Almost ready to go together. -

Decided to make my own trim for the windows & door. -

I didn't like the stairs that came with the kit , so I made my own out of basswood and stained them with gunstock. -

I used The New Doll's House by Venus and Martin Dodge for the patterns. I reduced the sofa down to loveseat size, decreased the height and added wooden beads for feet. -
Another shot of the front 'cause I'm so proud!

So I said I'd post shots from the inside and here they are. I used scrapbook paper from my stash and applied it with Yes glue. I was going for a country/shabby chic look. I found The New Doll's House, by Venus & Martin Dodge and have used their patterns to make a bed, sofa and arm chair. I made the bed first but didn't have the right size wood for the legs so I cut clothespins in half. Also, I didn't trust my ability to get all the posts in the head and footboard in straight so I modified that and made both one piece. After I put it in the house I realized just how little the Orchid is so instead of a full sofa I reduced the pattern and made a loveseat. I'm also going to use some Dollar Tree tables and chairs and Michael's hutches that I found. Pretty sure that I'll be taking out the stair railing and leaving the stairs out completely. This is really a teeny house when you start furnishing it.

Started painting it yellow. I am really excited about my color choices. I got the idea from a house someone was selling on Ebay. I will be using yellow, two shades of green and a burnt orange. Think it is going to look amazing. :o) I am not looking forward to wallpapering the gables. :o( Think that part will be very difficult. -

I got my stuff out to work on my house a bit more. Levi my cat decided he loved the house. I thought it was so cute until I noticed the bottom floor! I had to pry him out of the house. -

Did a lot of sanding. Then decided I need to get going otherwise my cat would figure out the top floor was a cool place to hang. Glued in the attic divider and the roof. Also spackled some of the bad spots on the wood. Sanded a lot of little pieces. -

This was my progress on my first night of working on it. I dry fit everything then glued this all together. Pretty happy with the progress. -

Tiny Orchid kitchen. The curtains are homemade, as is the rod. I'm not much for sewing, so I used liquid stitch. Messy but effective. The curtains are a bit long, but they work. I used a small brass rod from Hobby Lobby for the curtain rod, and a bead held with a head pin for each end. I might try tying those curtains back so they don't look so long... -
After waiting over a week it finally arrived! I work as a teacher so I didn't get to start working on it till 4 pm. I tried to get as much as I could done so i worked pretty hard for the next three hours. I started out by labeling everything in pencil. I know the instructions say to pop things out as you go but one of the things it wanted me to start with was the windows. I am not ready for that since I don't have any paint yet, so I popped those out and bagged them. I decided to bag all of sheets # 1-5 in baggies so i wouldnt lose anything. Hopefully I dont regret that later. I really want to get the sanding done before it gets too hot outside so I think I may focus on that tomorrow. Next, I sanded the first, second, front and two main side boards with three different grits. Then I dry fit it and glued it together. I used my level on my Iphone to make sure it was straight. I used tape to clamp all the sides. So far the only casualty seems to be my hobby knief as the tip is gone. Lol. I have a lot of sanding to get done and I need to do some more reading to find out what I should work on tomorrow. Very excited and I can't wait for tomorrow evening to get going on it again. The pictures I took are to big so perhaps I can figure out how to resize the images tomorrow. Is their anyone else just starting out on the Orchid right now? Would love to here from some others. Night! Meagan

I'm so happy with myself today. I finished the the exterior of my, first ever, dollhouse. I used leftover paints from our real house. I think it turned out cute. I created an album to document it. I'm going to start tackling the interior this week. I have some scrapbook papers picked out of my stash that I think are to scale and coordinate. A little bit anxious about starting it because I don't want to mess it up!

My meager kit-bashing attempt. The little kitchen seemed so... little and dark.- 6 comments

The bed pattern came from The New Doll's House by Venus and Martin Dodge. I changed it a bit by eliminating the posts in the head and footboards and instead of the feet they showed I cut doll clothespins in half. I glued 3 layers of scalloped lace to the underside for a dust ruffle. For the mattress I used thick fun foam covered with thin quilt batting. -

Hi all! Thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a stay-at-home wife of a great guy (been married 33 years this coming March) and mother to one adult son who lives on the other side of the state with our wonderful daughter in law. I've done just about any craft you could imagine over the years and thought I'd give dollhouses a go. I thought it would be a great outlet to use all those tools and supplies I've acquired throughout the years. I bought the Orchid and I'm really feeling overwhelmed! I just started trying to build it following the packaged instructions and felt like crying! I had no idea what it was saying. Then I decided I should look online and signed up for this forum. I'm so happy I did because I found the wonderful expanded instructions pdf. Now I can dry my tears and continue. I look forward to reading as many of your posts as I can and picking your brains when I can't find the information I'm looking for. Thanks in advance!
