butlerestates
So this is what I heard about on local news today. And when I went to buy groceries my daughter wanted bananas. I have to admit I was a little bit afraid to grab them! This is a copy from the news story: World's deadliest spider found in produce at Tulsa store Experts say the Brazilian Wandering Spider one of the world's fastest spiders with a talent for hiding in the smallest places. An employee found it in a stack of bananas a the Whole Foods store in Tulsa. It's new temporary home is with the animal care division at the University of Tulsa. "It's in the Guinness book of records as of 2007 as being the world's most dangerous spider. It kills five people a year," says animal expert Terry Childs. With one bite experts say the spider can kill a person in about 25 minutes. Spiders often are found in imported produce, and a manager at Whole Foods says the store regularly checks its goods and that's how the spider was found. Wolfie
Every time I'm at my computer I get bombarded with the little black and little brown devils. I get as many as I can with my trusty fly swatter. I hates them! I'm at war with them. All winter we have them, nary a one in the summer when they all go on vacation or something, but come late winter we got em. Must be the babies........ It gives me great pleasure to flatten em....... Get yourselves a few fly swatters and have fun! One night I got three at once!
heidiiiii
Ewww! There was a story here a few years back that a woman got bitten by a black widow spider that was hiding in a bunch of grapes she bought at the market. She got cured from the venom so that was a blessing. We do not get black widows in the North East...and if we do..I do NOT want to know about it..LOL I STILL to this day look over the bunches of grapes with a fine tooth comb before I buy..Now I am going to be watching the bananas. I wonder if the employee did the

I have one in every room of the house. And use em! That was Josephine Baker. She was *modestly* dressed in that video. She used to dress in JUST a skirt of bananas in Paris. chesterfieldzoo
She was a popular dancer. I have heard stories of spiders in fruit for years. At home depot they comment about lizards in the houseplants all the time.

Intrinsicat
I think the worst spider around this area is the brown recluse, but in general I like spiders. I carry them out of the house... Maybe it was the Nat Geo book of spiders I had as a kid, but I find them fascinating. It's probably a good thing too... one dropped down right in front of my face while driving my truck one night. I simply grabbed the thread he dangled from and set him down by the parking brake until I could pull over - apparently he was letting me know it was his stop. butlerestates
We are not supposed to have these spiders here either! They say it came from Honduros (SP?) So becareful those black widows could hitch a ride in with something
havanaholly
Ah, well, we were hiking at O'Leno State Park two years ago and I walked slap into the web of one of these; her body was the size of my thumb, and as she dropped down from my hat brim to my shoulder you could have heard my surprise clear to High Springs, FL! as DH gently whisked her off my shoulder to the ground. The golden orb web spider's bite might not kill you, but it can hurt!

I am so easily startled when it comes to animals with more than four legs are involved... I can truly understand your audible surprise reaction Holly, I think I would have been able to give people constant ringing ears after such an experience... Hugs
christinee
Ahhh spiders, it's that time of the year when our local spiders are going to be coming out. The lovely Cane spider, aka "Clock" spider. I"m sure you all seen the picture of the HUGE spider behind the wall clock? Yep! They live in my yard and LOVE my work shed. They come from the sugar cane fields and flee when the cane is harvested. They're agressive little buggers that run like crazy and jump. They're not afraid to attack you either. Oh, they LOVE spider spray too. I think they get high off of it. The only thing that works to kill them is a huge stomp from my shoe. If you really don't know what they look like, here's the Google link http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc...p;q=cane+spider If you want to see another cool spider we have down here, check out this pic. They're called "crab spiders". They're really cool looking and the spots form a skull on their shell. They're harmless, the spikes are said to deter birds. It sure worked on me! http://oldcooperriverbridge.org/small/jan_..._crab_close.jpg This link has a picture of a cane spider (aka Huntsman Spider or Wolf Spider) and the red spikey spider (as I call it) http://www.shadygrovetrainingcenter.com/Wi...ife_Insects.htm That's the spider lesson for today! heidiiiii
Christine, if you do a search on here with the words clock spider, you will see a whole thing about it. I think there are pictures too. I SWORE I felt a spider crawl up my arm last night when I was in bed..yuck!
havanaholly
I remember them when we lived in Kailua on Oahu. They really did a number on the roaches, and I let them alone, or gently escorted them outside. What we called "Wolf" spiders in Jacksonville were little brown furry jumping spiders, and they were more voracious little bug-eaters. I have occasionally seen the little "Death's Head" spiders. I wouldn't have reacted nearly so badly to Ms Golden Orb had I read the description, but I was expecting one toxic bite, and without Benadryl I wasn't too happy with our meeting. Basically I enjoy spiders, and for a few years we had a family of argiopes living on the sliding doors to the front deck; these are the "writing" spiders who weave really pretty webs and will & do eat anything that gets caught in them. I wish they'd move back, they caught the anole lizards before they could get into the house to die of dehydration. Actually I enjoy an awful lot of critters, in their proper places... justmesue
DH won't let me buy bananas since a black widow was found in bananas here, (Ontario) a good while back. It's a fobia thing. What are the odds it could happen repeatedly?
rodentraiser
It's amazing what you can get used to if you grow up with it. We had Black Widows all the time in the stable where I used to work and they never bothered me. The brown recluses bother me. We had rattlesnakes all over the place too and I couldn't care less about them either, then I heard a story about copperheads climbing trees. Now you'd have to sedate me for a week if I saw that. butlerestates
Now a expert at the Tulsa Zoo is saying that the spider in the Bananas was miss identified and he showed another spider on the local news that looks close to the Banana spider but it is not poison so who knows! As far as im concerned a spider is a spider and whether its 1cm or 12in I DONT like it! Our area is known for having Brown Recluse or Fiddleback's which are poison and there bite eats away at your skin. To children and any one with a immune disorder they can be especially dangerous. YUCK!!!! anything with more or less legs than I have and it freaks me out!
doogster
A lovely bunch of ripe bananas! Highly deadly black tarantula! O, where is Harry Belafonte? Only problem, tarantula's aren't deadly.
doogster
Guess the bottom line is you gonna import stuff from other places you eventually gonna come up with some of their less friendly residents. The Wandering Spider is a bad character. I love Recluses, they get their name for a reason. I had one live with me (behind the TV) for 2 years when I wuz in Houston. I didn't have cats back then. I left it alone, it ate the fire ants. Why do cats matter? You can't tell the little guys to leave the spider alone.
Hallowell
A few years ago a spider was found in some produce up here in Maine. I think it was a black widow spider.
bookmarm
we had a black widow in our library bookdrop last year. The Orkin man is directed out there FIRST each time he comes to spray! I don't hate spiders like I do snakes! Spiders make good art subjects
