1:24 scale furniture

I'm having a hard time finding some good 1:24 scale furniture.  It seems like everything I look at online is either expensive or super-chintzy, cheap looking.

Recommendations for finding decent (price and quality) half scale stuff?

I wound up making all my furniture for the Fairfields and most of the casita.  I found kits for the nursery furniture at Ron's and the bathroom sets hidden under piles of marked-down stuff in a corner at Hobby Lobby, and Dollhouse Miniatures ran a series of 1:24 furniture articles when Warner Group bought them & went bimonthly.  The rest I just took my 1:12 furniture books and graph paper and reduced all the patterns.

Part of the fun (IMO) of half scale is the hunt for just the right pieces. It’s true that there are not as many options for per-made items in halfscale, so I make a lot of mine. There are a lot more sellers of half scale furniture kits than there were five years ago. That makes it easier.

Debora, I had a real fun challenge making that Knowle settee in the Fairfield parlor, because the 1:12 pattern had been reduced some weird % to fit the page in the book, so I had to do arithmetic to first get the actual 1:12 measurements so I could redraft them to 1:24.  But no matter which scale I'm working in, I find that making what I want that fits is more fun than the law allows.

I agree with Debora and Holly--you may need to make your own.  There are a lot of kits out there, which you can customize to your own taste.  SDK, MiniEtchers, Karen Benson, Red Cottage Miniatures, and Melissa's Mini Wereld are some examples.  I also check eBay for their 1:24 artisan offerings on at least a weekly basis.  You can find some interesting pieces that way.  Like Holly, I've most recently begun making my own furniture from scratch and, also like Holly, I've found that scaling down 1" patterns (particularly those from Kris Compass) works just fine.  I use a lot of bass strip wood, which comes in various widths and thicknesses, because that just makes things easier.  It can be fun to find a 1:1 piece of furniture you like and scale it down to half size!

I totally agree with these suggestions. I recently found a fantastic 1:24 furniture kit maker on Etsy as well: https://www.etsy.com/shop/HalfScaleMiniatures?ref=l2-shopheader-name

Shellie with MiniEtchers will even take ideas for furniture and try to make them for you! She's awesome. She custom made me a lovely desk and bookshelf (which I think are now available on her site). Petite Properties are awesome but keep in mind that they use a strong cardstock not wood - hard to wood stain realistically but can take paint.
