Elsbeth
I am building a 1:48 room box. It comes with lovely marble patterned paper flooring. The instructions say "use a high gloss varnish". I am a novice builder/finisher (I usually buy my houses used and pre-finished). So what high gloss varnish will go over paper without harming it? I worry that all the stuff in my local store's home section is for heavy duty wood flooring...not paper. Help please! Liquitex? http://www.dickblick.com/products/liquitex-acrylic-polymer-varnishes/ Yay or nay?
KathieB
Test a corner of the paper flooring with a bit of water to see if the colors run. If not, an acrylic varnish will work well.
Mid-life madness
Maybe high gloss Mod Podge?

When I have used mod podge it seemed to remain a little tacky/rubbery feeling. I maybe used too much? I like it though for giving some little items and furniture some gloss. I want the marble floor to look glossy and have a hard finish. Hmmmm.

I wouldn't use it for the floor.
Mid-life madness
Maybe because it is so dry out here, I haven't had that problem with other projects. I saw your Blick stuff at JoAnn's just now. What do the reviews say about it? Have you tried the Americana varnish? It is soap and water clean up.
Sable
Minwax polyurethane works just fine on paper. If you are worried about colors running use the oil based one.

If I seal the paper just to be sure with an acrylic sealer, would the Minwax be ok? I have seen that at the store, so it would be easy to get. Polyurethane is oil based. Whatever you're thinking of using, do a spot test. Better safe than sorry.

My only problem is...the flooring is pre-cut perfectly for the kit (totally my kind of kit!). So there is no extra! lol! I will spot test anyway. Worst case scenario is that I just buy a different paper somewhere else. Thanks everybody!

A water based polyurethane is available and good for indoors and an oil based is used for exterior wear. http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/varathane/ultimate-polyurethane-water-based

I was under the impression that anything urethane is oil based. I guess if you can find water-based oil paints, why not water based urethane? Science class was a long time ago! Sable
I just look at it this way, if it cleans up with soap and water it's waterbased. If you need mineral spirits or turpentine then its oil based.
My Miniature Madness
I would suggest an spray sealer. I have the Mod Podge gloss one and it stinks to high heaven but never runs things - even right out of my printer and the finish is beautiful. The extra benefit is that you won't have any brush marks. Good luck into the building/crafting foray!
havanaholly
Once the paper is glued down I have used regular clear lacquer on it.
