Sable
Because of Irma, I was forced to clean up my interior and garage work areas. Today I must have realized that my interior work area was too clean and organized so it was time to mess it up again. Our club is making suitcases to display at our annual show in March so I figured I'd get a start on that. I went to Michaels to pick up findings for embellishments and wheels. I made a box frame out of basswood with a Tyvek hinge. Now I'm digging through my fabric stash trying to figure out how to design it. I might have to make a few of them because I have so many different design ideas.

havanaholly
Are you doing luggage sets? Those can be so nifty!
Mid-life madness
Kris Compas did faux leather for an ottoman by painting silk. I've always wanted a red leather suitcase. Can't wait to see your pictures.

That was my original intent but I'm running out of leather with all of my screw ups (ok...learning experiences).
Thimble Hall
Curious here, I have a huge box of leather scraps, I used to use them for doll shoes and teddy bear feet and I bought it buy the pound. My first thought is that some of it is very thick, do you use a special type of leather or thin it by scraping the underside ?? This is something else that was destined for the thrift store till Holly told me not to throw anything out .
havanaholly
It's OK to recycle, Jeannine, if you KNOW you'll never use it. It has been my experience that the item I tossed or took to the thrift store last week would have been perfect for _____.
Thimble Hall
Yep you were right on the card making stuff even my cake decorator tools have come in useful.
Sable
The real leather I've picked up at Miniature shows is very thin. It has suede on the reverse side. Faux leather is too thick for me to work with. It has a thick backing on it which refuses to come off.
Thimble Hall
I don't have any faux leather just all colors and thicknesses of real..For very tiny dolls shoes or teddy feet I used to shave the soft side If you don't mind me copying you I would love to see some pictures of your cases. rbytsdy
Neat! Reminded me of Amber's tutorial-- keep meaning to try a suitcase sometime.
Sable
I'm getting there. Maybe the first one will be finished tonight. The trim leather has a backing on it which I found was too think for the corner decoration. Just before dinner I realized that the backing comes off very easily with good old Xylene. I am the queen of Xylene but I don't recommend that anyone else use it without rubber gloves and good ventilation. So after I redo the corners and create a wheel system, the first suitcase will be revealed. Maybe.
havanaholly
I like snap fasteners for little metal wheels.
Sable
Thanks holly but I found some black beads which I think worked out nicely. Ta Da...don't look too closely the glue bits are only picked up by the camera. The handle moves up and down.

Sable
Thanks Kathie. I'm cured from working with leather. Hopefully fabric will be much easier.

KathieB
The detailing is wonderful. Love that the handle slides, the wheels are perfect, the straps are functional, and the lining is right on target.
havanaholly
It's perfect! How on earth did you "do" the "nails" in the corners? And some of the 1:1 luggage looks to me like the carcases are covered with fabric, and only use leather (or vinyl, probably) for the strapping. Minis On The Edge
Sable!!! What a Brilliant job you did on this! I love the contrasting colors of the straps against to black leather! Those itty bitty nails is a wonderful finishing touch!!
