Liza, did you ask your doctor about the iron infusion? It might help combat your fatigue, too.

I have only been getting exercise doing errands, and going up and down all the stairs in the house performing various chores. Not nearly enough, but I do believe I've lost a few pounds!

Alreay called the dr about the infusions, just waiting for the hospital to call me back with the date of the first one. I can hardly wait!

I spent the night at my Mum's place - took her to the specialist today, and got another chest x-ray done. She still has some pneumonia in her lungs, but she is feeling a lot better. She was so ill before, I was really worried.

My brother took time off work to help her settle more bank business this afternoon, while I did her grocery shopping.

We stood and watched our town's Canada Day parade yesterday - my joints protested greatly. Today just finished me off.

It may not be "exercise" - but it's all I could manage! :groucho:

Liza, got any room in that pool for me?

I'd wait a bit until it warms up again - the temperature has fallen to just below 80oF with the rain and the cooler days. Other than that, come on in! :groucho:

Me too, Liza. :happydance: Some days are harder than others - but if we pick ourselves up and try again - and we don't give up - then we can't ask for more! I feel that this thread is here to give us a little more "oomph". I think it's doing a great job ... everyone here shares their ups and downs, and we don't feel alone in the "battle". I know I haven't done a great job this summer, but I haven't thrown in the towel, either. I love to read everybody's posts, and that reminds me of my own goal. Hang in there!

Rosalind,

Just thought that I would pass on some more information on restless legs that I discovered yesterday. It seems that our bodies want to be slightly alkaline. So, when we drink something that is an acid, like pop or citrus juice, our body uses up its calcium stores to neutralize the acid. Restless legs due to lack of calcium can sometimes be a pre-cursor to bone loss through osteoporosis according to an article I read. The doctor said it takes the equivalent of 4 tums to neutralize the acid in one can of pop so that it can be filtered by the kidneys without doing any harm.

This all makes sense to me as my legs were bothering me a lot around the same time that I started drinking a can of Coke ever day. I think that I got addicted to the stuff. Now I remind myself to only have some on occasion and my legs are slowly doing better.

That's interesting - I hardly ever drink pop, but I do like citrus juice. Our bodies are miracles of Nature, but my goodness, looking after them is hard work! :p

I wish I could take the cats for a walk - if it was a daily requirement for their health, you can bet I'd be doing it!!

She must have been excited to have so much to show you! :)

I've been walking more lately - did a lot of standing and waiting tonight - my son broke his collarbone ... again! He broke it four years ago, and it didn't mend very well. (It was broken in two places then, and healed with a weird part sticking out.)

Well, I haven't given up on the Wii jogging. I continue to try and get in 30 to 40 minutes 3 or 4 x a week. I should try to do it more often. :p

In the past 3 months I guess I've lost between 3 and 7 pounds. I can't tell by the scale. It goes up, it goes down. My 15 year old son found out that he lost 10 pounds working with his dad on the deck during the past 2 days. isn't that sickening? :welcome:

I've been sticking to a moderate diet. I suppose I could cut out my evening snack, but it helps we wind down and relax so I can fall asleep.

A funny thing.....if I don't run for 4-5 days, my legs start to ache. It really hurts when I have to get down or up from the floor for anything. When I do run, the pain in my legs goes away and stays away.

There's some incentive to keep running! We all know that the ten pound loss your son has enjoyed is mostly water ... but I won't tell if you won't! :welcome:

We'll be going to a friend's cottage for a few days - I hope to use muscles that haven't had a workout lately. I'll be sore, but it will be fun. (Hiking, swimming, etc.) I'll "crash" when we get home, but if I can keep the energy surging while we're away, it'll be worth it!

I'm new to this forum but sadly not new to attempted weight loss and increased fitness. Did lose 80 pounds some years ago then stayed even for quite a while, lost another 25 two years ago, then put that back on the first winter I spent here in Roslyn, WA - snow up to my shoulders and WAAAY too much to eat. Lost that 26 again over the last few moths, and am making myself take the long route when I walk to the post office. Which means walking the two blocks to the PO straight down the street, then up two blocks and over the other two blocks back home. Ah, did I say that my town is so small that we don't have home mail delivery, so going to the post office is pretty basic LOL.

Also have been walking "laps" in the hall of my building, ten laps is about half a mile. I've been trying to do ten laps every other day....

At any rate, since I don't have scales, the best way I can judge what's going on with my bod is how do my clothes fit and how fit do I feel? I can wear clothes now that I couldn't wear last summer, and don't feel that fit, at least not yet. Also have a Pilates mat work DVD that I have at least taken the shrink wrap off of but haven't yet played :(

Little steps can add up to a lot...says here!

The loosening of the clothing and maintained or improved energy levels is a far better indicator of weight loss than obsessive attention to the scales. Also, over all permanent diet improvements (gradually eliminating extra salt, fats, etc from your diet, increasing water consumption) is more effective than "trying" different fad diets. Also finding physical activity you enjoy and can do daily for at least a half hour is also far more effective than ritual exercise. If your town is small, how about a bicycle?

This week we hiked Sunday and Tuesday we tromped all over the Mall for the day. Wednesday

DS#2 took us on a tour of the whole Pentagon and then we went to Arlington National Cemetery to visit the Iwo Jima Memorial (two Marines in our family) and hunt for DH's uncle's grave. Yesterday we toured Mt Vernon. I have really had to use my cane this week, my right hip wants to crap out! I'll take it and put it on my kayak when we go paddling this AM.

Wow, Holly, sounds like you had a really great week, both for your body and for your mind! Isn't summer great, when you can get out and DO all these things?

The very first thing that occurred to me when I moved to this tiny town was "I want a bicycle!" Actually, what I want is one of those adult-sized TRI-cycles with a carry basket, then I could bike to the grocery story three miles away and bring my groceries back, too. Wouldn't be any good during the winter, but grand during the summer!

You're right about obsessing on pounds lost/gained not being a good thing. Much more important is how you feel, whether you're eating healthily, and are those clothes getting much looser? I am feeling much more fit than last summer (I really did spend the winter sitting on my backside LOL), and people keep telling me I LOOK like I'm thinning down. 'Bout time!

I started out with a three-speed delta-trike (one wheel in front, two in back) because I have balance issues and the only way I can stay vertical on a two-wheeler is to ride stoker on a tandem:

We're retired (I'm 67+) and live in the FL Panhandle, so we get out and DO all these things year 'round; and if the weather's too lousy where we are we hitch up the travel trailer & go where we can!

Wow, Holly, you're a PRO biker! I also have balance issues and never could ride a two-wheeler even when I was a kid. last time I tried, about 20 years ago, I ended up upside down with a seat-shaped black bruise on the inside of my thigh LOL. Walked away on my own, though, which was something. :) A nice sedate trike is more my speed - gonna try to get one in time for next summer. AND not put on the hibernation fat this winter!

I was at our friends' cottage from Friday to yesterday. They have two Labradors, and we got in a LOT of exercise! I managed to keep up relatively well, but I noticed my shoes, and then my sandals, felt tight all day yesterday. It wasn't until we were home and unpacking that I realised my feet and ankles were very swollen - especially the ankles. They had gone down a bit by this morning, but are puffing up again today. Not sure what I did to cause this - except for the walking up hill and down. I was hoping to keep up the walking when I got home ... but I think I need put that idea on hold.
