Beulah
I see a lot of people use a scroll saw. On Micro Mark they have 2 and are both on sale. Which would be the better of the two. Thanks
1martinimomma
I am too interested. Wandering minds want to know.
havanaholly
Given a choice I would go with the one that takes pinned blades.
Mid-life madness
Check Harbor Freight tools as well to compare prices.
Selkie
I have a Proxxon scroll saw. They make quality products, imo. There is a large learning curve with scrolling. I've not yet mastered the things I had truly hoped to do. I also have a very, very old full size band saw which I frequently use. It doesn't do all the fancier scrolly things, of course, but I love it.
Guest
I agree with Selkie.. Proxxon are good.. but there is a steep learning curve.. fitting blades correctly so they don't vibrate or break is an essential skill. For that reason, the pinned blades that Holly mentions might be the pick.

One of the things that helped me with the scroll saw was many, many years of using a sewing machine, especially keeping body parts out of harm's way!
Beulah
Ok now, ladies what are pinned blades for the scroll saw, I guess they don't all use the same blades now lol
Beulah
Just went to the Proxxon site and found the diff of pins and no pins
havanaholly
Our old scroll saw used unpinned blades, which were VERY difficult to maintain the correct tension to keep them from vibrating & breaking (it was an old scroll saw!). Since I'm now either cutting basswood, which is soft enough to cut with utility knife, or really good plywood hard enough to require the bandsaw, I asked DH not to replace it unless he wanted it (he only uses his table saw & the bandsaw). I may not do really fiddly cuts on the bandsaw, but it did well enough for me to cut the sides of the farmhouse's dining chairs:
Mid-life madness
Being a novice, I prefer my band saw. I haven't really needed to to use the scroll saw much. In case it wasn't mentioned before... the scroll saw is used more if you want to cut out a window or a circle in the middle of a piece wood. You can un-pin the blade, slide it through a pilot hole an cut and then reattach the blade.. The band saw I have can do miter cuts(I haven't used that feature yet) the table tilts.
