already, hey? Pro: looks like it was meant to be, precise angles work better for my OCD. This leaves the balcony closed on one side. I can keep the main part of bay area with 2 adjoining windows. The roof might need adjusting somehow. Con: cannot really think of one! Do shout if you spot an obvious glitch please. Let me know, my heart is thumping a bit faster at all the possibilities already hehehehehehehe.

    Front Facade

    From the album: Eternity Point

The new join of the front facade. The porch roof will be finalised at a later stage, but for now, the only changes were to cut a sliver off the second floor roof to accommodate the sloping lighthouse walls.

  23. From the album: Eternity Point

The new interior view. I used the lighthouse door frame to show where the new connecting door will be cut into the lighthouse wall. It is on a sloped wall - this should be interesting to paint/wallpaper! To the right of the door, is an open sliver that will be filled with extra wood to close the room off.

  24. From the album: Eternity Point

The new join showing the center bay wall with a diagonal section cut out to fit flush against the lighthouse wall. The left bay window wall has disappeared. I am going to glue back the window pane sections to make this a solid wall instead of a window. The second floor balcony will not connect with the lighthouse. What a lot of measuring, cutting, filing, carving and sanding to get all the angles right!

    Floor Cutout

    From the album: Eternity Point

The first floor had a sliver cut out (one sixteenth less than a full inch) to allow the bottom of the lighthouse to slide into the Magnolia. This brings the second floor in line with the lighthouse wall, so no need to fill in anything.
