Sable
I'm having my 5th nose surgery tomorrow. My stomach is a nervous mess. I don't know why I'm so nervous, this should be so routine to me by now. I guess I'm just sick of it! Wear sunscreen so you never have to go through what I've been going through the past 4 months!
havanaholly
I don't think it ever gets routine. Let's hope this one does the trick.

You've been a great support through this, everyone has. One more after this. It's just such a cosmetic inconvenience, I'm so sick of wearing bandages on my nose to camouflage and cover the ongoing process to reconstruct it. KathieB
Sable, glad to hear you're nearing the end of your surgeries. The bandages must be a real nuisance in Florida's heat and humidity.

rodentraiser
I know this is a terrible thing to ask, Sable, but did they give you any options on how you wanted to look or did they just say this is it, take it or leave it? I'm just curious and you don't have to answer if you don't want to, of course. You can hit me - I'm morbid. havanaholly
Our evac plan is to hitch up the camper & head for Wetumpka. We are 87+ feet above the Styx River. When we had a goat-soaker storm a couple of years after moving in that dumped over 12" rain in a day there were only two houses that didn't even get water in the garage, and that was because the county has not properly ditched our roads for drainage. I use the present tense, because after that fiasco the county road folk came in & pent a fw days digging here & there, and they still apparently haven't figured out how to make water flow downhill. Kathie, I worry about you...
KathieB
1 hour ago, havanaholly said: Kathie, I worry about you... Not to worry, Holly. Here on the West Bank we're well above danger from river flooding. All of NOLA has a drainage problem. Streets flood when there's a heavy dew. We just wait for the water to go down. The rain has dissipated somewhat as the storm heads farther west than predicted. This morning's concern are tornado warnings, but they seem to be east of the city. Two already near Slidell and Bay St. Louis.
havanaholly
Glad to hear you're high, if not dry! Once the rain stops everyone here is gritting their teeth and waiting for the rivers to rise. Our biggest worry is that the bridge over the Styx is over 60 years old and there are several strainers and one big blockage between us & I-10 that can let go of large trees and send them slamming into the bridge, and we will have a 50-60 mile detour to get to Pensacola. The Perdido River's US90 bridge got replaced & raised when the new roadside park and boat ramps were built a couple of years ago.

rodentraiser
Sable, I just went back and read my post and I realized that that was a very insensitive question. I must have been under the influence of the two sleeping tablets I took, all the car exhaust from outside the window, or just plain brain dead (or all three). Take your pick. Anyway, I really want to apologize for what I asked and please just ignore that post.
pdlnpeabody
Sorry I've been quiet lately (maybe that's a good thing), RL has been crazy lately. I had to spend the first week of April getting a brain scan I was under worse surveillance than a death row inmate. 24/7 audio and video, no closed doors (I had to protest the "open door, always in view, restroom policy"). I was told they were worried I might fall. I pointed out that falling on the floor at zero miles an hour is hardly a concern. I was doing about 70 mph on my motorcycle to get to the test that same morning. Even worse, there wasn't a view out the window, only bars! Didn't matter anyway since I wasn't allowed out of bed without an escort. All the while I felt as good as it gets. After seven days, I had to call it quits. I had the same test about 22 years ago, so this time I came prepared- I brought a 30" x 40" illustration board for a new 2D art piece - my first in 16 years. I started a stipple of a 1940's locomotive during the hours of boredom that I was all too familiar with. It's far from finished, but I hope to put some time into it soon. I also brought supplies to build a couple of doors for the Tudor house, but they wouldn't let me work with any sharp tools. I had to get back to work and a few days before the test I had gotten a call from a single practitioner law firm - he wanted to hire me as his part-time paralegal. I started April 11th and it's been fairly simple work, but the attorney is a good guy and I could use the extra income. I did have to cut back to part time at the VA, but that is a dead end job anyway. I'm about to finish up RL house repairs in preparation of a 3 month visit from my in-laws. My kids have repeatedly flooded the bathroom and kitchen floors. Their bathroom reached a point where the subfloor became saturated and soft. I had to tear it up to the joists and replace it all. It's almost done. I also have corner trim to replace throughout the house. I also mowed the lawn for the first time in 6 weeks. It has been raining almost constantly here. Yesterday was the first sunshine I've seen in a while. In about a week we're taking a road trip to Texas to pick up the in-laws. We're thinking about stopping over in New Orleans for a night on the way back (July 6-7). We've been planning this trip for about 8 months, but not very well. We're going to wing some of it. Almost forgot- My DW has got the dh bug! She has picked out a modern representation of a traditional Pilipino house. There kind of like single story breadbox houses, only on 3-4 foot stilts. I already have the plywood cut for the base and some ideas as to how it will be built. We hope to start on it while her parents are here.

CheckMouse
Good to hear from you again, Jeremy! I think I mentioned somewhere along the line about my fall just before Mother's Day. Actually, I didn't "fall" - I stumbled and caught myself on one leg, with a bent and turned knee. Should have just gone splat! I gave it a few weeks to shape up and heal itself - didn't cooperate - and finally went limping to my doctor. After x-rays and an MRI (those things are HORRIBLE) the conclusion is that there is a lot of arthritis in that knee and a few other problems - and we're looking at knee replacement! Next month I start the busiest season of my job - the county fairs - so I certainly can't be laid up right now. Guess I'll try to carry on through October, and see how it goes. rodentraiser
Heya Jeremy! I am listening to the gulls screaming across the street (all our roofs are flat here and they're nesting) and I swear it sounds like The Birds. I'd be very happy if I never heard another gull again.
minikelli
I haven't mini'd as much as I'd have liked here the last few days -- lots of sunshine, but it's been paired up with what seems to have been a constant deluge! Which means typically I just pull my hair into a ponytail and try to avoid mirrors and seeing how my hair frizzes out everywhere. I wish at this point that was all I had to worry about, but unfortunately with the recent rain it's caused what was a small leak in my parents' roof to become a major leak and took down a pretty good sized portion of their bathroom ceiling. As I don't have the money to have all that's going to need repaired done, I bit the bullet and started a Go Fund Me account to try to help them raise the money they'll need. Was amazing to see the people that donated right off do so -- then of course I mentioned the possibility to my mom that a campaign like that may be a good way to get them the help they need(was thinking I could give her the link and she could share it herself)... instead she burst into tears asking me that I hadn't done anything like that and wouldn't b/c it would be like them "airing their dirty laundry". That is something I will never understand -- it's not "dirty laundry", in my eyes and I believe those that have already donated it's the simple matter they are older and in what is supposed to be their retirement home and need help. So now I'm basically in the position I'm hoping and praying the Go Fund Me campaign at least helps me raise more of the money needed to get their roof fixed, but I'm also having to try to keep it super secret so I don't upset my parents... I literally have felt very much like I was between the proverbial rock and hard place. I love my folks, but boy oh boy could I do without their pride. I know I've been foolish in my life and pride has been a bi portion of it, but I'd like to think I learned that at times you just have to be humble and ask for help. Right now in looking at their house, I truly think if they have a lot of snow this winter coming the roof will probably cave in, and I just can't see sitting back and letting that happen to them. Wish there was an easier way to come up with the funds they need(you know like a winning lottery ticket), but I've been very budget minded lately too so the likelihood of just wasting money on something like pure chance hasn't even been a possibility! lol Anyways, sorry for writing the book and just want to say it was nice to be able to read and catch up with some of you guys' daily lives and not just your minis! Hope you all are well, and Jeremy I hope that trip goes well and your wife's build goes incredibly!
havanaholly
Our parents' generation was among the last to be ingrained with the "do or die" ethic that refused "charity" as anathema.
rodentraiser
Holly, I still think most people today would do without charity for themselves (I'm an exception, I'll admit), but will definitely accept any help they can get if it's for their children or loved ones. I think the plan is to give me what I had. The bone structure was not affected nor were the nostrils by the Basel cell, only the skin on both sides and along the bridge. So, in theory, my passport picture won't need to be retaken since none of the 'points' are changing. Thanks for the question. It was a good one. minikelli
Holly, that is an incredibly valid point! I think where my biggest issue has been is I emptied out my 401K a few years back when they were facing issues with the inability to make their payments on the house. I was able to get that all caught up and make sure they were able to stay in it... but when I realized they were having the issues b/c they were basically being asked by my sister to make her rent payments for her and her husband -- when they both had full time jobs. That was rough for me to try and be understanding there. As it stands my sister and I unfortunately don't talk all that much as she was offended when I turned down helping her out, b/c I knew our parents needed the help, and I know her issue is she just doesn't like to live with-in her means. Thankfully, I believe my sister and brother-in-law have grown up a bit and taken better control there -- but my parents are aware that for all the help they've tried to give over the years, they'll never get any in return. Thus where it is I was going through my dollhouse kits, and finished smaller scale houses wondering just which minis/kits I'm willing to part with to try and raise the funds I know are going to be needed. Goodness knows my folks and I have butted heads and temperaments, and will inevitably do so again -- but they are my parents, and I'll do what I can to see that they live comfortably and try to not have to worry about their roof falling in on them. Sable, I'm with Holly in hoping they're done cutting on you -- and purely getting you back to looking like you with the skin grafts etc. I know that for myself, red haired with super white skin, I tend to avoid being out in the sun all that much due to how quickly I burn. However, in the same breath I've had some really severe burns before that I've no doubt will haunt me later on as I continue to age. Just want to say thank you to those of you whom have asked in regards to the campaign I started for my folks, as well as simply said a prayer -- it is all more appreciated than you will ever know! Roxxie2
Whoa Jeremy! Sounds like an adventure.....not so much huh? You have had a lot to deal with. I was in the hospital for an operation 2 weeks ago I know there is no privacy what so ever in a hospital. I closed the bathroom door I didn't ask! lol Glad you are getting back to RL. I had my first shopping trip to Santa Fe today with my friend. I haven't been out of this one mule town in months and months. I actually restrained myself in Hobby Lobby and only bought a few bottles of paint. Like I need more colors right? Have a good weekend, stay safe everyone! Kelli, I never had a great relationship with my Mom, but when push came to shove some 5/6years ago, we moved her into our home and we cared for her in some great times, not so great times and her worst moments...it was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life and she took her last breath, at 93 and 1/2 in my home peacefully and surrounded by her grandchildren and daughters. Through all that hell, I wouldn't of changed a single thing. God Bless you for helping your parents.
