I think it depends on the setting. The wood is nicely shabby chic, but I might consider painting the wood or cladding it in a metallic product.

If I went with stone, I think I'd use flat flagstone rather than little round stones (like pebble dash)

I'm not a fan of the box.  Especially if it's for your gorgeous modern build!  I agree with Kathie - go with the stone!  Love the fountain idea - looking forward to seeing how it turns out.  

 

Since I am dealing with lingering shingle pain (since May 9 and this is Jun 7) it is downtime to think and plan.  Thank you so much everyone.

Downtime led me to ...may not do this fountain!  Bought stone but still not into it.
