One Thing You Won't Spend Your Money on. 7/9/08

Recommended Posts

What One Thing do you think is a total waste to spend money on? I have one friend who refuses to buy pictures for her house. She takes pictures and have them blown up and framed (Yeap she does that on her own too  ) I have another friend who won't buy make up (She uses samples only, I have NO idea where she get that many samples from). I personally refuse to buy sugar filled cereal. I just don't like it personally and I think it is too much sugar for kids.

What about you. What thing do you refuse to buy? :o

I refuse to spend my money on a lot of things. Haircuts for my kids. I went to hairdressing school and I know how to do it myself. Also on toys for my kids. They practically have Toys 'R' Us in our basement anyway thatthey do not need any more toys.

Lots of things. Don't do makeup, except for moisturizer (I don't know if that "counts" as make-up or not?) Never had a manicure or pedicure. Don't go to beauty salons for anything but a basic haircut. Don't buy breakfast cereal. Buy mostly "generic" goods from the grocery -- started doing this when I watched several different TV programs showing the canning of things like peas -- the ones going on THAT track get a label that is a brand...the ones on THIS track get a label that is the generic...same peas falling out of the same chute... and so on. Have never bought a lottery ticket, nor been in a casino (well -- unless you count the couple of times we've stopped at one on our way somewhere else, to fill up with gas in the car, and use their bathrooms!). Buy my clothes at a farm store rather than a department store (since I mainly wear jeans and t-shirts, anyway!)

I would never spend money on hairdressers, I've always done my own as well as the rest of my family. I also will never go to another casino, I can just as easily save myself the trip and throw my hundreds down the sewer on my way out the door. Twice I've been and trust me, it didn't take 2 minutes to lose $200. each time. That's a lesson learned.

hmmm... interesting topic. Let me think....

I can't push myself to spend money on REALLY expensive miniatures such as Bespaq. Even though I think some of the Bespaq stuff or artisan made stuff is GORGEOUS, i just cant push myself to spend that much money. I would much rather prefer to make high quality miniatures myself, or to find them at a super duper bargain price.

Also, i dont really like to spend money on anything that I can make myself, this applies mainly to miniatures, but also a few other things around the house.

Lets see--- what else.... I used to give myself a haircut cus I refused to pay for one that I didnt ever like anyways...

Oh, I refuse to pay TOP dollar for any dollhouse or dollhouse kit when you can usually luck out and find them for a bargain if you are patient and check ebay, craiglist, and other sites regularly...

Im sure there are other things but I just cant think of them right now....

I make my own dollhouse pictures. I do a lot of country decorating so I get Country Sampler magazine and cut out all their little signs, paste them on scap wood of rhe right size and seal them with water based varnish. Some are the same as I have full size in my house.

I don't gamble - so no lottery tickets.

I don't smoke - no cigarettes.

I don't drink - so no liquor.

I do use a good moisturizer because my skin is dry and I like to be comfortable....and it does sort of retard the aging of the skin when the skin is kept moist and comfortable. I also wear foundation which also contains moisturizer and sunscreen - again sort of an antiaging thing. I don't wear blush though, and I don't wear eye shadow any more, just some lipstick (moisturizing) and mascara which I will not do without.

I don't buy things I don't like to eat. I buy my cats and dog their food at Costco as it is reasonably priced, and they love it. Kirkland brand of course.

I don't buy expensive miniature furniture either.....I either make it or have trades or am gifted with it.

I haven't bought any new clothes since I retired. I am using up my "casual" work pieces around the house and to go out in I used to have a passion for pretty nightwear and lingerie, and I've tempered myself over the last 10 or 15 years and now just buy what I like to "hang out" in. Jeans, flannel shirts, t-shirts and shorts have taken the place of my business suits and other work clothing. I'm a happier person now too since I cropped off my long hair. Now it's above my shoulders and I'm so very comfortable with my appearance now. Used to not leave the house unless every hair was in place and every part of me was "Mary Kay" perfect. I'm much more approachable now too! LOL

I refuse to purchase Margarine! It melts to water when you cook with it, and the taste is terrible. It has bad things in it too. Butter is far better for you than margarine. More healthy, if you use it in moderation. And you can cook with it. I fry most of my chicken in butter, and I always add butter to things like spaghetti sauce to take some of the acid away (it works) and I add it to baked beans to give them a nicer flavor. I use it in almost everything you can cook. Margarine just doesn't cut it. Blech!

I don't buy any luxuries unless I have a coupon or it's at least 50% off. By luxury I mean clothing, food and household items....

But I think the ONE thing I would NEVER buy is new technology. I hear about lines to get the new iPhone and it makes me cringe. I have YET to buy a cellphone... I always get whatever free one comes with the basic plan. I've received most of my electronics turning in points I saved on my Sony credit card reward program or hand-me-downs from friends when they upgrade to plasma, etc.

I also don't buy makeup or designer anything... Jeans and t-shirts here. And I get my hair cut twice a year.

My downfall is eating at restaurants because I HATE to cook...

Well, now, that should be the NEXT question: What won't we do without? Wolfie needs her butter (I do, too. Don't use it in some of the things she talked about...but can't do without it when I bake cookies, for example). You like to eat out...so do I. I said I don't buy brand names...but I do buy brands for a couple of items...can't wash dishes in anything but Dawn (true! many of the other brands make me sneeze, hard!!) And while I can and do drink generic sodas from time to time..usually no more than one a day or so ... if I had to choose, I'd only drink "classic Coke".

This is a hard one. Being single with two jobs.... If I want something, I generally get it.

But, I would have to do a Wolfie, I don't smoke or drink, it's not much fun going out alone, so I don't do movies (unless DVD) or eating out. Now that I'm into minis, I spend a LOT less on books! I guess I do have some things I do without! Dang, who would have known! lol

One thing? Only ONE thing?

I won't buy face cream, I've used hand and body lotion on my face too as long as I can remember. I won't buy those 4 packs of regular roll toilet paper either.

Actually there's a whole lotta things I won't buy. DH dragged me to Sam's Club one day and I recall myself saying, no we don't need that over and over.

Hmmm....I'm a borderline spend thrift, so there isn't a whole lot that I won't spend money on. I admit that shopping and impulse buying is my vice. If I see something and I want it or if it will make my life easier, I'll buy it.

That being said, I will not spend money on ridiculously high-priced clothing. I like designer brands, but I'll definitely set a limit on how much I'll pay for them. I'm amazed at how much people will pay for a pair of jeans or shoes. The absolute most I'd pay for a pair of jeans is $80 and even at that they better fit me well and hug me in all the right places. The most I'd pay for a pair of shoes/boots is $160-$170 and they had better be one HOT pair of shoes/boots for me to pay that.

But you'll never catch me in a $300 pair of jeans or a $900 pair of shoes unless they've been given to me by someone.

 Me too. Ray and I have always both had very good paying jobs and money has never been an issue for us. I'm not one for checking price tags. If I want something, I buy it. I don't smoke though, so I guess that's something I don't spend money on.

In answer to the one thing I can't live without. Well I have to buy Sunlight for my dishes, everything else I break out in a rash. And I have to have my Heinz ketchup. I am a ketchup fanatic and use it on almost everything, so does my son so we go through it a lot but it has to be Heinz.

The one thing I will not spend money is on anything that is just too good to be true. I figured out that sometimes its better to spend a little more at the outset and not have to worry about the thing falling apart a week after I buy it. Oh and used movies the screw up my dvd player and computer.

There are two things that I won't spend a large amount of money on, no matter how good the cash flow is at the time. One is vacuum cleaners and the other is clothes. If I absolutely *have* to have either one, I'll always look for a sale first. Vacuum cleaners are just a neccessary evil. As for clothes, I keep a few classic, quality items in the closet for those occasions when I have to dress up, but otherwise, the sale rack at walmart is good enough for every day.
