JustCallMeAnna
My other half drove me to the Mart Of Plastic (walmart) all they had was cross stitch packages, not much of a selection either. They had a set of punch needles; not even sure if I should ask what that it! Also saw a pack for bookmarks "flower of the month" in the clearance basket. Reminded of runners, otherwise I wouldn't have touched the flowers! At any rate, will these be okay for teaching myself?
aggiemae
Holly is right about seeing a Dr about your hands. Meanwhile there are hand exercises: http://www.healthline.com/health/osteoarthritis/arthritis-hand-exercises#Overview1 you can do to increase your strength and flexibility. It can't hurt to start doing them now and if your hands improve your Dr will get a head start on your dx and tx.

Selkie
Adding my vote to get thee to the hand specialist MD asap. I have had 5 surgeries thus far on my hands in an effort to save the use of them. It is imperative to get help sooner than later. Surgery isn't the only solution. Exercises and injections are other less invasive treatments used. While you are waiting for an appt. you might try wearing some of the lightweight compression gloves that you can find in the sewing and knitting dept. of craft stores and online. I don't have these exact ones but they are an example of what I'm talking about. Here and Here

blueirishmoon
Yes, these are good for teaching yourself. I buy most of my supplies online, through ebay mostly, as it's cheaper. But I have found supplies at thrift stores in the past, though not recently. Habitat restore sometimes has supplies, and sometimes garage sales have some too. Herrschnerrs and The Stitchery are a little more expensive, but are good needlework shops, and they have catalogs, or used to. If you are interested in mini needlework, there are a two names I can think of for you: Felicity Price, who is retiring soon, still has some stock on her website. She is also running a sale on her remaining stock. (felicityminiatures.co.uk) Janet Granger has lots of variety on her website. (janetgranger.co.uk) And there are some good books on this subject too. havanaholly
I have a piece of linen I found in a thrift store that I have been busily stitching mini rugs on whenever the weather has been too icky to go out to my workshop. I am stitching the aubusson rug from Pamela Warner's Georgian embroidery book: http://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?&id=OIP.M303f2693f38af93f2dac55dd68004cb2o0&w=250&h=188&c=0&pid=1.9&rs=0&p=0, changing the color; I also stitched the Persian rug in the same picture
