  1. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

The sugar shack is at full capacity, boiling sap down into maple syrup. The shop is open for business, and from the looks of things, business is good this year. If you close your eyes for just a minute, you might even smell a hint of maple scent, hanging in the chilly air. Photo 4 of 4 used in the Creatin' Contest entry. Thanks for looking in!!
  2. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

When the goodies are arranged this seductively, what tiny visitor will be able to resist? Photo 3 of 4 used in the Creatin' Contest entry.
  3. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

With this slightly extreme lighting, you can see the old cauldron the family no longer uses for sugaring, still perched expectantly on its swing-out "crane" inside the enormous old fireplace, along with all the tools and trappings of a modern small-scale maple sugar house. Photo 2 of 4 used in the Creatin' Contest entry.
  4. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Well, I don't see any parking in the back, but I do see lots more evidence of a busy sugaring season for the family. Photo 1 of 4 used in the Creatin' Contest entry.
  5. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

The sign says there's additional parking in the rear, but I wonder if the Aucoins have had time to shovel or plow out back? From the looks of things, they've been very busy lately!
  6. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

What you might see if you'd just sat down at one of the picnic tables to enjoy your tasty maple treats. A nice atmosphere to give yourself a little snowy-day sugar rush!
  7. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

A good shot of the front straight-on. I love the way the "shop" addition feels so at home with the original contest kit.
  8. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Real life is messy. Snow is rarely snow-white. So here, leaves, trudged-up dirt, ice melt, and wood chips are scattered among the snowflakes on the ground... but up on the roof, as James taylor would say, it's as peaceful as can be.
  9. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Somehow it feels like we're coming in for a landing in this shot. Hope the helicopter doesn't touch down on a picnic table!
  10. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Not really trying to be avant-garde, just hoping to capture all the ways to view the scene. And my laundry basket.
  11. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

A wide view of the front of the scene. With a bit of the room showing in the background, oops!
  12. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Touches of red and orange, from the red tin roof to the smallest details, can almost warm up a snowy day!
  13. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

A shot of the photo shoot's setup, which completely wrecks the illusion. Note for other mini-photogs: Many of you probably know this already, but it bears repeating. Even with a zillion lights—most, but not all visible here—I still needed more. (Or it's time for a new camera, which I don't think is the answer...) I got much more blur than I like on this shoot, and really good lighting should fix that. If I lived in a house, instead of an apartment, I'd always do important photo shoots outdoors, because the sun beats any indoor setup, but it's not very practical in our current living arrangements—so the rest of the house goes dark for a day!
  14. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Peeking in the keyhole window at the roof peak, at the chimney and painting over the mantel inside.
  15. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

This shot provides a good view of the floor mats which save the Aucoins' feet on long working days, and a large, fresh bucket of syrup at the end of the mat, waiting to be made into candy.
  16. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Can you believe it! Regulations require an exit sign above the door, even though it's the only door in the shack—leaving precious little up to interpretation...
  17. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

With peekaboo views through the front door of the shack and the shutter-windows of the shop.
  18. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Wherein we realize that Kelly did not manage to cover up every bit of the (real) room in the background.
  19. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Crates are piled high with teas and other goodies, gift-wrapped boxes are here and there for visitors in a hurry for a memento to bring home, the shop's shelves are as full as can be, and I see a duckie for the littlest ones has sneaked his way into an old bowl full of toys on the floor. Good fun!
  20. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

The taffy-trough in front of the shop is full of cooling maple candy. I'm sure the little customers can hardly wait to pull theirs out of the snow!
  21. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Just moving the camera around the scene, once it was fully set up, always seems to reveal something new. Quite by accident, the snowman on the front lawn seems to be looking right up at us!
  22. From the album: 2014 HBS Creatin' Contest--Erabliere Aucoin, Sugar Shack and Shop

Shed, shack, shop, and outdoor shenery. ;) The snow all around the shop and picnic area has various levels of shoveling done, so some dirt showing through as people trudge around; leaves that have blown in; and wood chips and sawdust over by the back of the woodshed.
