I had to use supports to hold the trim in place because the upper floor was warped a little.

By all means!  The piece of wood on the floor is to protect the flooring and to provide extra friction so the support could be really wedged in there.  That way it not only holds the crown but it straightened out the warp in the ceiling (3rd floor).
