Hello Everyone! My first house!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

My name is Rachel, and I am 35 years old and live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I got my very first dollhouse kit as a gift about 7+ years ago...and I'm finally getting around to giving it a shot! hahaha. I've always been fascinated by miniatures, so I thought building a dollhouse would be a great hobby to take up, but turns out that at the time it was gifted to me, I had neither the space nor the money to actually construct it. Anyways, I got re-inspired this month while putting up my Halloween decorations, and remembered my dusty old Greenleaf kit sitting in storage, and thought that it would be cool to make a little haunted/creepy house instead of a normal one! (I'm obsessed with Halloween and all things haunted, spooky, creepy) So, I figured I'd better actually start this time before the motivation left me again. LOL

Anyways, I am currently about to start on the Fairfield, and would appreciate any tips! I've tried searching the term "Fairfield" on here multiple times, and can't get any results to show up. There have to be some posts about it? Perhaps I'm using the site wrong...AHH

Nice to meet you all! So excited to be here! :)

Welcome! That's weird, searching for "fairfield" is returning an error message but other searches work okay. Sorry about that, the forum software hasn't been updated in some time and it can be finicky!

You can also search the forum with Google. Go to Google and enter this in the search bar: site:http://www.greenleafdollhouses.com/forum/ fairfield

[That tells it to search for the word "fairfield" on this site.]

I built a Fairfield many years ago, and posted about it on my blog: http://www.emilymorganti.com/blog/?tag=greenleaf-fairfield

The posts are in reverse chronological order, so go to the second page and scroll down to the bottom if you want to start reading from the beginning.

Welcome to the little family, Rachel.  Somehow or other I wound up at one point with TWO Fairfield kits that wanted to become halves of a Bar Harbor summer "cottage", so I built one of the kits inside out and changed quite a few things on both of them:  http://www.greenleafdollhouses.com/forum/?app=gallery&module=gallery&controller=browse&album=3404  I have lost count of how many times I put them into dry fit as I built them, including taking glued together sections back apart and fitting them again.

Hi Rachel, welcome. I was in Joann’s yesterday and looking at all of the Halloween decor and their cute mini black houses, the Fairfield will be perfect. I did a Halloween house years ago with a house called the Canterbury.  Have fun :)

Welcome to the forum!

One place to look for inspiration, in addition to here, is Google Images. Just type in "Fairfield dollhouse." From there you can click on images that look like real people's projects (not stock images or stores selling it) and click through to the websites of people who have made it. :) I also looked on YouTube when trying to find out more about specific dollhouses.

Be sure to share your progress!

That's funny, I literally just went to JoAnn's website to look at Skinny Sticks for my wood floor, and decided to browse "miniatures" and it turns out they have a ton of super cute spooky Halloween miniatures that I hope might work in this house (if they aren't too big....darn 1:24 scale house! haha)

Thank you so much! And thank you for sharing your images! I love seeing how creative people get with these things, and what different visions they come up with!

I hope you don't mind me asking you questions here...I have SO many hahaha....I notice one of the first things you said you would change in the Fairfield is the staircase and you would replace it with a Houseworks one. How would that work? Do you buy one already assembled that fits in that space? Or do you buy a kit and try to modify it to fit? I do feel like the staircase is lackluster, and feel like if I don't upgrade it, it will make me sad later, but I'm so overwhelmed with just the basics of how to assemble/paint/paper a house that the idea of trying to modify it at all is terrifying.

Houseworks components are mostly already assembled.  For 1:24 the skinny sticks are awfully thick for that scale.  I held my utility knife upside down and scribed "boards" directly into the kit floors using a cork-backed steel ruler.  The other 1:24 house I built was a hacienda and for the wood floor in the bedroom I cut iron-on wood veneer edging into scale sized "boards":  http://www.greenleafdollhouses.com/forum/?app=gallery&module=gallery&controller=browse&album=1766

As for asking questions, one of the purposes of this forum is to share information, and how can we do that if people don't ask?
