Displaying My Dollhouses
|
|
|
|
Here is a view of my "streets of houses". I was able to fit all of these houses in 1100 square feet of townhouse space so if I can do it, anyone can. I substituted bulky furniture for smaller designs, kept only what was necessary, used two shelf carts to display two houses in the space of one and I use floor lamps anytime I can because that's one less table taking up space. After all, what's the point of a house if not to use it as a dollhouse gallery? :)

I wanted an old fashioned style house so I decided to make this one it. I didn't use any particular era, I just wanted the old fashioned feel.
The kitchen is inspired by my mothers kitchen and the way she would decorate hers when I was a little girl. I remember the bright colors and striped rugs so I incorporated those things into it.

My Beacon Hill

This is my most favorite house of all time. If you only have one dollhouse in your life, this one has to be it. The design and detailing of this house leaves nothing behind.
After my first Willowcrest turned out to be a disaster, I tried my hand at a cabinet grade plywood house. It was much easier to assemble but something was missing. When I looked in a dollhouse catalog and saw this beauty, I knew that this is what was missing in my life. I was hesitant to try a die cut house again but with my husbands encouragement, I did it and I don't regret it at all.
This is my second Beacon Hill and I finally got it right this time around. I love this house. I decorated it with Chrysnbon kits because of their beauty and details.

My Buttercup

This house just screams to be yellow and thats what mines became. Maybe it's because of the name but I think if I had ten Buttercups, each and every one of them would still be yellow.
I had no idea how to decorate the interior at first and then I thought of fall and my favorite fall holiday, Halloween. I decided to use black wire furniture in it and it's just the right size house for it since there isn't much black wire furniture out there.
I wouldn't call this house Halloween themed exactly but you can certainly see it's influence in her.

My husband chose the colors of this house and I wasn't very thrilled with them at first but they have grown on me. I don't have any other purple house and don't plan on one again so I decided I might as well go all out with it on this one.
I made this house into a dollhouse shop called The Little Purple Dollhouse Shoppe. When I have enough space in a future home, I'll put it beside the Storybook Ice Cream shop.
Miniatures and ice cream, what street of shops can be better than that?

My Emerson Row

I have always loved the unique look of this house but unfortunately it was discontinued.
My mini friend Terri came to the rescue when she found a kit on Ebay and gave it to me for Christmas. It was the best gift ever.
Right now it stands empty but I plan on making it my third Victorian home.

This is my most favorite half scale dollhouse of all.
I had been searching for a half scale house to add to my collection when I can across this beauty. I just had to have her.
I think it's the best half scale house out there because of it's realistic lay out and details. Now if they would only make a one inch scale version.....

My Garfield
|

This is truly the king of all dollhouses. "Uhm!" (says the Garfield). I stand corrected, I meant QUEEN. It's hard to imagine it as female with its enormous stance but mines is definetly female and not a dainty, feminine one either. This one stands her ground and demands respect.
I love the Garfield. I think it's the best miniature mansion on the market. The details on it are amazing. Though I was intimidated at first because of it's complexity and size, this house was a big teddy bear to build. Of course she wasn't just going to allow me to build her like any other Garfield. She wanted a bashed tower and so she got her gazebo/balcony tower top.
She's empty now but soon she will be adorned with Reutter Porcelain pieces.

My Garfield's Carriage House

I made this little carriage house from the Annie's Crab Shack kit.
I really love how versatile this kit is. I made the shelving and benches on the interior from some unused furniture pieces left over from the Garfield kit.

My Glencroft
|
|
|
|
I really made a disaster on my first Glencroft. For some reason it was not cooperating with me in any way. This house was my first try at Tudor, which is a style I wasn't really much into at first. Maybe that's why the house was fighting me every step of the way. I wasn't really completely pleased with the end result of that first try.
Now I love Tudor and this second Glencroft was worth the second try at it. I decided to paint the half timber trim this time rather than stain it and I made the thatched roof with Deb's faux fur technique. I also plastered the interior walls rather than hassle with wallpaper again.

I decided to put this house on legs and use a shabby chic decor. It didn't turn out that way though because this house wanted elegance and that's what she got.
The exterior is inspired by Wedgewood jasperware.
I made the chandeliers and powdered wig myself. Furnishing the interior will be slow because finding the right pieces for it is a little difficult.

I like this kit because it can be made into so many different things. You can really try your creative skills with it and that's what I did with mines.
I tried several different techniques inspired by Diana's Canterbury and I really like the way it turned out. It soon told me it wanted a priest to live in it and so a priests home it became.

My Lily

I would always see this house in miniature catalogs and just couldn't make up my mind whether I liked it's design or not. Little by little the house began growing on me and I got myself the kit. Maybe it was because of the mansard roof or the wrap around porch.
This was the hardest house I have ever built but it was well worth it since I think it's one of the most realistic looking miniatures I own. In person, this is quite a house. Pictures certainly don't do it justice.
This house reminds me of the sea side so I gave it a little "by the beach" feel. I used a light and airy decor for it.

I love the look of this little house and I decided to make mines with a Spanish flair. I think the curved front wall gave me that idea. Either way, I think it's such a cute kit.

This house went through several decoration changes before I decided on making it a tea house. It was suppose to be a fairy house at first, but she just wasn't agreeing with that. Then I decided to fill her with Chrysnbon furniture but she didn't want that either.
So she remained empty for a very long time until some forum members suggested for her to be a tea house and she finally agreed. So a tea house she became.

I have great memories of building this house because it was so much fun. I knew that cameos would be the theme the moment I started it. The inspiration for this was the oval decoration in the front entry.
It just so happened that Walmart had perfectly sized cameo buttons for the exterior decor and I found cameo themed wallpaper at the miniature store.
This house is special to me because it was the first house my father saw when he walked in through the door on one of his rare visits and for the first time in my life he acknowledged me and told me it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. He couldn't believe I had built it. He actually looked at my with respect. He stayed for awhile admiring all the houses and from that day our relationship has been different. I will never forget it.

My Primrose

I certainly need to relive my childhood with a Hello Kitty house. I am fanatical about Hello Kitty. I remember when I was a little girl, I would turn every pencil box I ever owned into a Hello Kitty house. I would make the furniture out of paper and put a Hello Kitty pencil eraser to live inside of it. Hello Kitty's room mate was a Garfield pencil eraser. Soon, I got all the other kids making houses out of their pencil boxes too.
Well, now as an adult, I can make a better house for Hello Kitty to live in rather than just a plain old pencil box. Now I just have to find Hello Kitty themed furniture somehow.......

My Storybook Cottage

This little cottage has a story of it's own. I entered a Greenleaf contest to try and win a house that I would then give as a surprise gift to a forum member who had unfortunately lost some of her dollhouse kits.
Well, I did win the house but the forum member was ill and said she would be unable to ever build the house so I ended up building it for myself and turned into an ice cream/candy shop.

Making this little tiny Tudor really improved my skills for tackling a second Glencroft. This is a very charming dollhouse and what it lacks in interior space, it makes up for in pure cuteness. It's actually quite detailed for its size.
I made mines into a rustic medieval cottage. I used most of the furniture kits that came with it for furniture in order to keep the rustic look I wanted for it.

When I saw this house, I fell in love with its elaborate gingerbread and I just had to try my hand at one. I bought the birch wood kit since I figured that it would much easier considering the massive about of trim. Well, it was because the wood was very smooth.
It stands empty for now but I plan on making it some kind of gallery or maybe a book store. This house is clearly telling me it certainly doesn't just want to be someones home.

My Washington

I always wanted a bare wood dollhouse. I just think they look quite beautiful "naked".
I decided to make the Washington this way because its simple design really works as a bare wood house. To give it a little modesty, I stenciled some flowers here and there on it. This house really takes me into the woods.

My Westville

This house was a gift from my mini friend Terri.
My husband saw this house in a catalog and he instantly liked it. This surprised me since he's not into miniatures. The architectural design of this house gives it extreme realism. I fell in love with the staircase closet.
I decided to use an old fashioned country decor in it. I also threw in a little bit of Christmas.

My Willowcrest
|
|
|
|
This was the very first dollhouse I had ever built and actually helped me take the plunge into the world of miniatures. I bought it after my mothers passing and the build helped me cope with some of my grief.
Unfortunately, it never turned out right because of my lack of knowledge so it wasn't long before I got rid of my beloved dollhouse. I was never able to try my hand at it again, since it had been discontinued.
My mini friend Terri made it possible for me to have a second chance in building the house that reminds me so much of my mother. She ordered it for me when she saw a kit on Ebay and this is the result.
