Hurricane Irma

Stay safe, everyone in a storm or fire zone.  I'm in an stage two evacuation zone myself because of a huge wildfire, the Jolly Mountain fire in Washington state is just down the road from Roslyn, where I live.  Horrid smoke, weird red Sun and moon (when visible at all), firefighters camping in town, and the town itself a ghost town.

As to how folks like me, who are carless, in a wheelchair, and with tiny financial resources, get out, well, I have friends who will take me, and my cat, with them if we get a mandatory evacuation order.  Without them, well, as far as I can tell, the town has NO plan for us folks who live in my building, which is a subsidized building for low income seniors and disabled folks.  No one even told us when we went to a stage two evacuation level last Friday, until two days later when our local sheriff and some firefights went door to door throughout the entire town (pop. +/- 800).  I think there may well be some slight dissatisfaction expressed about how all this has been handled at our next town council meeting, hmmm?

Please, everyone out there, take care and be safe!

Everyone stay safe.. Sable, I hope you didn't go to that hotel in Fort Myers... Holly, it might be time for you to hook up that camper. To all of you in the danger zone.. look after yourselves and don't come out until it's well and truly gone!

Holly, I think you should leave. If this thing goes up the west coast of Florida and you're as close to the Florida border as you say, it will be right on top of you.

We are over 200 miles from Tallahassee, we will get bodacious rain & strong winds some time tomorrow.

We will be on the western side of the storm and nearly 200 miles from the eye; our meteorologists are not recommending evacuation for our area, and we are more or less glued to Intellicast.

Hurricane anatomy is interesting. I am way way inland and way way North... But we are on the east side of where the storm will go, and we are under tropical storm warnings, and Holly, who seems closer, is not, not even a watch, the last time I checked. It's more about location and placement than distance in this case.

Update: power out, strong winds for the next 8 or so hours. Medium size branches down but no uprooted trees. We can barely hear it inside since the house is so solid but if you go outside behind the protected house, it is quite noisy.  My neighbor lost the top cap to his tiki hut. I will retrieve it from my rear yard when things die down.  It's amazing how well the Seminoles build those tiki huts. The fronds are so tight that they are barely blowing. They are the only structure allowed without a building permit, as long as a Seminole builds it.

Got home around10:30 last night....its been cloudy all day... A Few showers....but it's coming! Still don't know what cat it's going to be....1 or 2. Been spending the day getting things  ready... They cancelled school for the week here already.

In Tallahassee there's a lot of canopy roads  (for someone who doesn't know what that is)..........its roads were the live oak trees grow....they don't cut them, they might trim them some ,not much thou so when there's a storm they take the wires and the poles down...... They are beautiful but I would rather have my electricity.....

Short update from Mississippi - no changes in weather - the cold front over the gulf keeps it east of us- which sadly makes that the Western Shore of Florida. Stay safe my friends!

Irma is down to a category 3 right now - but the amount of water she is pushing ahead of her and what she will bring with her on the east is devastating.

Our power company in Gulfport has already dispatched Linemen, search and rescue and other specialists - but no one can tell when they can actually start. Currently they are all held in staging areas together with the teams from other states.

Wish I had better news.

My heart is with you, I am glued to the TV  watching it's  progress, right now they are showing folks in the calm eye, a man walking his dog even, now I can understand why Sable was going to move her cars, really clever actually. Boy have I had en education this week. Sable I don't feel so ignorant about hurricanes now. The last newsman says it is losing it's force that is the best news I have had. But there is still lots more so again stay safe..

Everyone kept borrowing my flashlight so I made a new one. Went into my electrical stash and found LED lights. I placed them in an empty water bottle and taped the battery pack to the bottom. Lights up an entire table.

Clever you!

Wondering how Jeremy and the family are doing?

My son and DIL in Orlando are good.  She is working at the hospital, which is at double capacity due to taking on patients from evacuated areas...but she is at least safe there.  Son and the kitties are at home with no power, but safe.  The live oak tree "lost a lot of weight" as my son put it, but "none of it came inside. Which is a win."    They were still getting rain and wind as of this morning, but not sure how long that was expected to last.

Hoping to hear from our other mini friends in Florida to make sure they are all safe!

All safe and sound here except for the typical inconveniences, no power since yesterday morning. My favorite tree is now wood chipper food. Spent most of the day cleaning up the yard and stacking limbs and branches along the easement. The city will have all that picked up within a few days. The hot water heater had just enough warm water in it to do a very quick shower. I'm going to have to deal with sorting the refrigerator out soon into different coolers.

Glad we didn't evacuate. It didn't hit us as bad as Wilma did but it sure had a long duration; blustery winds for 8 hours was enough. At times it sounded like a jet engine was taking off over our heads.

I want to thank all of you for your concern and prayers over the past few days. You are all so dear to me. Big THANK YOU!

Sable that is wonderful news I am so happy to hear that this morning, now Jackie is OK,, what about Holly and Sparkly . Jeremy and Samanthas family.

I guess now the big clean up starts in your area, I have been involved in clean up after a 3 foot high flood that stayed around for a few days..not nice, took a year to get the area u and running but I think your companies are  better prepared than the Uk ones when it flooded.

Good Luck to all your tidying

Sable, so sorry about your tree. :( I can understand the sadness. Hope your power is back on soon.

We are good here. Thanks for the concern Jeannine! We are actually still "in it" right now. It's very much weakened, so its just a bad windy rainstorm right now. Our peak windy time is supposed to be about 7-8 pm, so we have a bit longer, but I think we'll be okay. We have an empty creek bed (probably just a drainage ditch) behind our house that usually fills up pretty quickly, and it still has about another foot before it is full. We have a new back neighbor that has been keeping that cleaned out, bless his heart, so it isn't clogging like usual. A couple times we've had it over flow and come into the yard.

My daughter is in very south Ga, right at the Fl line. They lost power for a few hours, but luckily while they were sleeping. She said they have a big mess, but thankfully all her trees stayed put. The house across the street wasn't so lucky though. :( There is a giant hole in the roof, and she said she saw them pack up and leave.

Sam, how is your family?

Other than overcast and a few sprinkles off & on as bands passed overhead, nothing spectacular.  I toted the garbage can into our woods and left it with a lovely golden silk orb weaver spider to watch over:  https://www.insectidentification.org/pictureviewer/insect-pic-detail.asp?identification=Golden-Silk-Orbweaver&sCurrentPic=pic1
