I did two dark umber washes over the initial burnt sienna gel medium application, followed by a second application of gel medium to add additional texture, followed by two more burnt umber washes and finally followed by a burnt sienna wash.

Looks amazing.  When you say 'wash' I take it you mean that the paint was considerably watered down and then sort of spread all over? :)

Yes, a wash is an application of diluted ink or, in this case, paint. It creates a transparent layer letting the base grain or color show through.
