One Thing You Won't Spend Your Money on. 7/9/08

Recommended Posts

Hmmm...good question!! Never seeming to have money for anything - it seems I have a very difficult time spending money on ME. Yep, I find ways for mini's, but all in all, I hate to spend money on me - clothes, etc...Never do the beauty stuff (buy make-up very seldom, etc.) and clothes , DH has to nearly "beg" me to buy them - I could make do with a pair of shoes for years! :) It just always feels better and seems right when I spend for something for someone else, not me - guess that probably explains my "hobo look" most times :):)

Unfortunately I will not allow myself to buy new books,,, I love books,,, but will get them from the library or friends and family. I get frustrated with the price of books when you can buy a DVD for very little.

I refuse to buy any food item that is instant. Like mashed potatoes in a tub, or brownies you add water too and zap in the microwave or mac and cheese that can be zapped also.

Why spend the money on that when you can take a little time and do it yourself?

There are a lot of things I won't spend money on. For me, the number one thing that comes to mind is high-end designer clothing, handbags and shoes - unless it's an absolute necessity or a "must have" for functionality.

After my knee replacements I actually went out and spent a huge amount on a pair of sneakers. The physical therapist told me that I would walk better, and its true. I always used to buy all my shoes from Payless. The new ones came from Lady Foot Locker and cost $65.00!!!!

Then its not so much what I wont buy or can't do without, but I refuse to throw away food. I raised two kids alone with little money and it just goes against the grain to not use food up.

This is a good question that merits some thought. Some things that aren't of interest to me anyway don't need mentioning like smoking, alcohol, gambling/casinos etc. Other people's lists were very interesting too. If I want a book badly enough, I find the money or an affordable copy. I have trouble spending over $100 for a dollhouse, (so far). When I look at miniature pieces, I do a lot of comparing on ebay and online shops, then look for a bargain. Expensive restaurants are a waste of money for me because I have a small appetite. :)

Hmmm. Me, I won't buy alcohol for me anymore. Don't like how it makes me feel and being bi-polar means I'm not supposed to touch it anyway. I haven't bought any makeup in at least 5 years. And I don't want to spend money on clothes for me, since I don't like the size I am and I don't want to have to look at how big clothes are that fit me. Shirts don't bother me since I like them big anyway, but pants...forget it. I just had to buy some capris for working at Wal-Mart, just started working there about 6 weeks ago, and was completely disgusted with what size I had to buy.

Minis are a different story. When I can spend money, which I can't right now, I'll spend how I want. I will go overboard on something I really want, if that's what it takes to get it. That's how I got my Willowcrest and Brimble's. And that's one reason I went to work on the weekends. So eventually I can have money to spend on minis.

Holly wins the prize for the best answer!

I refuse to buy dryer sheets...unfortunately Fred buys them out of his pocket. But I found out something about them. If you carry a couple dryer sheets in your pockets when you go out at dusk..it repels mosquitoes. I should give that idea a try.

I won't buy really pricey minis (like chandeliers that cost more than a real life one)

I won't buy designer anything. A friend was saying how her 17 year old will only wear $120 nikes. I said mine would go barefoot first. $90 for jeans? Not on my butt. $300 for a purse? Crazy. My SIL used to feed her kids cheap hot dogs, dry cereal, and mac and cheese made with water so the kids could have name brand clothes. Ridiculous.

I make my own mini pictures also - using pictures I have hanging around my house/various family photos. I have even copied pics from various websites, like Kohls. I use skinny sticks for frames. I have not really found a mini picture that struck my fancy. I can't remember the last time I clothes shoped for me. My work clothes are scrubs that are supplied to me, so that is simple. It kills me to spend more than $20 for a pair of shoes. I have small feet (size 5) so it is a pain to shoe shop. My daughters clothes are hand me downs from various people and even her brothers. Thank goodness she loves to wear her brothers old sweatshirts! I go to resale shops or even goodwill. For my boys clothes I shop Old Navy online, or resale/goodwill. My husband was sick a few years ago and we were lucky to be able to keep our house. I had a truck that the payment was higher than my house payment. Even now when we are doing a bit better, I will never buy brand name food.

Audra, we're twins!! I LIVE at thrift stores and love handme downs.

You know you've become a bargain shopper when you go into Target or some other dept store, and get a case of sticker shock

That is funny!! I drive my husband crazy! I will take my 80 year old aunts t-shirts from her. Now don't get me wrong, I don't want to look like crap, but i would rather spend my money on mini's!! Extra $$ today - my DH took me to Lansing (1/2 away) to Hobby Lobby. I got the components to get my electrical started in my DC Madison. Plus he bought my daughter a bedroom set (dollhouse size of course) and some misc. things. THAT is what I spend my money on!!

See, we just have our priorities straight as to where the $ really "ought" to be spent! LOL!

Holly, my hubby does that too. Its hilarious if we go to Target and split up, bc I always know I'll find him quicker if I cruise the outside aisle of the store with the clearance endcaps.

Wow, there are SO many things I won't spend money on! I guess you could say about the only things I WILL spend money on is miniatures and my pets! I do have one "won't spend biggie" though: I won't spend money to buy a pedigreed pet - while each and every animal (certainly including the pedigreed ones) deserves a safe and loving home, there are literally thousands of darling animals being put to death . . . not due to infirmary or violence, but due to lack of sufficient homes. If I feel I can afford to give a home to another animal, I will go save one from certain death. All 5 of my furbabies are "rescue babies" and frankly, I wish I could save more than them. Mine give me unconditional love, zillions of laughs, and lots of comfort during dark times. I just can't give them back enough for all they do for me. I have been miserably unhappy during three abusive marriages, and I have officially thrown men out the door for good and been much happier for it. I have received more love, friendship, and comfort from my cats than I ever did from those 3 bums all rolled up in one! I just wish that there could be loving homes for each animal and that NONE ever had to be put to death for no good reason. I think this topic is one of the things that hurts me most.
