Crumbling brick chimney

This is the exposed brick chimney and fireplace for the attic room. I had trouble with the egg carton bricks coming loose after they got wet from painting and grouting. I couldn't get all of them to lie back down and finally gave up and just tried to make them look more like loose brick than loose cardboard. Believe me, they don't look any worse than the RL brick in my basement!
