  1. Hello, I'm new to the doll house community but am very excited to join. My daughter gave me the Orchid doll house for Christmas. I have been eying it everyday since the wondering when I would have time to start. Well... the time is now. I got laid off from work and have decided to taken on this wonderful project. I plan to work on my doll house during the times that I'm not looking for work. I live in Oshkosh, WI with my oldest daughter and her huge German Shepherd , Lobo. I am at the pre- stage of building my house. I opened the box and read the warm up sheet. I about to head out to the hobby shop to get a glue gun and all the other supplies needed. I am setting up my work area in an unused room. I just can't tell you how pumped up I am to begin my project. I'm off to the hobby shop . I will keep you updated.
  2. I'm in the process of planning the Orchid. It's going to be another couple of weeks before I can open the box and begin the actual build. In the meantime, I'm reading over the instructions, have read the community Orchid blog at least three times, looked at numerous pictures and posts, etc. Building an Orchid seems to be a 'rite of passage' for miniature builders as almost everyone has built one or more. What is the appeal of this house? One thing I've looked at is the unusual space in the Gable where the porch floor raises the second floor, prohibiting easy furniture placement and good use of space. I think the bed nooks, reading, and so on are cute, but would still like the floor to be even. I'm not seeing any bashing where this is done. What are your thoughts? Also, once I start the building, is it appropriate to make progress remarks on this thread, or is that better on the Blog section?
  3. Hey all, There is a little notch at the top of the orchid stairs, but I can't find anywhere that this notch is supposed to fit into. Or does it? Thanks
  4. Hello, So a lil intro.I didn't know what to do for this Christmas with my nieces and nephew so I got bored on pinterest(my deadly enemy) and decided to make something for each kid using popsicles. Yay.. Not. For the smaller ones, they are getting a barn and stable with real toy tractor and horses. The older ones are just now old enough to enjoy things like dollhouses so I wanted to make them each a house. Things changed. My brother and his wife are planning for a divorce which I think Is great(if you met her, you'd be happy too) But It brought up an old issue. Me, personally, I don't like kids. Sorry If you feel offended. I do like kid toys and crafts and DIY stuff. The only thing I have wanted to do with my brother's kids since before birth is make them a dollhouse from a kit. My Sis in law is one of these people who uses her kids as leverage so I don't think they will be around next christmas or after which means, this is my one shot to do the dollhouse thing. I have no idea what i'm doing. I bought the orchid because it's small and hopefully means it's less complex but also, if I screw up or give up, I've only lost $30 instead of $200. So I accounted for all the pieces and read the instructions. The instructions actually say "Don't Panic." That's A forte to panicking in my book. So, do any of you have advice for me(dollhouse only plz) that would be wonderful
  5. Hello, my name is Sanna and I live in Finland, Europe. I have built (and already sold) one Orchid that I made "Shabby chic"styled. Now I'm waiting for my new eBay purchase, The Beacon Hill and I'm very exited to get to build it! I'm currently pondering color schemes and how to make a back "wall" for it to protect it from my cats. In the orchid I used clear plexiglass with hinges but the screws for the hinges were so long they came thru the plexiglass and the wall. And the cats tried to open the plexi by hitting it with their paws during the night so I'm thinking i might use some sot of wood to do the back opening wall...
  6. I took a good look at it last week, and took it all apart. Completely. Dry fit much better with everything going the right way. Pictures to follow...

    corner blocks

From the album: Little Gray Orchid, finishing touches

carved a design in heavy chipboard, can't see it here, but should show up after paint
  8. Okay it's later ... I just realized that I've reversed left and right walls . Which explains why the floor was backwards, because it wasn't : the whole house is backwards. I don't think this is the issue with some of the small problems that I've had. just with the bay window on the wrong side... not a problem, is it? Because I am not taking it apart !!! We can call it a personal touch on the orchid .
  9. The instructions call for hot glue for shingles and siding. Is this better than wood glue? Orchid on hold waiting recommendations.

    New Bed

    From the album: Debra's Orchid

Had to dress a new bed for my Orchid. I've had to make several things since hubby knocked it over (twice) and scattered, broke, or lost some of the pieces. I made to coverlet and put on the dust ruffle. Everything else was purchased either from online stores, talented Etsy artists, or auction sites. Dog bed was made by Brae.

    Back View

    From the album: Debra's Orchid

Full view of the decorated house. It is a work in progress and seems to have a life of its own - it keeps telling me it needs more in the way of accessories! And a doorknob. For some reason I can't find a doorknob that works. I guess I will know it when I see it.

    Reworked Hutch

    From the album: Debra's Orchid

Reworked the hutch, luckily none of the dishes were lost. They are a hand-painted set that came in an Ebay lot and they are perfect for this kitchen. I added more "stuff" since it looked a little bare. Looks like Edna is baking something... yummy!
  13. better sooner... realized I had reversed the second floor to that the stairwell was over the bay window. After debating several solutions, none of which looked very good, I decided to try to remove and reinstall it. Fortunately, turns out the wood glue was still a little soft and flexible, it came off with no damage. after scraping off the glue, it went back in with no problems. Yes, I did mark right and left sides, in the right place. Just not paying attention. Early lesson well learned.
  14. I have found several of these kits on Ebay and wondering how many use furniture kits or bash them or use them a patterns for other pieces. I purchased the Chippendale curved front chest, 5 drawer chest, lyre back chairs, chaise lounge, mirror (damaged, partly assembled when purchased) and the hall table. Only have completed the curved front chest. Made another chest using the top of the five drawer chest as a pattern to make a smaller one using mat board
  15. When I opened my new Orchid kit Wednesday, it had 2 of sheet #4 but no sheet #3. I called and was told the missing parts would be sent out that day, and today it arrived! Such prompt service! All excited again! Still sanding the first parts for the window casings and front door (which is on page 3), and priming. Progress is wonderful.
  16. I recently purchased the Greenleaf orchid dollouse kit and am baffled about the construction of the windows. This is my 5th dollhouse I have constructed but am having trouble with the window placement. There are 8 windows and the instructions say to place one window sash interior and one exterior. I cannot figure out the correct way to place them so they all have framing around them. Any help would be great. Thanks.
  17. Hi! I may have done this years ago, when I first registered, but I honestly don't remember. Just pretend we haven't met. ;) I have two school-age children that are growing to a stage where I can take up minis again. My biggest, probably lifelong, project is my bashed (improved?) Foxhall Manor. I bought it years ago at the HBS Outlet; assembled the shell, wired it, custom built a tower, cut new windows, made new rooms, and it has sat that way ever since. I've just started getting everything back out again. Because it has sat vacant for so long, I'm finding things that need to be redone as I go. It's frustrating, but a labor of love, I suppose. I also have in my mini 'hood: A San Franciscan from my childhood, that will one day be redone as a haunted house (the yellowing wallpaper is aged to perfection) An Orchid where Santa Claus and his elves work A modern garage, I think I built it from a Nutshell News article when I was in high school A fairy garden (the kind you have to remember to water) A hat shop that is part of the Street of Shops; the others are in progress, but it will eventually include a bakery While I had children underfoot, I took up portable, less fragile, projects, like knitting/crochet, and sewing. I am enjoying incorporating some of those things into miniature. In between waiting for paint to dry on my Foxhall, I've gotten out my FIMO, and have made some tiny mice for the kitchen (one of them is currently my profile pic.) Thanks for letting me join in!

  19. Thursday 5/21/15 I've completed the main gable over the front of the Orchid. I had a bit of an issue figuring out the alignment of the gable because I tend to invert things and of course I don't follow direction very well but I did get it to work out. I'm thinking of papering one attic room with newspapers, I found a free printie site with 1:12 scale newspapers and now I just need to find paper that will work as newsprint and print them out. I'm thinking of aging the paper with a weak tea solution. I'm not progressing fast, but I'm not in a huge hurry either. Just letting the house speak to me and tell me it's tale.
  20. I was able to get my Orchid unpacked yesterday at I started priming to the wood sheets. I was excited that the kit came with shingles, but that was until I saw them. These shingles are literally paper thin and when I took them out of the box they started splitting and crumbling. I'm beginning to think I will need to buy "aftermarket" shingles to get higher quality ones. Has anyone else experienced these paper thin shingles? Am I right in thinking that I will have to buy other shingles?
