  1. From the album: Room Box

I decided to add a little lamp to the room box so It would serve 2 purposes. The roof was a DIY faux verdigris on cardboard. I really wanted to add chatskis on top of the cabinets, but I really want to start the Laurel!
  2. I've spent the last few weeks making an old fashioned kitchen roombox for my granddaughter for Xmas. I started by stripping a Town Square hutch, which was a real pain. It probably wouldn't have been so bad if the darn thing hadn't been painted black, which had seeped into the wood. I used an easy build roombox from Miniatures.com, but chose to leave the top and the acrylic front off. It's easier for play without the top. I also reinforced the walls to the base by gluing strips of wood along the outside where the walls are glued to the base. I made the hutch along the back wall. After I made the drawers I realized I had marked the drawer fronts 1/16th inch too narrow, so there's more of a gap than I intended. I wanted a slight gap to ensure that the drawers moved easily for a seven year old. I might remake the drawers if it continues to bother me. I forgot to glue the clock to the wall, but I'm thinking of adding a few more things. I needed to put everything into place so I'd know if I wanted to add anything else to make it look just right. I feel there should be a woodbox in the corner by the stove, then Em will learn that all stoves weren't always gas or electric. She will also learn that people used to keep ice boxes on porches or in back entry rooms, which is why there's none in the kitchen. Frankly, I didn't feel like jamming an ice box in there.
  3. I spent a lot of time at my grandparents when I was a child. After my grandpa's passing I wanted to create a room box of their kitchen, as this is where we spent most of our time. I can still remember my grandpa sitting at his special place at the table and my grandma slaving over the store making one of her many, delicious suppers! It took me years to complete the room box because of time restraints but I can happily say that I think I'm complete! I actually completed it just in time to showcase it at my grandma's funeral. It was a huge hit! Started w/the outside; Family pictures at my grandparent's over the years In progress- Photo of my Grandpa and niece at the kitchen table. Starting to looks so real! My grandpa taught me how to color so a coloring book and crayons on the table were a must! Walking into the kitchen; I always remembered the duck on the counter holding pens and bills, the family tree plaques and antlers above my grandpa's chair, some type of pie or baked good being prepped for baking on the counter, green Kool-Aid was always made in the waiting in the frig, my grandpa's inhailer always on the window sill by his chair at the table, the latest family photos stuck in the trim behind my Grandpa's chair, the rug that my Grandpa had to have under his feet when sitting at the table and the most important- cards on the table from the hundreds of crazy 8 games that were played! The retro metal sink and dumplings cooking on the stove (a family fav!) My grandparents only source of heat! This was also grandma's favorite way of cooking. Notice the huge burn mark on the floor- that was Grandma- she dropped the stove cover one day! Opps! Top view of the entire roombox My grandpa and his annual growing of his amaryllis. Notice it on the table! My grandparents! My Inspiration! Miss them dearly!
  4. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

The fridge, stove, pot rack, hanging baskets, and green wire shelf are all made from Hallmark ornaments. The fridge and stove are slightly out of scale (especially the fridge) so I scratch built cabinets to work with them. I also scratch built the butcher block island and shelf over the fridge. The table and benches are from a kit, as is the cabinet over the stove hood. The breadbox itself, I bought on clearance from my local miniature shop. It was raw wood and I stained it red and did all the finishing inside, including adding a false wall for the windows. It has a lid with a plexiglass-covered opening so you can see the setting even when the breadbox is closed. More details and progress pictures are on my blog.

  5. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

Here's the finished breadbox with the knob attached. I didn't like the knob that came with it so I got this replacement off Etsy. The silver design reminds me of snowflakes. (You can see a close-up here.)

  6. I finally found a room that inspired me to start building again! Local artist John Dowd's house in Provincetown. The photo is by photographer William Waldron & it was done for Elle Decor magazine. Where I'm at now: Floor, walls, & paneled stair wall constructed...nothing painted yet. I finished the bookshelf & tried my hand at making an oar - I shall try again click image to enlarge I need to tackle the staircase & landing next, & those shutters!
  7. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

My dad helped me electrify the stove and hood with screw-base bulbs attached to plugs. The bulbs can be replaced if they burn out. The plugs are plugged into sockets hidden behind the cabinet. There are more details on my blog.

  8. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

I scratch built the cabinets and farmhouse sink. There are step by step photos on my blog here, here, and here. The view out the windows is from a photo taken out my parents' front door in the Boston area after a blizzard.

There were also RL room displays in addition to factory equipment.
  10. From the album: Spr2015TripGermany

We just happened to visit the Deutsches Schuhmuseum in Hauenstein Germany when they had special exhibit,"Nostalgie im Museum".
  11. From the album: HoM Fireplace Roombox

Created 1:12 scale roombox in a wine box that sits on its side. Will put plexiglass in place of wooden slide-in lid. I do use double sided craft tape for attaching wallpaper. The double sided tape does not show through on the thicker scrapbook paper, but it does show through on the thin wallpaper sample. Will put more on this wall to break up the tape lines. I did trim one side of the marble top side table as I am using it for a desk and needed to slide a chair under. The House of Miniature kits are so much fun to put together, but after working mostly with half scale the pieces looked so huge at the start of this project. More accessories yet to be added.
  12. From the album: McKinley staircase roombox

Included special gifts and remembrances in this box. Also a great place to display the laser cut chandelier!
  13. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

I added this cookie jar after taking all the other pictures. This is also a Hallmark ornament. It's a tad large compared to the accessories around it, but I think it works tucked away in the corner.

  14. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

When I bought the roombox, the lid was falling apart and needed to be removed and glued back together. (Maybe that's why the roombox was on clearance!) I also replaced the plexiglass, which was scratched up, and my significant other helped me come up with a better way to hinge it. It's not quite finished -- I didn't like the knob it came with and am waiting for a replacement to come in the mail -- so I'll wait to post pictures of the whole roombox until the lid is finished. But for now, here's a teaser shot...

  15. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

The roombox is lit up with three fluorette bulbs hidden behind the "beam" at the top of the box, plus there's an outlet on the left wall (under the bench) and two on the right wall, hidden behind the cabinets.

  16. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

Since the room doesn't have a fireplace or a tree, I'm using the table as a shrine to Santa. The cookies and mug are a mini Hallmark ornament. The view out the window is from a photo of my parents' street after a snow storm. The hurricane lamp plugs into an outlet under one of the benches.

  17. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

The table and benches are made from a kit I got at a flea market for cheap. They're apparently based on plans published in an old Good Housekeeping magazine. The radiator, like the stool next to the stove, is mainly there to take up space since the angled lid leaves more room at the bottom of the wall than the top. The hurricane lamp plugs into an outlet under the bench by the wall. You can see it if you really twist your head to go looking for it, but at a glance it's well hidden.

  18. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

The wire shelf is made from another Hallmark ornament (a kitchen rack shaped like a Christmas tree). I made the cookbooks. More details on my blog. The wall over the table is too empty... I'm planning to cross stitch something holiday-themed to go there.

  19. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

I wanted to put another cabinet to the right of the stove, but with the lid closed there's very little space to do so. Since the lid closes at an angle, there's more room lower down than higher up, so the stool just fits.

  20. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

The stove hood is the metal one from Houseworks. To match the appliances and sink, I painted it then coated it with gloss varnish.

  21. From the album: Christmas Kitchen in a Breadbox

The gingerbread ingredients on the island and scattered around the kitchen came with a gingerbread prep table I bought off Etsy. The seller gave me the option to have them glued down or not, which is a good thing because the table that came with them turned out to be way too big for this setting.

  23. From the album: Miscellaneous Minis

This project was for the NAME Hallmark Ornament Contest 2014. The only rules are to use an unaltered Hallmark Ornament - and create any scene you want. I chose to use a house in an outdoor setting, inside a roombox.
