Scale can be one of the trickiest issues for the dollhouse collector. While "1:12" is the standard dollhouse scale, even items labeled "1:12" aren't all necessarily compatible in size and bulk. Here's my full list of how to shop until you drop in all of the major scales used for dollhouses, wargaming figures, model cars and airplanes, and toy trains.

1:4

This scale is defined by 16" fashion dolls such as Gene, though it can stretch down to slender 14" dolls and up to Art Asylum's 18" rock star figures. They all are pretty much limited to sharing Barbie's furniture and whatever accessories they can find. Cost Plus World Market stocks a surprising array of plausible furniture and accessories, apparently by accident.

1:6

"Play scale" is traditionally defined by Barbie, though it's also the scale of GI Joe, larger Sailor Moons, Cy Girls, many Hollywood and rock star figures, Art Asylum's smaller Bruce Lee, Construction Jack's skilled tradesmen, Gearbox military figures, Action Figure Paradise Figures, Soldiers of the World, M&C Power Team figures, and some Ertl hunters. Look for adults in the 11" to 12" range. This is also the scale of 8" child dolls such as Ginny, if used as children, though most are too fat to be compatible with standard 12" adults.

Barbie is the major source of furniture.

Splendid military vehicles are made by New Bright and Army of One. New Ray makes motorcycles. M&C makes fire trucks, etc.

Greenleaf once made a 1:6 kit, the Princess, and matching furniture. You can sometimes find it at dollhouse stores that have been in business a very long time.

1:8

This unusual scale is the land of "Hetty" dolls, though it also fits Vogue Ginnys and 8" Mme. Alexander children, if they're treated as sturdy adults. 1:8 was more common in the 1970s, when it was the approximate scale of Dinah Myte, Steve Scout, the Sunshine Family, and Jody. Adults are 8" to 9" tall.

All of these dolls can ride "live steam" trains. There are patterns for Hetty furniture. Jody and the Sunshine Family had their own furniture and accessories. For Ginny- and Muffy-type dolls, there were many playsets made in the 1950s and 1960s; manufacturers include T. Cohn, Cape Cod Toymakers, Strombecker, Cass Toys, and Watko.

The goodies in Japanese toy-surprise boxes often fall about here in scale, though you can't count on it -- I've gotten furniture and accessories ranging from 1:4 all the way to 1:24.
