Your Most Memorable 1st Day 8/27/08

Recommended Posts

Oh, Lord, my dear, you want me to go back over 60 years ago! Probably when I went to Kindergarten, it scared me to death to be in this huge old brick building with more big kids than I'd ever seen in my LIFE! I remember it because we started out in a huge room I guess was the gymnasium, and then marched in a line to our classroom where we spent the rest of the day drawing pictures and letters and all the kinds of things I'd been doing at home, so it wasn't so bad.

The second-most memorable first day of school was my senior year of highschool, I got my schedule in homeroom and NONE of my classes were right, and I spent most of the AM in the guidance office getting it straightened out.

My first day of school - kindergarten: the teacher the teacher "My name is Mis Whoiewhatsit. It is not Hey Teacher. Ten minutes later, like any child with no attention span, I have forgotten her name. I raised my hand to ask her name again "Hey Teacher ..." I started. "Hey you!" she shot back. I never said another word. We monved two weeks later.

My first day 1st grade after moving from a small town to the city. The fire alarm kept going off! After a while I realized that they were using our old firebell as their regular bell. We kept jumping for days!

I do very well remember walking to school the first day of kindergarten with my big brother in tow to show me the ropes - I felt like a queen, he showed me where things were, escorted me to my classroom - and after that, he pretended not to know me the rest of our school years!! :D:)

I have two "most memorable" first school days - both equally memorable!

The first was in fifth grade - we moved to a new city - much larger than the little city I had grown up & gone to school in. We moved near the end of the school year so my first day of school in the new school was very intimidating. I was a very shy child & very nervous to be walking into this huge classroom with far more kids than my old classroom had.

On my first day in that school (shortly after my introduction to everyone) the class was doing a science project that involved dissecting frogs. The kids were paired up and worked in teams of two - with supposedly one child doing the dissecting and the other reading the instructions on what to do. In my team I was the one who was supposed to do the reading. With my already being nervous, this project was more than I could take and before my partner could even get started I puked all over the table, my partner, and several other kids :) The science project was cancelled for that day and I don't think I was in attendance if/when they ever got around to doing it because I don't remember it happening. I actually don't really recall anything else about my few short weeks in that school - but I would imagine I was not very popular! :D

My other memorable "first" was my first day of college. I was a single mom, dirt poor and I hadn't been a student in more than a decade. I wanted a better life for my kids & I and I knew I needed more education to make it happen so I applied for grants and I registered for college. But on my first day, walking across the campus to my first class, I got really nervous - I thought I'd be the oldest person in all my classes & that it had been so long since I had done anything academically that I would fail and spend life being "stupid". Yeah - horrid self-esteem back then. By the time I made it to the door of my first class I had to force myself to walk through the door - and the only thing stopping me from turning around & running was the belief that I could create a better life for us if I just went through the door - that it would be the first step. It's been almost 20 years since then and even still I am thankful every day that I took that leap of faith & went through the door. It changed my life and gave me the confidence I had never had.

I would rather forget the school daze! But I do remember the first grade first day. My new teacher was Mrs. Lincoln. She was like your mother........and made me feel comfortable.

I remember my first days ..Kindergarten, junior high, and high school..but nothing memorable.

Chelsea`s first day of kindergarten..now that was memorable. She was in the very first class that was full day kindergarten.

All the kids are standing outside of the school waiting to be lined up with their teachers. I am standing next to her and she was READY to go...to class. LOL

Then it happened..a meltdown. This little girl freaked out. Screaming, grabbing her Mom`s legs, basically had to be dragged into the school. Chelsea still remembers that incident. I felt bad for the girl but she was scary to the other kids in line. It could have been handled better.

I was worried about Chelsea because she did not go to daycare, nursery school, or Pre-K. I did however get into a Mom`s group that met a couple times a week so that Chels could get socialized. Later on her K teacher was shocked to learn that she had no former schooling before she entered her class. I guess I did something right.

Well, I hesitated posting this because it was a terrible day and year. But here goes:

My most memorable 1st day at school was in 1st grade. Back then I was extremely shy and insecure.

We had a girl in our class that had been held back for 2 years. Her name was Ella Mae. This was her 3rd year with the same teacher. Ella Mae was much taller than the rest of us, and was "different."

When the teacher would tell us to write something or to answer something, Ella Mae never responded. The teacher would grab her and paddle her right outside of the classroom door. The door stayed opened, and we all could hear it, and I've never forgotten that.

Everyday Ella Mae would be paddled, only Ella Mae never cried. I would cry because it was so traumatic to see and hear that. I felt so sorry for Ella Mae, and I couldn't understand why she never did any work.

Then years later I realized that Ella Mae was mentally challenged. She was eventually just passed on until we graduated from high school.

It literally made me sick watching and hearing Ella Mae be punished. How awful for her. I hope she has a dollhouse.

That is so horrible. It's scary to think the way mentally handicapped people were treated in years gone by. At least now (in western countries) they get the help and support they deserve. Poor thing.

Hmmmm, since I haven't really "left" school as I am a teacher I find most "firsts" really memorable... But as a student I think it was starting up in a new school after moving to a new "town" (really small) where we allready knew a couple of fmailies thanks to the remote controlled cars my older brother was involved in, and I was placed in the same class as one of the guys that also competed with these cars, he actually came over on that morning asking if I wanted company on the way to school (apprx 7 minutes walk LOL) which I really appreciated! It made it less tough so to speak...

My first days were always very typical, I loved school. But I do remember the first day of First Grade:

This one boy, Doug, just cried and cried, and cried some more -- he was a real baby! And this last about a week.

I was very amused to find out (many) years later that he became the Mayor! I got a real kick out of that.

On my first day of Kindergarten I remember a young man throwing a temper tantrum when his mother tried to leave him.

I remember in First grade how old Mrs. Burbridge was - around 50. Not to long ago I ran into her. She still looked the same and looked great. She must have been fresh out of school when I had her, as she now looks around 40.

FYI- new crayons do not taste as good as they smell! :)

Does anyone know if the school paste that came in the little white jar still tastes the same? The clear yellow glop with the rubber applicator smelled too bad to taste, but was wonderful for letting dry & peeling off your fingers to make fingerprints.

My most memorable first day of school was when my parents put me in Catholic school in grade six. It was an all boys school in Watsonville, California called St. Francis. It was right across the street from a huge graveyard. I remember that for sure. There were only three classrooms and they always smelled like lemon oil and warm wood. This was in the country right outside of town and sat on the edge of Kelly lake which actually had an 'island' with a CASTLE on it. It is almost surreal to think back on. I was nervous but knew a bunch of the kids from my neighborhood so I wasn't a total stranger. I remember Father Felix always leading the morning prayers in the school courtyard. Good memories. The school was demolished in 1989 due to collapse from the "Big San Francisco quake". Very sad. The gym was left standing and is now like a youth club or something. You hear alot of people tell horror stories about Catholic school but those were my favorite school days of all.

I think this kind of, sort of goes with the topic! HA!

In first grade I met "Jimmy." He was very quiet and nice, and he was a son of a pastor. Well, Jimmy grew up to be a pastor also, and was a pastor for at least 20 years. When I saw him at our last high school reunion, "Jimmy" had stopped being a pastor, and was sniper for the FBI. (He really was!) Anyway, Jimmy was a pastor turned sniper! Go figure!

I remember my first day in grade 10. I had switched from a mixed public school to an all-girls catholic school. Over the summer, I had to have an interview with the principal, Sister Corrigan. That was totally scary because I felt that she held my life in her decision of whether I could go to that school or not!

On the first day, I was quite shy and nervous to be there, but happy at the same time, hoping that I would fit in. (When my father died over the summer between grade 6 and 7, and I got glasses and braces at the end of the same summer, people treated me differently, but I guess that I was very different too, but just really noticed their reactions.) Turns out that I never really did fit in, but that's another story. However, overall my years there are fondly remembered. I loved having to wear a uniform (kilt, white blouse, maroon socks and knitted vest). And I adored several of the teachers there - named my first son Nicholas in part because of my geography teacher Mr Nicholas.
