One Thing You Won't Spend Your Money on. 7/9/08

Recommended Posts

OK things I won't spend money on:

* I won't buy clothing in the triple digits....I may buy a doll or a dollhouse for 500+ but I refuse to spend a fortune on rack clothing. (made for and fitted on me is another story...but if I want it bad enough I can make it myself for a fraction of the cost.

* I won't buy Bratz dolls or products for my children....I think its disgusting...

* I won't eat at Friendly's....I'm not a vegetarian but I abhor the fact that they have nothing for Vegetarians on their menu.

* I will not spend over $50 on quality shoes....I utilize sales to keep me in what I need. (I only buy 1 pair every two years)

There is so much, I don't know where to begin:

Around the house stuff; No pricey cleaning products. Generic works just as well, sometimes even better than the more expensive brands. Brand name sandwich bags. Don't see the point, they just get thrown away in the end anyhow. Brand name paper towels. Brand name Cat litter, if you clean your litter box regularly it really doesn't matter what they poop in. Expensive, cushy, fragrance over-loaded toilet paper....talk about flushing your money down the toilet! lol

Crafty Stuff; No high-end yarn. (Although I've been tempted). I hate buying expensive items at craft stores, always hit the bargain bins and clearance aisles first. I'll try to make something before buying a pre-made one. I'm always trying to re-purpose things, making things out of materials I already have lying around the house. I won't buy baby blankets for my grand kids, would rather make them. Can make them bigger than I can buy them and in colors that I want, not that I have to settle for.

No expensive clothes. I'm a jeans and t-shirts kind of gal. I've had the same pair of hiking boots, (that I wear every day), for the past two years and they still have a good year left in them! I'll buy T-shirts off the clearance rack and usually only spend a dollar or two for them. With all the crafts I do I tend to ruin a lot of T-shirts with glue, stain, paint etc.

No pre-packaged foods of any kind. With six kids I just couldn't afford it when they all lived at home and the routine just stuck after they moved out. I would still rather spend an extra few minutes and make it from scratch. Buy a lot of generic brands, but there are a few things that I will buy name brand...Ketchup, Mayo, Soda Pop and Laundrey detergant to name a few.

Sounds like I'm just as frugal as everyone else; and my kids thought I was just being a cheapskate all those years! Ha!

I don't smoke or go to casinos, although I do buy the occasional lottery ticket just to dream for a few days (only $2). I take too much medication, so I don't buy alcohol. I almost never eat dessert at a restaurant because I would be too full afterwards. I never buy brand-new technology - prefer it to be around for a while so that all the bugs are worked out before I buy something. I HATE buying clothes or shoes or boots for myself, so it is something that I seldom do, and I do not go for the fancy stuff. Also, don't buy make-up for myself. The odd time I actually wear some, I use what I have to buy my daughter for her dance recitals.

But, yes, there are some name brand products that I will probably always buy like laundry detergent, ketchup, mustard, toilet paper, etc.

Wow! Just read through all the entries up to this point! - :D - so nice to see I'm in such good company!

Because I'm still in the work force, in the public eye, I do have to put out money for shoes and clothes and I like the BEST! -- but never pay full price! My joy is in finding a very expensive item for a fraction of its original price. Must be my Scottish ancestry.

What I would never spend money on, though, is a sauna. I just can't understanding paying out hard-earned money (which could be put to good mini-use) for the privilege of sweating in a box! Just move to Florida! I work in a lot of Trade Shows and see these very EXPENSIVE little units for your home, slightly bigger than a coffin on end, where you can sit down on a hard bench, set the timer and the thermostat -- and sweat miserably. And people pay for that experience!

No thank you!

I won't spend money on bottled water. I have my own bottle that can be washed and reused. Just don't see the point. I don't really like to spend money period. I buy generics when I can, haven't bought clothing for myself in a long time, have considered the thrift stores and yard sales for that. Used to do that all the time and got some great bargains! I do spend money on my pets, and my hobbies, which for now are miniatures, quilting, and reading, but always hit the clearance aisles first. I buy my books at used book sales that are held here by the library. Spend .50 - $1 apiece.

I won't spend money on bottled water or expensive or trendy cloths. Can't find anything decent even if I did serious shopping! I am not a teeny bopper or a prostitue, thank you! Still have more then enough from my working days. Haunt the clearance racks and sales when I need stuff. Not interested in alcohol although I do enjoy a glass of wine with good food. Don't smoke or gamble although will buy a lottery ticket once in a while. As for electronics, married to a geek engineer who buys what ever he wants so I tend to inherit what he passes on. We have the average of 2 1/2 computers per person in the family. Do have a basic cell phone passed on from my daughter that I only carried in the car for emergencies until I got involved with dog rescue so now carry it all the time. All of our dogs (with the exception of the golden) have been rescues for the past twenty years. Will spend money for decent minis though!!!!

I won't buy expensive or designer clothes, shoes or bags, bottled water, a mobile phone, pirate DVDs, expensive household products. I have no problem buying second hand stuff where I can, as I like to make the most of things. I don't bother with lottery tickets. I would also really have to love a pair of shoes to bother getting them repaired as often that costs more than the shoes!!

I won't buy extended warranties on equipment or electrical items.

My pet thing that I hate to spend money on is taxis - they are very expensive in the UK and if there is any alternative at all I definitely won't use them.

Well a couple years ago I would have said "pre-made trim" but then I broke down and got some at Hobby Lobby's 50%-off sale and found out how nice it is to use...!

No expensive clothes or shoes here-- a pair of well-made boots every few years is as expensive as I get in the apparel category, and the rest is usually JC Penney's or thrift store stock... I like to spend my money on gifts for family/friends, and dollhouses! (Which end up being gifts for family/friends, but anyway...) I have developed some brand-name habits for specific items over the years though, like mac and cheese, coffee, creamer, frozen vegetables, and a few other things...

Clothing.

I haven't bought any new clothing for myself for 2 years now... not since I worked in corporate and had felt pressured to buy new outfits and corporatey clothes to look all professional and stuff. Now that I work for myself, I'm in jeans and T-shirts all day. I wouldn't buy clothing if I don't have to.

With everything else.. technology, video games, movies, miniatures, art, food, fine wine... I am all for it (and am sometimes an impulse buyer in that case). :buddies:

It's almost easier to say what I do spend money on-grandkids, kids, minis, and pets!

Household: One kind of cleaner will do just about everything in the house, and vinegar/water is the best thing for alot of it. Generic groceries except for meat...I'm picky about where I buy meat! Commercial grade toilet paper by the case, rarely use paper towels when a good cotton towel (homemade) can be washed and used again. No paper plates, napkins, cups-that's extremely wasteful and not environmentally conscious.

We do have an expensive vacuum, but the cheapies don't last anytime or pick up anything. Good appliances will still last a long, long time. The same with upholstered furniture...it's worth recovering and I do that myself. A classic sofa will last forever. But all our case pieces are vintage, mostly family pieces or estate sale finds. You can find quality antiques for much less than a cheap repro if you watch estate sales and thrift stores.

Clothing: I buy slacks that fit and are comfortable once a year in black, navy, khaki, blue, gray, and dark brown. I wear them until the hems wear out and wear sweaters with them in the winter, lightweight shirts in the summer. My play clothes are pants the hems wore out of, cut down to shorts, and hand me down t-shirts from all the organizations that either we volunteer at, the boys passed on to us, or some salesman gave us! I just don't care that much about clothes, hate to try them on, and sure hate the prices on them! Just keep a few decent things to wear to church.

Never had a mani or pedi, cut my hair short so I can put off a haircut for about 2 months and then get it at pro-cuts. I wear foundation and mascara to work and church, and buy it at Walmart or Avon on their yearly sales.

I will say that we have bought pedigreed dogs a few times. i will also say that the shih-tsu we bought from the rescue society cost us as much as the one we bought from a breeder, with papers. Of course he'd had shots and was fixed! Abby came from the humane society and we paid for her about what the neutering and shots she'd had would have run. Money well spent on both of them!

We do eat out quite a bit, but with just two of us, it's not much more than cooking and eating at home. and when I have 3 hours before bedtime, I'd rather spend it on minis and stuff, than standing over a stove cooking!

I don't think there are specific items that I won't buy, but there are prices I won't pay. We are a very thrifty family. I love sales, yard sales, thrift stores, consignment shops.... OH! Specific item: brand new shoes for my kids. Eee-gats those things are pricey! And I can get last years version at the consignment shop for less than $5 instead of over $50. I'd rather spend that other $45 doing something with them than have them tear it up in the mud. :buddies:

And that goes for EVERYTHING in our house. The only full price things (asssuming that is) were gifts from the family.

I won't spend money on Cable or sattelite TV. I have had no TV since November 2009. I have Netflix and a wireless Roku box. I haven't seen a commercial except at the doctor's office waiting room in all this time and it's absolutely wonderful. $90 a month for 18 to 20 minues of commercial interruptions per hour. Never again.

Wal Mart - Unless I absolutely have to... The place is always packed and the parking lot is a night mare!

Celery - I know it is part of the trinity and all... But I usually replace it with leeks. Don't tell anyone!!

Shoes - I wear the same pair of crocs all the time... Everyone yells at me to get some decent shoes, but when I do, I just get more crocs!

High end clothing shops - 100 dollars for a t-shirt?! Foggetabowdit!

Makeup - Used to cake it on as a kid... Now I don't touch it.

Things I spend too much money on:

Books, Antiques, Good Food, and hoodies!

There is a lot of the latest technology I refuse to spend my money on. I won't pay for cable TV stations other than the ones that already come in my package, which my family purchased only because we would get poor reception without cable. Satellite radio is totally out of the question because it's bad enough we were forced to get cable to watch TV. And I absolutely refuse to get an upgraded cell phone until the one I have breaks - and then I will take whatever my cell phone carrier will give me for free. I am all for technology, but enough is enough, and each person has to decide what he or she can or cannot live without.

Yes, I refuse to buy designer clothes or accessories just because of the designer name. If an item is on sale or ends up in a thrift shop, that's a different story, but I absolutely refuse to pay top dollar to display someone's name.

What One Thing do you think is a total waste to spend money on? I have one friend who refuses to buy pictures for her house. She takes pictures and have them blown up and framed (Yeap she does that on her own too  ) I have another friend who won't buy make up (She uses samples only, I have NO idea where she get that many samples from). I personally refuse to buy sugar filled cereal. I just don't like it personally and I think it is too much sugar for kids.

What about you. What thing do you refuse to buy? :o

Oh my, you lost me on the sugar-free cereal. For myself, that is the only cereal I will eat. I hate the taste of milk, and I need the sweetener (although I don't use sugar in coffee). Adding sugar to corn flakes is not the same because the sugar sinks to the bottom of the bowl, and it doesn't stay on the flakes like it does on pre-coated Sugar Frosted Flakes. And from what I see, non-sugar coated cereal is just as expensive as the sugary stuff. - But it definitely isn't good as far as nutrition is concerned. I was at a ski lodge once where they featured a random trivia game. The commentator asked what was the number one junk food sold in America. People said, potato chips, pretzels, and every other likely item. But the answer, which no one got, was breakfast cereal. I don't remember if he specified sugar coated cereal or all cereals in general, but I was assuming it was the sugar that put cereal in the the junk food category.

Just found this thread. I refuse to shop in Walmart as well; every time I have gone in there I have seen something horrific, plus all of ours are filthy. I also refuse to go to a pricey eyeglass store. With 3 out of 4 in my family wearing glasses, they are just too much. I've been getting our glasses at Costco for 7 or eight years. The most I've ever paid is $200 for my son's no-line bifocals with transitions(lenses that go dark automatically), anti-glare coating, anti-scratch and the frames are guaranteed for 3 years. On the same note, I refuse to pay grocery-store prices for just about everything. Costco and BJ's have about everything I need at half the price! I have lots of creative ways to store things :giggle:

Pens - every pen in my house has some company logo on it. They are free everywhere, so next time your at the bank....take a pen. My wife in not real big on the one's I got from the Cremation Society though.

Also I refuse to spend money on anti-virus software. Good free software is out there.

As I look back at my list of two (!) things, I feel weird now.
