  1. Veiled

    Dry fit

From the album: Half-scale RGT Colonial (first house!)

Here is what I'm thinking for the floor plan: Attic level: boys and girls bedrooms and jack-and-jill bathroom, bathroom with false door to "hall" which receives the stairs from the second floor. In reality, that's where I'll stash all my electrics since I'm using round wire and batteries rather than tape wire and a transformer. Second level: master suite with bedroom and office to left, bathroom to right, and stairwell passing through. There will be a landing in the foreground (currently covered with blue masking tape), and doors from the bedroom and bath will open onto this. To make it a truer "suite," there is a passage behind the stairwells (toward the front of the house and further from the camera) between the parents' bed and bath. Main level: Living room with lots of play space for kids to left, a rather compact kitchen to the right, and stairwell ascending away from the viewer between them. There is hall space toward the back of the house to enter the kitchen. I am debting placing a half bath beneath the stairwell, vs. having that space open to the kitchen or using it for a washer/dryer. Thoughts?
  2. Hello all, I just acquired a mostly-built RGT 1/2” scale East Side Townhouse. The seller included a bag of trim, which I haven’t looked at yet, but the house is all put together, window frames in, shingles applied, and exterior painted/finished. The main thing I want to do with the outside is to re-surface all the exterior walls with paperclay. At present there is paint on about half, and a stone paper applied to the rest. I have actually spent some time in New York brownstones (on the East Side, even!), and this isn’t what they look like. So, I have several questions to put out—I think I know what I want to do, but want to hear others’ opinions about methods and so on. I have found an excellent paperclay tutorial linked within posts on this forum. The natural color of brownstone varies—it is actually a type of sandstone—but would it be better to pre-color the paperclay medium before rolling it out, to a sort of baseline dark reddish-brown color, and then do color washes to achieve the variations? Or should the paperclay go on, get texturized, and dry, before any paint is applied? (And is ordinary acrylic paint the right thing to use?) As I said above, most trim has already gone on. With a thickness of 1/8” to the paperclay, will the trim (especially window frames) look too recessed? I have to look at some more photos to refresh my memory, but my recollection is that windows are set right into the blocks of stone in the NY brownstones. So this may be a moot point. I will now attempt to include a photo, but since I didn’t review the procedure before starting this post, bear with me!
  3. So I decided to start building my Newport today. I've had it for about a year or so. I got it off of ebay for about half the price =) It comes with a bunch of wallpaper as well which is a nice bonus. Got the first floor of the shell done. =) My nephew helped with the bay part as I have trouble with those darn pieces they fit into. They look the same to me =p ash

  5. I was considering buying the Queen anne from a shop that was assembled and had the outside completed already. I just wasn't sure if I would be able to reach into all the areas to complete the inside? Anyone have any idea? It would be a shame if I couldn't finish a room. Thanks Amanda
  6. While searching for dollhouse kits locally (which includes my entire state! Woah!) I found somebody selling this already built but (a little) damaged Foxhall Manor by Real Good Toys. The shingles are broken, but terrible so they are coming off. The conservatory was painted a bright yellow so I'm going to both tone It down with some white paint, and place a very high wainscotting trim on the room. On the room It looks like spilled white paint (or maybe? glue). There are broken stairs, rails in the Grand Hall. It looks like real sized carpet was used. All I can see however is The Potential: I've got this hand crafted doll by an I.G.M.A. Artist named Eliza and this is going to be her home. I'm thinking of painting the roof black and later shingling it. The house either a dusky lavender or a dusky rose pink. Black trim. Dark grey and deep cream for accent colors. Only Artisan pieces and furniture inside this home! I cannot wait to start collecting, but I first must finish some Layaways in 1:24 scale. Already an Artisan member here has offered me a stunning rug that will have the pride of place in one of the rooms. It's going to take years, but it will be beautiful when it's finished. It needs Help and LOVE! But it is only: $40! I'm stunned. Going to hopefully pick it up next week. My friend is going to be taking me over to get it. I know that it is HUGE (it comes with the Conservatory and the two-story addition, but the staircases are missing, plus the (looking at the front) left side front-opening door. I've measured my desk: it fits! But only a foot more in length is available to work. I'm cleaning up my Craft Room this week and getting ready to bring my find home hopefully next week. I'm so THRILLED! There are Members that find these incredible Dollhouses for incredible prices, but I NEVER dreamed that I could ever be one.
  7. Here is the front: The tan shingles & the exterior of the roof: The interior: The inside foyer with broken and various pieces:
  8. Next week I'm hoping my Big (Someday Soonish) Beauty will be home, and into my Craft Room ready for me to begin. First it will be sanding down that blue paint, taking a good primer to recover it or possibly a nice textured spray paint with the trim tapped off with some nice blue painting tape to protect the areas that I want to (for now) keep white. Then those shingles need to come off. Human sized carpeting is the next to go. Then some sanding that yellow Conservatory. A whitewash to help, and later tall wainscotting. Choosing between dusky lavender and a dusky rose pink for the main house exterior, and then planning which room is what for the interior. I'm going to need to contact Real Good Toys for the missing left front-opening door, as well as both staircases, the exterior trim pieces, and also the windows as well as doors. Decorating will be half the fun! I cannot wait to begin!
  9. Hello, I've been reading that a person should not sand before painting with at least a primer. But my half scale RGT Front-opening Country Victorian arrived so rough and I was getting splinters from handling it. Besides I heard that Brown paper can be used to sand a dollhouse and my kit arrived covered in the stuff. I thought it would be the best to kill two birds with one stone and I used the brown paper to sand it down. Some pieces are still a little tougher than I would have liked, but I just saw the recommendation that a person not sand until after painting a first coat. Did I ruin my kit? So concerned! Thank you!
  10. A miniature lady I know built me this custom house. Well, it's the RGT Queen Anne and the Newport bashed together with a ton of custom alterations. Walls taken down, windows replaced with doors, balconies extending all around, etc. I know there are a few weird things that don't match (especially the Newport side of roof needing to be peaked or something), but I love it. It's so fun. Just picked it up yesterday, so there are no accessories yet and I only just started playing with furniture, but here are pics if anyone is curious. It's giant!!! I realize it's bigger than most people's taste. Lol. It's 90x36x38. Oops. Will post pics in just a minute. Have to switch devices.
  11. Hey guys I decided to branch out and do the RGT Bungalow which I have wicked plans for ;) but, I don't now whether to decorate the interior in mid century modern or to do it in Mission style, or to just go traditional. The scene setting with be the early 1970's with the possibility that the family has never updated their furniture. So, I guess I'm asking, if you were to do this house, what style interior would you do? I'm not sure who created the bungalow in the photo but, that's the house, and I just love what they did to the exterior.
  12. Hello, I'm new to the dollhouse building world. I do have a few furniture and just bought a mini table saw for hobby building. I was going to complete a dollhouse that someone else started but decided to build my own. I purchased the RGT painted Lady and hope to build a house for my daughter that will be ready by Christmas hopefully. Here in El Paso all we have is Hobby Lobby so I will most likely be making some custom made pieces. I do get overwhelmed easily but I really want to finish this project.
  13. I just have to share this with you all: http://blog.realgoodtoys.com/2015/06/11/miniaturist-of-the-month-lawanda-swearengin/ Always nice when a fellow Greenleafer gets published somewhere.
  14. I recently started building the RGT half-inch scale bungalow. I've been looking through the forums and the galleries--great ideas! I am wondering how others have finished the porch floor. Did you leave it the bare wood, either painted or stained, or install flooring? I fear the posts won't fit if I put flooring on, but I can see it would be difficult to put on flooring after the posts and railings are in. Any ideas? It's the one bit of the house the instructions don't cover--when to finish the floor of the porch :-) Jennifer

    Box

    From the album: The Bungalow

I've already opened the box and had a look-see at the instructions. I took the door apart and stained it, and bought paint for the exterior. Now I just need to get the "wallpaper" I picked out, and I'll be all set!

My trim is China Blue, though it's really hard to tell that it's blue in the pics, lol. This is the first coat; I was going to do 2-3 coats, but... I kinda like the way it looks a bit weathered and wind-worn IRL with only one coat. (It doesn't come through as well in the pictures; trust me, it looks neat!)

    Newberg begins

    From the album: Duracraft Newberg

I cut a corner off the porch, i'm hoping with some changes to the entry I can make that odd little window make more sense. Paperclay stone work around the base, it will continue around the entire "basement". I added a faux casement window to try and pull the platform into the house and take away some of the dead space on the front of this house.

The little lighthouse lamp is a working lamp. It was made from some scraps and odds and ends.
