I'm New! <(^w^)>

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I'm Jay (20) and I'm new here. :)

I got started on dollhouses because the year before my mother passed, she built me a very cute one that wasn't from a kit and it took her months! I'm working on restoring the one she built as it is 9 years old. I'm also building my first dollhouse, The Orchid. I've built two furniture sets so far, also by Greenleaf.

Hi, Jay, and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry you lost your mother at such a young age, but how nice that you have the dollhouse she built to hold some memories. :)

When you have made five postings, you can open a Gallery to showcase your furniture and the Orchid as you build it. We love eye candy.

Welcome to the little family, and how nice you're getting an early start!  I furnished a Laurel with some of the Corona Concepts furniture kits.  When you open your Orchid build album you might want to do another to showcase the house your mother made for you.  How lovely you have it to give you wonderful memories.

Hello Jay, welcome to club!

Sorry to here about your mom.  I lost my mother at a young age.

But, what a loving tribute for you to choose to restore the gift

your mom made with her own two hands for you.  :cloud9:

Welcome!  I would love to see pictures of the house your Mom built for you!  ... and your restoration!  My mother encouraged me when I was younger to make things for the dollhouses I got for Christmas.  Now that I'm 50 I'm finally listening.

Hi Jay. I'm pretty new also. Everyone here seems nice and helpful. Lots of great tips.

Sorry for your loss. What a  great way to pay tribute.  I started to collect Boyds bears in my mother's honor. Good luck..happy building.

Hi Jay, welcome from me too!

I can't wait to see the house your mother built for you, and your restoration!

I just finished a second Orchid. This one was for my granddaughter. It's such a pretty little house!

I'm stuck on wallpapering right now, as I don'y know the best method for applying it.

The best way is the way that's comfortable for you. Yes glue, regular wallpaper paste, contact cement -- all possibilities. Don't use too much. Keep a damp cloth on hand to wipe away any that oozes out along the edges. A brayer or a soft cloth folded into a pad is good for smoothing out the bubbles. Some folks like to apply the paste/glue to the wall, rather than the paper, as the paper can get saturated and tend to tear with the water-based adhesives.

One thing to keep in mind is the walls should be primed before papering, or the natural chemicals in the wood will leach out and, over time, turn the paper brown. Prime with regular latex interior house paint.

Hint: When butting paper in the back corners, overlap the side wall onto the back wall. If the back wall wraps onto the side wall, the thin white edge of the paper will show.

Aw thanks, as a kid I used to wish that I could shrink down and live in the house! Kathi17 I had to re-do the albums, so I didn't see your comment. :/ What was it?

I like the way you redid the album, so I posted pretty much the same thing as I posted last night:

Off to look at your other albums!

Your mom's house is cute Jay!  All scratch too.

Do you have a theme or any idea where you're going with either of your houses, or are you just winging it?

Is there a particular decor/style that you like?

Will the Orchid be a shop?

 :blahblah1: <== me

Some (most) of the members say the house spoke to them - I haven't heard anything yet...

Oh, do you have the newer instructions for the Orchid?

(pdf) click the Download button when you're on the page: Here

Good luck & have fun!!

Thanks for commenting on my album :)

Yeah it took her months to build.

She made a bunch of furniture for it but I've lost most of it.

I'm not sure of a theme but I was thinking I'd like to try a Gothic theme. I'm -mostly- just winging it though. Houses can speak? I'll listen carefully. ;)

I was thinking it would be a quaint little house rather than a shop.

Thanks for the newer instructions, I didn't have them!

I "knew" the Dura-Craft Cambridge (the second kit I ever built) was a French Colonial house redone in the later 1800s, but it wasn't until the Glencroft building team blog that I realized it was the kit talking to me.  I traded off a Willowcrest kit for the Brimble's I'm building now, because the Willowcrest wouldn't speak to me and the Brimble's wouldn't shut up from when I looked at its picture.

BTW, the Orchid is such a nice little kit, it's happy to become whatever you want it to be.  My first one asked if I could make it a general store, o I did.  The next one wanted to be a Christmas house.  The one I found falling apart in a thrift store wants to be a cottage, so far...

I think my Orchid wants to be a comfy little home. c:

Something I might live in myself.

I can't wait to be an expert at dollhouses. It would be so cool to add lighting.

My mom tried to on the dollhouse she built, but she ran out of time and couldn't do it.

I have an idea for a little TV using an MP4 player.
