Luanne
I didn't know what real houses can be from a kit. Did you? Just learned about kit homes from Sears. There are companies that still make them. Lindal Cedar Homes 700 sq - 25000 sq ft, starting at 100k. There are other companies that offer this, too.
SewMini
There are BOATLOADS of Sears catalog homes here in Chicago. They were quite the thing back in the day!
havanaholly
Luanne, we lived in a kit house that was built in 1906-07 when we lived in Coshocton, OH.
shannonc60
A lot of companies here in Australia sell kit homes. They seem to be very popular.

Well this explains why there are so many Sears homes here in Chicago i was desperate to convince DH to buy a fixer upper that looked like No. 8. Sadly we didnt get it BUT the people who did reportedly spent several hundred thousand to restore it. I still wish I could go in it when I pass by. KathieB
I was inside one, once. I don't recall the exterior design, but I do recall thinking it was not a full sized house. It seemed to be built for people a lot smaller than we are today. The stairway to the second floor bedrooms was incredibly narrow. Not quite 1:1 scale. havanaholly
Ours was very much full-size, which we needed with three very active little boys. Montgomery Wards also marketed house kits, as did some other defunct mail-order stores back then.
