third_hand
A word to the wise: Glessner's miniatures are not for the faint of heart. Some depict unexpected deaths and other harrowing subjects, mostly affecting women. However, if you're inclined to have a look anyway, her work is very interesting! Not least of all because she is so socially conscious and thoughtful. I think this is such an interesting use of minis. I'd love to hear what folks think! https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2018/02/05/death-feminism-nutshell/ Edited February 5, 2018 by third_hand
Elsbeth
Yep - I got the book a long time ago and there is even a scene with an infant's death. Not child's play (as mentioned in links below). I like Corinne Botz's photos a lot. We weigh in on this one a lot here - here are some older posts that might be interesting to read about the same topic: http://www.greenleafdollhouses.com/forum/?app=forums&module=forums&controller=topic&id=39415#comment-633955 http://www.greenleafdollhouses.com/forum/?app=forums&module=forums&controller=topic&id=40993#comment-657115 http://www.greenleafdollhouses.com/forum/?app=forums&module=forums&controller=topic&id=9760#comment-175779 http://www.greenleafdollhouses.com/forum/?app=forums&module=forums&controller=topic&id=41124#comment-659586

I can't believe I'm just getting around to hearing about her work. I really appreciate you pointing me to all the posts. I'll have to do a bit of reading and see what folks have been talking about
havanaholly
We have also hit on the use of dollhouses and miniatures in movies & TV shows (I still dig out the CSI dvds to rewatch the miniature murders).
wormwoodz
Very interesting work... perhaps because of the use of dolls I find these scenes really creepy, it's not even uncanny valley territory but perhaps the familiarity of some of those objects (totsie toys and such) and the nature of the scene. The weird combination of something endearing and something disturbing is very unsettling, reminds me of that dollhouse song from Melanie Martinez.
Shy Spirit
I liked that dollhouse song, Ashley. Thanks for the link. :) I also have the book, and I agree that the scenes are impeccably created. The detail in all of the "victims" is so well done, it's downright scary. I actually had to put the book down the first time I tried looking at the details - I was a little queasy! Holly, I didn't know CSI was such a miniatures hotspot! I always joke to my fellow amateur sci-fi enthusiasts that I'm only interested in Star Wars and the like because of the miniatures work! They aren't convinced ;) In a totally different genre, I recently re-watched Citizen Kane (I'm far more of a Golden-Age-Of-Hollywood and Hays-Code-Era/Noir gal really) to examine some of the miniature set design. It's incredible what set designers and special effects folks can achieve with such tiny things! I'm glad to hear it gets discussed here on the forum. In addition to murderer who made roomboxes of their murders and sent them to CSI in advance there was the episode with the werewolf brother & sister and the girl's dollhouse. There was a dollhouse featured in "Friends" and the toyshop scene in the first "Santa Clause" movie featured a whole assembly line of Greenleaf dollhouses under construction.
blueirishmoon
And if anyone's seen "The Greatest Showman" which was quite good, there's a quick scene where when he's first made it big, one of his daughters gets a dollhouse.
