Greenleaf's Seventh Annual Spring Fling Contest

Recommended Posts

It is a challenge, mostly, I guess because it's relatively recent, and I haven't had all that much time to get used to it. I normally am quite active and, like most folk who want instant gratification, have a "let's get it done" attitude and, if it means doing it ourselves, that's just fine -- even better, and faster too!!! Not any more.

We just have to remember that we all have our limitations, some more than others, and try to get on with it. As you say, we are lucky to have something to keep us engrossed. I know that I have tunnel vision when I get started! I remember, oh, so many years ago, sitting in the casinos, where there are no clocks, for 10-12 hours at a time (if I was lucky, and winning!), and loving it. This is the same idea (probably costs almost as much), and we can do it!!! This IS my everyday life and, I actually sometimes dream about what I need to do next -- is that the house talking to me? -- so that I can't wait to get up and get at it the next morning! I must say that when I was younger and healthy, I rarely had that much get-up-and-go in the mornings (never was a morning person)! I'm sorry, Morgan, that you have limitations to deal with also, but happy that we share this "escape"!

Okay, today is November 14th. The SF winners are supposed to be announced in the middle of November. Sounds to me like noon tomorrow is exactly the middle of the month! I don't know what I want more -- to know who wins or to see more eye candy! Ah, sure I know -- the eye candy wins, hands down! I can't wait to see how many people outside our forums have entered and, best of all, see their entries!

I can't imagine participating in the Fling and not the forum.

I agree, it wouldn't seem...SportsManMiniShipy< that's a word right? All I can think now is if they are going to give out the little version of the house, I got big plans for that..er.. little thing ;P :please:

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. Last year it took wa--a-a-a-ay longer than predicted to hear and see who won and have the winners gallery up and running. I predict T-day at the earliest !

Sandy...do you remember waiting for the Fling kit to be announced? I hate to say it, but do yourself a favor and relax. Trust me. Stressing out over deadlines around here gets you nowhere. You know how so many of us wish we had some time left after our deadline so we can finish? Well, they take the time and it shows. I PROMISE, it's worth the wait.

Seems to me it always takes longer than expected, but they have an enormous job to do! I know I won't win, so I'm not antsy. Too busy working on new teacup ideas for the big craft show at the end of the month. My new friend with the glass-etching business did me a big favor and drilled holes in the back of 10 of my cups so now I can insert an LED light in some of them :) I bought diamond drill bits for my Dremel, but they didn't fit. So I used DH's regular drill, which they did fit, put the cup in the sink (in case I broke it) and drilled away. Turned off the drill to see the progress - and the cup wasn't even scratched!! My friend has a drill press - now I see why I couldn't do it! Oh well.

Oh, Morgan, aren't you the voice of reason! No, actually, I don't remember waiting for the SF kit to be announced! I wasn't even paying attention. Too busy concentrating on breathing! (I must admit that this SF certainly did take my mind off of that!!!)

This is the first time I've entered this contest! I did buy the kit last year, but didn't have time to even start thinking about it seriously. I just liked the look of it and knew I'd eventually do something with it, plus it was so reasonably priced that I couldn't resist! I was in the process of relocating from FL to TN and traveling back and forth, looking for a house up here -- plus having these pesky health problems didn't help to afford me any additional time. I'm a relative newbie here on the forum(s) in that this SF is only the second thing I've ever built -- the Garfield is almost done, but still sitting shingle-less, waiting for its topping! So... of course I'm impatient! Seeing all the gorgeous work done by our members here in the past couple of years is really what got me started. When I studied the images and saw what was done -- and then, even better, what could be done -- that's when I was hooked! I just love learning new techniques and playing around with these new ideas.

I will behave and sit quietly and wait, BUT as far as I'm concerned, it's already past the middle of November!!! Yo, Dean, did you hear me? Okay, now sshhh.

Sandy,I love your Fling and your enthusiasm is delightful!! I work as a caregiver/companion for a woman who has allowed her COPD to effectively cripple her in just a couple of years time (I've known her for several years). She is in bad health, and I gladly help and respect her,but I truly believe she could've have stayed healthy longer had she done like you and just kept on keeping on,staying excited about something! Instead she is often very negative and acts like an invalid, when she is still capable of doing a lot that she refuses to,and there is so much more of life left to live! I don't know your limitations, but it sounds like it gets pretty hard,so I applaud you for your proactivity!

COPD IS frightening. When we had our respiratory unit in nursing school we had to perform an exercise to understand what COPD feels like to the sufferer, and it takes a lot of courage to live with it. Any hobby or activity that can allow you to relax is good.

I can relate to your struggles Sandy , I too have COPD, if you let it , it can get you down. Of course the congestive heart failure adds to my struggles on a daily basis. But all I can do is deal with it , take my meds and try to keep busy and happy. And I am sure having a lot of fun with this wonderful hobby. :D

Thank you -- all of you -- for your kind wishes. I'm sure you'll all agree that it's very rare that one grows to a certain age without any "side effects"! The only reason that I even mentioned my COPD was to emphasize how important -- and engrossing -- this wonderful hobby is to me. I don't get out as often as I'd like, so when I say that I now have about $100 worth of goodies to return to Hobby Lobby, it's because when I do get there, I buy everything I think I might need and then some! It's easier that way -- having, hopefully, everything within an arm's reach! I know I'm terriby, but it's {secretly} fun watching the salesclerk roll his or her eyes  when they see the bagful of craft bits and pieces and then have to match them up with receipts! And then, if it wasn't for e-bay, Amazon, and all the other wonderful sites that are just chock full of fabulosities (Holly, you opened the door with bashability!) and new ideas, we'd all have that much less fun!

So... yes, I'm impatient, but Morgan, I promise I won't do anything rash! I can't!!! Remember, I have at least 3 more houses to build! Oh, and I keep forgetting about that caretaker's cottage! How could I forget? I've already got a ton of stuff for it from Richard Stacey -- grit and slate and brick dust and more! That's going to be a fun one, too!

Oh Mandy, be careful about you choose to return. If it appealed to you the first time through, it is probably in your mind's eye for another future build. Maybe consider to save yourself a trip and just add to your stash unless you are exchanging it for your new build to save $$'s. Just a thought from a mini hoarder with more stash stuff than the store stocks. :bigwink:

As to COPD, I also have it. I try to be very careful and manage it as well as I can. I never smoked but grew up in a house of heavy smokers and had an extended case of whooping cough (back when folks didn't have shots for it) that nearly did me in as a kid. I'm also out of my maintenance meds now due to a mishap with the MD's office, insurance folks and the RX. For a week and a half I've been living on my quick fix inhalers and they said yesterday that will be another week or more til they figure it out. Gotta love the bureaucratic mess that health care is.

The SF Winners circle and Winners Gallery will be worth the wait. It always is.

Whether it's physical, mental or life challenges, we all have them. I genuinely care about each and every one of you. If you come here and say what is happening in your life that isn't positive, I don't see it as a complaint. I see it as an opportunity to include you in my prayers and be grateful that you have found miniatures and this forum. I have my own challenges so I know that when any of us say 'I am having a bad day' it also means 'I am sooooo happy to be here'. Yes, I know that. Please, I think we all know that. So to talk about what's got you down is to let friends know you need a cyber hug. It's not whining. I know I for one, am grateful to know all of you and include you in my prayers and good wishes.

Selkie, I'm returning woodsies that I bought for $2.99 for 75; just got a box of 1000 from Amazon for $6.00! No contest! Most of what I buy at HL are supplies (consumables, like the woodsies, or paints, etc.), that I use to create -- not usually a finished product. Not to worry.

Those are "rescue" inhalers that are meant to be used in emergency situations only, but I think you know that. I do the same thing at times. Hey, if you can't breathe, literally, cannot breathe, you try anything!

Morgan, I can always use a hug, be it cyber or real! I'm very seldom "down," only if something affects my kids, or if I can't breathe, or I run out of money. Happily, only one of those three is recurrent, and I can always find something to fix it (re-connect the oxygen tank, duh!) and to take my mind off the fact that the end is coming closer (build another dollhouse!!!) I do see talking about the negatives in one's life as complaints! (Unless you're on some shrink's couch, of course.) I know it's really nice to have a shoulder to cry on, be it cyber or otherwise, but big girls don't cry unless something is life threatening -- or, in my case (and, of course, in the case of most mothers), if something were to happen to hurt my kids. Crying for anything less is pointless to my mindset because 99% of the time there's a way to fix or resolve that problem. You'd be surprised at how many fires I put out in the course of a day or week or month, whatever!

All that said, you can a prayer for me anytime at all! I am not a religious person, nor am I a Christian person, but I do believe in covering all my bases -- just in case! And, yes, I am sooooo happy to be here with all of you wonderful, caring people!

No announcement yet then?

Still, last year it was very late in coming so I'll just keep checking in. I love to see the album - a relaxing morning with a cup of coffee - perfect.
