Shannon suggested texture paste which is something from an art supply store.  I found some on Amazon called White Sand and tried it out on the bathroom walls.  it seems to work pretty well.  Some texture but nothing overwhelming.

This is pretty much what I'm going for.  A little bit of that retro look but modern enough to be practical.
